Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) Treatment Technique Therapy in the Management of Young...
DysphagiaThe goal of this study is to obtain data that well help inform the feasibility and design of a randomized control trial of the therapeutic Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) technique in improving the swallowing function of young infants presenting with severe dysphagia.
Treatment of Dysphagia by Using a Synchronized Electrical Stimulation Device
Deglutition DisordersThe purpose of this study is to determine the synchronized electrical stimulation device effective in the treatment of dysphagia.
The Role of Therapy for Muscle Tension Dysphagia
Muscle Tension DysphagiaMuscle tension dysphagia is a novel diagnostic taxonomy describing a subset of patient population with reported dysphagia who exhibit normal oropharyngeal and esophageal swallowing function as evidenced by videofluoroscopic swallow study. These patients also demonstrate abnormal supraglottic muscle tension during laryngoscopy as well as signs of laryngeal hypersensitivity and laryngopharyngeal reflux. Treatment of these patients with Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) therapy is a common practice however voice therapy invention targeting the unloading of the supraglottic muscle tension has been shown to be highly effective in symptom resolution per the investigators' clinical experience. The study is designed to answer efficacy of treatment being offered to patients with muscle tension dysphagia.
Screening and Intervention of Postextubation Dysphagia
Oropharyngeal DysphagiaSwallowing Disorder2 moreThis clinical trial aims to test the validity of a two-item swallowing screen and to examine the effects of the Swallowing and Oral-Care (SOC) Program on resumption of oral intake, incidence of penetration and aspiration, and incidence of pneumonia in adult patients who successfully extubated after ≥ 48 hours of endotracheal intubation.
Effect of Oral Menthol on the Swallow Response of Patients With Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Associated...
Deglutition DisordersOropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is the most frequent digestive disorder in older people (>70 years) and has been recently recognized as a geriatric syndrome. The main features of OD are: a high prevalence and severe complications either related with the decreased swallowing efficacy with 45% prevalence of malnutrition or due to decreased swallowing safety with 50% prevalence of aspiration pneumonia that increases hospital stay by 100% and leads to a 50% of mortality rate. However, there is no specific pharmacologic treatment for OD in older patients yet. Treatments are now evolving from compensation to active treatments aiming to restore the swallowing dysfunction and some groups have been looking for new therapeutic strategies. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the effect of administering menthol in bolus on the swallowing response in elderly and neurogenic patients with OD. In addition, this study will also assess the side effects of this pharmacological strategy.
Dysphagia After Different Swallowing Therapies
DysphagiaVideofluoroscopy1 moreDysphagia after stroke is associated to increased pulmonary complications and mortality. The swallowing therapies could decrease the pulmonary complications and improve the quality of life after stroke. The swallowing therapies include dietary modifications, thermal stimulation, compensatory positions, and oropharyngeal muscle stimulation. Most researchers used clinical assessments and videofluoroscopy to evaluate the effect of the swallowing therapies. Some authors performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the brain neuroactivity during swallowing with tasks in normal adults and unilateral hemispheric stroke patients. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of swallowing therapies not only in clinical swallowing function but also brain plasticity of acute stroke patients with dysphagia by videofluoroscopy and fMRI.
Efficacy of the Myofunctional Therapy on Oral Dysphagia
DysphagiaOral Phase1 moreThe aim of the study is to analyze the effects of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) on oral dysphagia (OD) in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
The Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Swallowing Functions in Stroke Patients With...
StrokeSwallowing Disorder4 moreIn our study, our aim is to evaluate the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation added to traditional dysphagia therapy in stroke patients with dysphagia, on functional oral intake status, dysphagia-related symptoms, quality of life, and complications related to dysphagia.
Outpatient Swallowing Therapy for Subjects With Neurological Illness
DysphagiaHealth care staff in the municipalities do not always have the necessary competencies to treat patients with dysphagia. At the present neurorehabilitation hospital dysphagia examinations for outpatients are provided. The objective is to investigate the effect of a specialized outpatient dysphagia unit for subjects with dysphagia following neurological illness. Occupational therapists from the outpatient dysphagia unit will train with subjects for 2-3 weeks, and supervise furter training provided by health care staff in the municipalities.
Kinesiotape and Dysphagia
DysphagiaCerebral PalsyDysphagia is common problem in almost all children with cerebral palsy (CP) and there is no consensus about to dysphagia therapy modalities. We aimed to investigate the short- and long-term effects of kinesio taping (KT) on dysphagia in children with CP.
