Clinical Trial of Levodopa/Carbidopa ( Sinemet) Therapy in Angel Man Syndrome

Angelman Syndrome

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness (how well a drug works) of Carbidopa/levodopa (Sinemet) in individuals with Angelman syndrome. Sinemet is a medication that helps to raise dopamine levels (a chemical that signals nerve cells) in the brain and central nervous system. There is evidence that dopamine concentrations may be abnormal in patients with Angelman syndrome. This study is investigating whether Sinemet helps motor control, intellectual function and the achievement of developmental milestones in people with Angelman syndrome

Women's Lifestyle Balance Study

This pilot study aims to determine whether adding a sleep extension and sleep hygiene intervention to an existing lifestyle improvement program improves its efficacy for weight loss in those at risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Half of the participants will receive the Centers for Disease Control's standard PreventT2 program and half of the participants will receive the same program with an additional sleep intervention.

Flow Augmentation Study in Postthrombotic Patients

Postthrombotic Syndrome

Rationale: Stent therapy has been proven to be an effective form of therapy in the treatment of chronic iliofemoral and iliocaval post-thrombotic obstruction. During the first post-intervention day intermittent pneumatic compression stockings (IPCS) are necessary to augment venous flow. This will inherently prevent early stent occlusion. Our aim is to investigate whether the Geko device is effective as IPCS regarding augmentation of flow in post-thrombotic patients during the first day after stenting. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to identify whether the Geko system is effective in augmenting flow compared to IPCS in post-thrombotic limbs before after stenting. Study design: Interventional pilot study with randomized cross-sectional design. Study population: Patients with a post-thrombotic obstruction undergoing a percutaneous procedure (PTA, stenting). Intervention (if applicable): Treatment with intermittent pneumatic compression stockings (IPCS) and Geko-device. Main study parameters/endpoints: The main endpoint and parameter of this study is time-averaged maximum flow velocity (TAMFV), measured by duplex ultrasonography using its pulse wave Doppler function.

The goal of this clinical research study is to learn about the safety of giving mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to patients who have ARDS. Researchers also want to learn if these cells can help control ARDS when given with drugs that are routinely used to treat ARDS. In this study, participants will receive 1 infusion of MSCs. This is an investigational study. MSC infusions for the treatment of ARDS is investigational. Up to 20 patients will take part in this study. All will be enrolled at MD Anderson.

Activation of Hip Muscles in Runners With Patellofemoral Syndrome

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Introduction: Hip motor control deficit and neuromuscular disorders of the gluteus medius influence the mechanics of patellofemoral joints through increased dynamic knee valgus and can lead to Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS). Mechanoreceptors can be stimulated by an elastic tape, which sends desired tactile cues via afferent improving the functional support of the musculoskeletal system. Objective: To analyze the response to hip stabilizer muscle activation in street runners with PFPS through the application of elastic tape therapy. Methods: The investigators evaluated street runners between the ages of 18 and 45, who run at least 5km/week and had been suffering from pain for at least 3 months. The volunteers had been assessed in relation to their measurements, experience of pain and training routine, their medius muscle (GM) and biceps femoris muscle (BF) had also been tested with surface electromyography through pre-determined performance tests. The participants of both groups wore a bandage for 6 weeks (1 per week). However for the participants of the placebo group the investigators applied a different anatomical path without tension, eliminating all the therapeutic elements. The volunteers were reassessed following the trial. Hypothesis: Expected to observe that elastic tape therapy do result in any improvement in the activation of hip muscles and improvement of pain in street runners with patellofemoral pain syndrome.
