Brief Behavioral Treatment for Sleep Problems in IBS Study

Irritable Bowel SyndromeSleep Disturbance

Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) often report more fatigue and sleep disturbances compared to their healthy counterparts and compared to patients with other GI disorders. This pilot study will evaluate the feasibility of a Brief Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia (BBT-I) in Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 40 participants will be recruited; 20 will receive 4 weeks of BBT and 20 will be assigned to a wait list control group (WLC). The primary aim of the current project is to assess feasibility of administering BBT-I to a sample of patients with IBS. Because behavioral sleep treatment has not yet been studied in IBS or any other GI population, this project will provide information about treatment adherence, recruitment, and effect sizes. Secondary aims include evaluating the impact of BBT-I on sleep quality and IBS symptom severity.

Do Simple Running Technique Changes Reduce Pain and Change Injury Causing Mechanics

Patellofemoral Pain SyndromeMedial Tibial Stress Syndrome2 more

This project aims to investigate whether an increase in step rate can be used to reduce pain and injury causing movement patterns in runners who are currently experiencing achilles tendonopathy, iliotibial band syndrome, patellofemoral pain syndrome and medial tibial stress syndrome. Many injuries have been reported to share similar injury causing movement patterns. For example iliotibial band syndrome and patellofemoral pain syndrome have been reported to be caused by increased side to side drop of the pelvis and inward movement of the hip. Gait retraining is a method of changing the way people run in order to change movement patterns.Increasing step rate may present a gait retraining method that does not pose further injury risks and can be used across multiple different injury populations. Studies have shown increasing step rate can reduce frontal plane movement patterns at the pelvis, hip and foot as well as reducing sagittal plane joint angles such as ankle dorsiflexion. Based on the changes in movement patterns increasing step rate has been recommended as an intervention for the treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome, medial tibial stress syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome and achilles tendonopathy. Therefore this study aims to investigate whether an increase in step rate can reduce pain and change injury causing mechanics in runners currently running with patellofemoral pain syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, medial tibial stress syndrome or achilles tendinopathy. The aim of the project is to use a simple gait intervention, increasing step rate to investigate if this technique change can reduce pain immediately, at short term follow up and long term follow up. The project will also look at whether an increased step rate can be maintained at follow up and whether this changes movement patterns proposed to be the cause of injury. Runners will be recruited from local running clubs and competitions using poster advertisement at running clubs and emailed to running clubs

Treatment With Metformin and Combination of Metformin and Pioglitazone in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome...

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Objective: To investigate the changes in the levels of interleukin-6 and interleukin-8 after 3 months treatment with metformin alone and combination of metformin and pioglitazone in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). To evaluate insulin resistance in all the groups at baseline and after 3 months of treatment. Design: Two-Arm Randomized Clinical trial. Setting: Out-Patient Department (OPD) of Mardan Medical Complex, Khyber Medical University. Patient(s): One hundred and two patients with PCOS. Intervention(s): 51 women will receive metformin according to the body weight with maximum dose of 1000 mg (BD) daily. Remaining 51 will receive metformin and pioglitazone combination according to the body weight with maximum dose of 1000 mg and 30 mg (BD) daily. Main outcomes measure(s): Serum concentrations of fasting blood glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and i-nterleukin-8 (IL-8).

Periodized Aerobic Interval Training in Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic SyndromeMetabolic Syndrome X

Autonomic disfunction present in metabolic syndrome subjects is related by a greater vulnerability of the heart and risk of cardiovascular events. In this context, aerobic interval training has been highlighted by its easy applicability and benefits effects in autonomic modulation in different populations. Therefore the studies that use de aerobic interval training in this different populations didn't realize a periodization of training with preparatory periods with progressive increase of load, specific phases with less duration predominating the intensity and transition periods for recuperation. Additionally, there isn't studies that investigate the effects of aerobic interval training in autonomic modulation of individuals with metabolic syndrome. In this context, periodized aerobic interval training can arise like a new type of treatment that offering security and efficacy in subjects with metabolic syndrome. So, the aim of the study is evaluate the effect of periodized aerobic interval training in cardiac autonomic modulation and cardiovascular and anthropometric parameters of individuals with metabolic syndrome.
