Probiotics as a Prophylaxis to Prevent Clinical Manifestations of Oral Candidosis in Patients With...

Sjogren's Syndrome

Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune chronic disease. It has two forms Primary Sjogren's syndrome charactrized by dry eyes and dry mouth. Secondary Sjogren's syndrome characterized by rheumatoid diseases as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and lupus erythematosus. SS patients are most liable to oral candidiasis , so they need prophylaxis aganist oral candidiasis. Probiotic bacteria are live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer benefits to health.Probiotics are commonly used as a prophylaxis aganist oral candidosis.

Probiotic Supplement and Microbiome, Immune System and Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic SyndromeMicrobiome2 more

This study will define the impact of a probiotic supplement on microbiome, immune system, and metabolic syndrome. This study will determine the degree to which a probiotic supplement can 1) improve metabolic markers and metrics of metabolic syndrome, 2) alter microbiota composition and function, 3) impact microbiota metabolites, short-chain fatty acids-potential normalizers of metabolic and immune dysfunction, and 4) regulate immune status and function including reducing chronic, systemic inflammation as assessed by high dimensional immune profiling.

Heat Therapy and Cardiometabolic Health in Obese Women

ObesityPolycystic Ovary Syndrome4 more

Traditional medical treatments are often based on research done exclusively in males, and recent research efforts in the physiology community have highlighted critical sex differences in disease presentation and progression. For example, the relative risk of fatal heart disease is 50% greater in obese, diabetic women as compared to their male counterparts, and women appear to respond differently to lifestyle interventions such as exercise compared with men. Chronic passive heat exposure (hot tub use) provides alternative or supplemental therapeutic potential for improving cardiovascular and metabolic health in obese women. In addition, passive heat exposure may offer specific cellular protection from stresses like a lack of blood flow (ischemia), which is the primary cause of fatal coronary heart disease. This study is investigating the possible cardiovascular and metabolic health benefits of chronic passive heat exposure, and whether regular hot tub use (3-4 days per week for 8-10 weeks) may reduce obese womens' cardiometabolic risk. The investigators are examining cardiovascular health through blood pressure, blood vessel stiffness, sympathetic ('fight or flight') activity, and responsiveness to stresses like increased or decreased blood flow. The investigators are also examining metabolic health through an oral glucose tolerance test and a subcutaneous fat biopsy. The goal of this research is to develop a therapy targeted toward the specific health needs and complications of obese women, in an effort to improve cardiovascular and metabolic health and provide therapeutic alternatives in this high-risk population.

Evaluation of the Physiodoloris Pain Monitor in Patients With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

A French University team (M. Jeanne, MD, and M. LOGIER, Ph D) have developed a pain assessment tool based on the analysis of the variability heart rate which evaluates the Analgesia Nociception Index (ANI). This index is intended to give a quantification of pain. The aim of the present study is to assess the validity of the ANI parameter in patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome treated with a nerve block (reversible pain).

Prevalence of Acromegaly in a Diagnostic Consultation for Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Prevalence of sleep apnea syndrome in patients with acromegaly is about 70%. It seems that comorbidities of arterial hypertension or type 2 diabetes are more severe in patients with acromegaly and sleep apnea syndrome. Besides sleep apnea syndrome associated to acromegaly gives rise to few symptoms, that explains it is under diagnosed. The mechanisms of the association are based on maxillofacial modifications linked to acromegaly, a thickening of soft tissues with deposits of glyco-aminoglycanes but probably also because of the associated obesity, of the potential existence of a goiter and a muscular dystrophy of the dilatative muscles of the pharynx. At present, no study clearly documented prevalence of acromegaly in a diagnostic consultation for sleep apnea syndrome.

Feasibility of mindBEAGLE in Disorders of Consciousness or Locked-In Syndrome

Consciousness DisordersLocked-In Syndrome

The primary aims of this study are: To determine the feasibility of deploying mindBEAGLE, a portable, bedside EEG-based system, in the Intensive Care Unit in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) or locked-in syndrome (LIS); To determine if mindBEAGLE neurophysiologic markers of cognitive function correlate with bedside behavioral assessments of consciousness; To determine if mindBEAGLE neurophysiologic markers of cognitive function correlate with functional MRI (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) biomarkers of consciousness; To determine if mindBEAGLE can serve as an assistive communication device for people with LIS.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Obese

Gastric BypassBlind Loop Syndrome3 more

The objective of this research is to determine the incidence of microbial overgrowth of the small intestine before and after a gastric bypass. For this purpose, the study is based on the analysis of the expired hydrogen H2 with gas chromatography before surgery and at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months.
