Clinical Efficacy of Roxithromycin in Men With Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome...

Chronic ProstatitisChronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome

Roxithromycin is effective in the treatment of intracellular organisms, including chlamydia and mycoplasma, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects on respiratory diseases. To explore the potential therapeutic benefit of roxithromycin in chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), this study compared the effect of roxithromycin with ciprofloxacin and aceclofenac.

Effect of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome on Insulin Sensitivity and Cardiovascular Risk in PCOS...

Obstructive Sleep Apnea SyndromePolycystic Ovary Syndrome1 more

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common disease caused by hormonal imbalance and is also associated with overweight and obesity. It affects 5-10% of adolescent girls and women capable of having children. Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with missed menstrual periods, hormonal imbalance, being overweight, and with a form of diabetes. Girls with polycystic ovary syndrome may have a breathing problem known as "sleep apnea." Sleep apnea may cause a person to stop breathing for short periods of time while sleeping. People with polycystic ovary syndrome are thirty times more likely to develop sleep apnea than those who do not have PCOS. If sleep apnea is not treated, it may lead to daytime sleepiness, poor school performance, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The purpose of this study is to understand how insulin function is affected in presence of sleep apnea in girls with polycystic ovary syndrome between 13-21 years of age as compared to girls with PCOS without sleep apnea. Insulin is one of the hormones made in your body to convert food into energy. In people with increase weight body cannot use insulin properly. The investigators also want to see if insulin action is also affected by sleep apnea.

Autonomic Function and Cardiovascular Risk in Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome

The purpose of this study is to explore whether patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) differ from healthy subjects in daytime and night time autonomic function and cardiovascular risk markers and whether 4 week treatment with pramipexole affects autonomic function and cardiovascular risk markers in patients with RLS.

Clinical and Biological Markers in Acute Respiratory Failure

Ventilator-Associated PneumoniaAcute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

In a recent experimental study, the investigators showed that the growth factor Activin A is expressed in the lungs of rats with the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) at levels that are comparable with those determined in the bronchoalveolar (BAL) lavage fluid from patients with ARDS. In the same study, the administration of the Activin A inhibitor Folistatin resulted in attenuation of the histological damage of the ARDS-afflicted rat lung. The precise role of Activin A/Folistatin in acute respiratory failure associated with acute lung inflammatory pathology has not been elucidated yet. Therefore, the purpose of the present, observational study is to investigate the role of Activin A/Folistatin in respiratory failure due to ARDS and/or ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), also in relation with other biochemical markers, such as cytokines and surfactant-related proteins.

Identification of Biomarkers for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome

Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) has long-term complications, namely metabolic imbalances (obesity, dislipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Until now, no molecular markers for this physiopathological connection have been identified. This project aims to determine non-invasive biomarkers that may allow better comprehension of the metabolic consequences of OSAS, as well as assess the effect of Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on these metabolic parameters. This project will integrate the clinical, metabolic, genetic/proteomic and biologic systems to further explore the mechanisms behind OSAS, as well as the effect of the treatment with CPAP.

Medical Telephone Triage of Emergency Calls for Thoracic Pain

Acute Coronary Syndrome

Thoracic pain is the main symptom of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), urgent and serious illness. Whereas hospital mortality decreased until reaching 10%, out-of-hospital mortality remains high: half of the deaths occur during the first two hours. The benefit of an early diagnosis of ACS in term of morbidity and mortality is well established. Identification of the coronary origin of a thoracic pain by the telephone triage physician of the pre-hospital emergency service (SAMU) leads to the sending of a physician staffed ambulance (UMH) and is thus a key element of the prognosis. The aim of the study is to build a telephone predictive score of ACS at the triage of calls for non traumatic thoracic pain. The separate analysis of the questionnaires by sex will authorize the validation of a unique score or two distinct scores for men and women.

The Effect of Eyelid Surgery on Dry Eye - a Prospective Study

Dry Eye SyndromePtosis1 more

The investigators aim to assess the effect of blepharoplasty with or without muller muscle resection on the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. this will be an observational study in which patients undergoing the aforementioned surgeries will be followed up and monitored for dry eye symptoms.

Vasoprotective Activities of Low-Fat Milk in Individuals With Metabolic Syndrome

Cardiovascular DiseaseMetabolic Syndrome1 more

The purpose of this study is to define whether the acute consumption of low-fat milk protects against postprandial vascular endothelial dysfunction by reducing oxidative stress responses that limit nitric oxide bioavailability to the vascular endothelium. The investigators hypothesis is that the consumption of low-fat milk will improve postprandial vascular endothelial function in an oxidative stress-dependent manner that allows greater nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. The objectives of this study are to 1) examine improvements in postprandial vascular endothelial function in response to low-fat milk ingestion, 2) define low-fat milk-mediated improvements in circulating biomarkers of redox status, and 3) define the mechanism by which low-fat milk improves NO bioavailability. Collectively, the successful completion of these studies is expected to define NO mediated activities of low-fat milk that protect against vascular endothelial dysfunction in individuals at high risk for developing CVD.

Inofolic NRT and the Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic SyndromePostmenopausal Disorder

A prospective, randomized, controlled, open-label study will be carried out on 80 post-menopausal women affected by the metabolic syndrome (criteria are described in NIH ATP III). After a written informed consent, women will be randomly treated for 6 months with hypocaloric diet (control group) or with diet and a supplementation of myo-inositol 2000 mg plus cocoa polyphenols 30 mg and plus isoflavones 80 mg. will be given randomly Eighty post-menopausal women, affected by metabolic syndrome will be randomized into two groups: 40 treated with myo-inositol 2 g twice per day and forty treated with placebo for six months. The investigators hypothesize that the administration of myo-inositol would improve the insulin-receptor activity in these women, reducing insulin resistance.

ABC Program in Patients With Metabolic Syndrome

Weight Reduction in Patients With Metabolic Syndrome

Aims: We evaluate the efficacy of the "Active Body Control (ABC) Program" for weight reduction in patients with metabolic syndrome. Methods: The ABC program combines telemonitoring of the physical activity with a low-calorie diet also preferring carbohydrates with low glycemic indexes. In this 12-month, randomized, clinical trial 60 patients will be treated according to the ABC program and 60 control patients will receive standard therapy.
