Beta Cell Function in Women With Turner Syndrome

Turner Syndrome

Diabetes is more frequent in women with Turner syndrome. The purpose of this study is to see, in what ways the glucose metabolism is different in this study population. The hypothesis is that women with Turner Syndrome have an impaired insulin production (beta cell function).

Emergency Department MCG for Suspected Acute Coronary Syndrome

Acute Coronary Syndrome

The goal of this study is to assess a new non-invasive computerized, multiphase, resting electrocardiogram analysis device in early identification of patients at risk for acute coronary syndrome. The overall objective is to assess the association between the results from a resting MCG and 30-day cardiovascular outcome in patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected coronary disease.

Sleep Apnea Screening

Sleep Apnea/Hypopnea Syndrome

To assess the incidence of Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS), both obstructive and central, in patients with: 1) pacemaker indication; 2) implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRTD), 3) heart failure and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and 4) heart failure and reduced LVEF.

Effect of Food Consumption on microRNA Related to Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome X

The objective of the Project is to assess the effect of traditional food on the expression of micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA), which regulate genes related to glucose metabolism. It will be a randomized experimental research. The research hypothesis is that consumption of traditional food will resolve biomarkers of glucose-related anomalies. Students of The Academic Division of Health Sciences (DACS for its initials in Spanish) will be invited to participate and they will be divided randomly in two groups. The experimental group will receive daily, five days per week, during three months, a lunch based on traditional Mesoamerican food emphasizing local produce. The experimental group will be provided an equivalent ratio of fast food from the school cafeterias. In both groups, at the start and end of the protocol, values of lipid, glucose, reactive protein C, alanine aminotransferase, and glycosylated hemoglobin profiles will be determined through spectrophotometric methods. The levels of expression of five miARN involved in regulating genes related to glucose metabolism (miR-320, miR-33a/b, miR-145, miR-335, and miR-124a) will be determined also by means of PCR amplification techniques. Statistical analyses will be based on two-way ANOVA, with a Dunnet's test procedure to find significance in measurements; significance will be set at p ≤ 0.05.

Evaluation of a Question Prompt List for Patients With Myelodysplastic Syndromes (QPL-MDS)

Myelodysplastic Syndromes

MDS are a diverse group of hematopoietic malignancies, which mainly occur in patients over 75 years of age. Incidence rate in 2012 in France was more than 6 cases per 100 000 person-years. MDS are characterized by ineffective haematopoiesis causing cytopenia, and by leukemic transformation. The disease is heterogeneous, its pathophysiology complex and clinical evolution variable. The few data available on MDS patients show how difficult it is to understand MDS, its prognosis and the reasons for prescribing or not some treatments. In the context of a highly complex potentially lethal disease such as MDS, it is of utmost importance to optimize the information conveyed to patients. Particularly, 70.5% of MDS patients surveyed in our developmental study would have preferred more information about prognosis at diagnosis disclosure. A simple intervention based on the use of a question prompt list (QPL), would greatly improve the information process by helping patients to express their main concerns at their medical consultations. Cultural differences may exist in the appraisal of QPLs and QPLs have not yet been widely used in France. However, in line with the previous results available in the literature and in a context a priori favourable to the use of such an instrument, the investigators hypothesise that use of a QPL will increase MDS patients' expressions of concerns and questions at their medical consultations. Particularly the investigators assume that the discussion about prognosis will be facilitated, without increasing anxiety because patients remain free to ask or not for such information. The use of QPLs would also be a way to limit social inequalities related to insufficient information and to encourage patient-doctor communication and meeting of patient preferences which could lead to better health outcomes.

Initiation of Non- Invasive Ventilation at Home Versus Hospital Among Patients With Overlap Syndrome...

Overlap Syndrome

The study is based on the assumption that in the Overlap Syndrome, the introduction at home of the NIV is as effective in terms of compliance and clinical and gazometric improvement, and life quality, that setting hospital start up. The investigators will study the initiation of NIV at home versus in hospital in two randomized Overlap Syndrome patient groups. The main objective of the study is to demonstrate the non-inferiority of the initiation of the NIV at home versus hospital in terms of compliance.

The Effects of Nanocurcumin on Serum Oxidative Stress,Inflammation,Adiponectin and NF-kB in Blood...

Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a public health challenge that includes a range of conditions including abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension. The syndrome is associated with an increase in the risk of Cardiovascular disease and death. Curcumin is a very active compound obtained from turmeric root. Curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and is also involved in the regulation of several signaling pathways. Since curcumin powder has low bioavailability, fast metabolism and low absorption, nanomicielle curcumin will be used in this study. Therefore, this study is planned to determine the effects of supplementation of nanomicielle curcumin on oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, adiponectin in serum and NF-kB in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in patients with metabolic syndrome.
