DexmedetOmidine Complement Treats Chronic insOmnia and Improves Circadian Rhythm (DOCTOR)
Chronic InsomniaIt has been reported that dexmedetomidine, alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist, can activate endogenous neural sleep pathways in the central nervous system. This randomised, double-blinded and controlled trial was designed to investigate whether dexmedetomidine can improve/treat chronic insomnia patients. Its effects on sleep quality and improvement, EEG and circadian rhythm, brain connectivity, cognition and biomarker changes are determined.
Better Nights, Better Days for Children With Neurodevelopment Disorders
Nonorganic InsomniaNeurodevelopmental Disorders1 moreMore than 90% of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) experience sleep problems, whereas less than 25% of typically developing children experience sleep problems. Poor sleep can have significant consequences for children's physical and psychosocial health, as well their caregivers' well-being. The impact of sleep problems on daytime functioning is even greater in children with NDD. Although there are a range of factors that may disturb sleep in children with NDD, the most frequent cause of sleep disturbance is behavioural insomnia. There is some evidence that behavioural interventions can be effective in improving sleep in children with NDD. However, this has not been tested through well-designed, large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Moreover, there are a number of significant barriers to access for insomnia treatment for children; most importantly, sleep interventions are often only provided by specialists, limiting access to treatment services. Instead, behavioural insomnia is often treated with advice about sleep hygiene and with the supplement melatonin, which is, at best, a short-term solution. The investigators, an interdisciplinary team of researchers, will develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an online sleep intervention that will be widely accessible and sustainable and will have the potential to dramatically improve the health of children with NDD and their families.

Tai Chi Effects on Chronic Insomnia in Breast Cancer Survivors: Immune Mechanisms

After completion of successful therapy, may behavioral symptoms persist with over 20% of breast cancer survivors reporting chronic insomnia of greater than 6 months duration that fulfils clinical diagnostic criteria with associated functional limitations, decreased quality of life, and possible effects on long-term survival. Behavioral interventions are highly efficacious in the treatment of insomnia and preferred over hypnotic medication when insomnia is chronic. However, insomnia studies conducted in cancer are scarce. The proposed research builds upon program of study that has examined the efficacy of mind-body intervention, Tai Chi Chih (TCC), on health outcomes including sleep impairments. Preliminary studies show that TTC, a slow moving meditation, contributes to improvement in subjective sleep quality, sleep amounts and sleep efficiency. The investigators have further found that sleep, fatigue and proinflammatory cytokine activity are reciprocally related and that TCC decreases the mechanism through TCC carries its effects on sleep outcomes.

Insomnia DisorderBased on real world and focusing on patients with chronic sleep disorders, this study conducts a data-driven subtyping research on the clinical symptoms, polysomnography, near-infrared scanning, molecular genetics, and other characteristics of chronic insomnia disorders. It constructs a multimodal therapeutic outcome prediction model, providing a basis for personalized interventions for chronic insomnia disorder.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi) in Patients With Somatic Disease

Pain, breathing difficulties and other symptoms of disease can worsen sleep problems and cause insomnia. In turn, insomnia may aggravate pain, fatigue and reduce quality of life in patients with somatic disorders. This project aims to evaluate a course offered to patients with insomnia and somatic disease at Diakonhjemmet Hospital. The course is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, a documented treatment for insomnia.
