KIDney Injury in Times of COVID-19 (KIDCOV)

SARS-CoV InfectionCovid193 more

There is an unmet need to evaluate the impact of sub-clinical/mild COVID19 disease in the outpatient setting on prevalent and incident renal injury, as this data is currently unavailable. To capture the diversity of race/ethnic risk and COVID19 related municipal shelter-in-place guidance, the investigators will enroll COVID19-negative and COVID19-positive samples balanced by race/ethnicity from 3 different states, California, Michigan, and Illinois. Study endpoints will be assayed from urine samples mailed to the study team at 2, 6, and 12 months after their date of PCR test, with no requirement for these individuals to leave their homes to participate.

Medicolegal Aspects of Head Trauma

Head Trauma

Trauma is a critical global health problem. It represents the fifth leading cause of significant disability and is one of the most common causes of mortality in youth and adulthood, as one in 10 deaths worldwide occurred due to trauma. The head is preferred target for criminal acts and is a favorite place for various pathological lesions .Traumatic head injury (THI)is one of the prevalent causes of global death and disability. lately, head injury (HI) cases have increased in both developed and developing nations. Therefore, it is of great value to evaluate the clinical and pathological features of head injury . Every injury that results in harm to the scalp, skull or brain can be sort out as a HI which can be caused by traffic mishap, falls, sports and gunshot wounds. Vehicle accidents are one of the most prevalence causes of THI as they are deemed to be one of the main causes of fatality due to road-traffic accidents (RTA) .Among different type of the RTA, motorcycle accidents holds the number one cause of accident in most of the country . Skull fracture and hemorrhage are common association, which may be present with head trauma and affect the outcome of the case. The skull fractures, especially by blunt force offer varying diagnostic and medico- legal problems to the medical jurists as well as to the clinicians.

Prevalence of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury With a Reducing Episiotomy Rate

Anal Sphincter Injury

Obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASIS) is a serious complication of a vaginal delivery. High proportion of women, 40-59%, suffer from faecal incontinence (FI) after this type of injury.1-3 OASIS and FI have a negative impact on women's quality of life.4 The rate of elective caesarean section at second birth was much higher in women with OASIS at first birth compared with women without the injury (adjusted odds ratio 18.3, 95% CI 16.4-20.4).5 Primiparity has an increased risk of OASIS (odds ratio (OR) 2.39-8.34).6,7 Other factors are macrosomia and instrumental vaginal delivery.6,7 The role of episiotomy on OASIS has also been widely studied but there are controversial results. There were around 500-7000 deliveries at Prince of Wales Hospital annually. Among them, 50-55% was nulliparous women. About 65 -70% of women had normal vaginal delivery and another 5-10% had instrumental delivery. There was a change from 'routine episiotomy' to a more restrictive use of episiotomy in normal vaginal delivery during the last 10 years, with a reduction of rate of episiotomy from 90% to about 50% (from Dept.'s internal audit). The objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of OASIS in the era of a reduction of episiotomy.

Impact of Severe Brain Injury on Neuro-vascular and Endothelial Regulation of Peripheral Microcirculation....

Severe Traumatic Brain InjuryTrauma

Severe brain injury (SBI) is one of the world's leading causes of death and disability in young adults, but its peripheral vascular consequences in humans are poorly understood. This prospective, monocentric, pathophysiological study aims to investigate differences in vasoreactivity in the anterior aspect of the contralateral forearm at the most injured cerebral hemisphere between patients with severe head trauma and patients with severe trauma without associated brain injury matched on sex and age (+/- 5 years).

The Impact of Covid-19 on Patients Waiting for Knee Surgery

OsteoarthritisKnee5 more

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the postponement and cancellation of elective orthopaedic surgeries worldwide. These delays to elective procedures combined with ongoing demand have led to increasingly longer waiting list times. This cross-sectional pilot study aims to investigate the change in patients' perceptions of knee pain and function since being waitlisted for surgery. A bespoke survey will be administered to eligible patients over the phone from Trafford General Hospital, Manchester. The survey will also investigate the coping mechanisms and the preventative measures patients are taking to manage symptoms during the pandemic, and question what kinds of communication and support patient would like to be offered whilst waiting for treatment. This study will improve clinicians' and researchers' understanding of how patients are coping with symptoms during this pandemic, and provide information on how to better support patients who are waiting for knee surgery. This information could be used to enhance orthopaedic care during, and in the aftermath, of this pandemic. The information gathered in this study may also be used to inform a larger multi-centre study.

Untreated Sleep Apnea as an Aggravating Factor for Other Secondary Medical Conditions After Spinal...

Sleep ApneaSpinal Cord Injuries4 more

This cross-sectional prospective study will assess the potential association of more severe sleep apnea after spinal cord injury with more intense neuropathic pain, more severe spasticity, and more significant cardiovascular abnormalities including cardiac arrhythmias and blood pressure fluctuations. In addition, the participants' experience when undergoing home-based sleep screening test or hospital-unattended sleep screening test will be assessed in a semi-structured interview.

Prevalence of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Trauma Symptoms in a General Population Sample...

Post-traumatic Stress DisorderPsychological Trauma

The goal of this observational study is to learn about how many people have post-traumatic stress disorder and related symptoms in the general population of people without any mental illness in the Barcelona region of Catalonia, Spain. The main questions it aims to answer are: What is the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in a sample of healthy controls without other mental disorders? What is the prevalence of trauma-related symptoms in a sample of healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of dissociative symptoms (including symptoms of depersonalisation and somatoform dissociation) in a sample of healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of recent and childhood traumatic life events in a sample of healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of difficulties in psychosocial functioning in healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of depressive symptoms in healthy controls without mental illness? What is the prevalence of general psychiatric symptoms in healthy controls without mental illness? Participants will be asked to take part in an online screening programme, and then to come to an interview with a clinician who will apply validated scales to test the above.
