This study assesses severity of trauma, depression and anxiety symptoms of Syrian women under temporary protection who reside in Istanbul and types of exposed trauma that they have experienced. This study also evaluates the effectiveness of the Culturally Adapted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CA-CBT) in Syrian women under temporary protection who are with psychological distress in Turkey. Half of participants will receive Culturally Adapted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CA-CBT), while the other half will receive treatment as usual.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major health and socioeconomic problems in the world. Immune-enhancing enteral formula has been proven to significantly reduce infection rate in TBI patient. One of the ingredients that can be used in immunonutrition formulas to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress is French maritime pine bark extract. Objective: The main objective of present study is surveying the effect of French maritime pine bark extract on the clinical, nutritional and inflammatory status of TBI patients as the first human study in the world. Method: this is double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Block randomization are used. Intervention group will receive French maritime pine bark extract supplement (OLIGOPIN) 150 mg for 10 days. Control group will receive placebo for the same duration. Inflammatory status (IL-6, IL- 1β, C-reactive protein) and oxidative stress status (Malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity), at the base line, at the 5th day and at the end of the study (10th day) are measured. APACHE ІІ (acute physiologic and chronic health evaluation II) for assessment of clinical status of patients and Nutric questionnaires for assessment of nutritional status filled out at the base line, 5th day and the end of study. SOFA (sequential organ failure assessment) questionnaire for assessment of organ failure filled out every other day. The mortality rate will be asked by phone within 28 days of the start of the intervention. Weight, body mass index and body composition at baseline, 5th day and 10th day of intervention are measured. All analyses will be conducted by initially assigned study arm in an intention-to-treat analysis. The data will be expressed as mean ± SD.

Non-Steroidal or Opioid Analgesia Use for Children With Musculoskeletal Injuries

Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries, including limb injuries, are the most common cause for Emergency Department (ED) visits for children with pain. Broken arms and legs are known to cause moderate to severe pain in most children, yet previous research shows that children's pain in the emergency department is still under-treated. Further, children are less likely to receive appropriate pain medicine than adults with similar injuries. The purpose of this research study is to compare the effectiveness and safety of 3 different possible medication combinations, for the pain management of children with acute MSK limb injuries. The pain medicines the investigators are studying are ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol/Tempra), and hydromorphone (Dilaudid). This study will consist of 2 trials that will be run simultaneously. Eligible caregiver/ child pairs presenting to the emergency department with acute MSK limb injury will decide in which trial they wish to participate: the Opioid trial or the Non-Opioid trial. If they select the Non-opioid trial, they will have an equal chance of receiving either (a) Ibuprofen OR (b) Ibuprofen and acetaminophen. If they select the Opioid trial, they will have an equal chance of receiving either (a) Ibuprofen OR (b) Ibuprofen and acetaminophen OR (c) Ibuprofen and hydromorphone. Regardless of which study they choose, their child will, at minimum, receive Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) for their pain. All study medicines will be given in oral liquid form. This study will help the investigators figure out which pain medicine or combination of pain medicines works best for children with limb injuries. Promotion of adequate acute pain treatment of children presenting to the ED may help prevent the known short and long-term effects of inadequately treated pain in children, including unpleasant memories, stress and anxiety upon future visits to healthcare, and compromised functional outcomes such as missed school.

Twenty three systemically healthy individuals participated in this study. Ozone was applied immediately after surgery, at 1st day and 3rd day after gingivectomy surgery. In the photographs of the wounds, the difference in color were evaluated and measurements were performed at the baseline, 3rd, 7th, 14th days after surgery.

Veterans with co-occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorder (PTSD-SUD) experience more severe symptomatology and poorer response to existing treatments than Veterans with either disorder alone. Guilt is a common posttraumatic reaction and has been implicated as a risk factor for the development and maintenance of PTSD and substance use. Combat Veterans often report experiencing moral injury defined as perpetrating, failing to prevent, or witnessing acts that violate the values they live by in their civilian lives, which can lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Accordingly, reduction in guilt and increase in self-compassion may lead to improved quality of life for Veterans. This project will conduct a pilot study to evaluate changes in self-compassion, guilt, and PTSD-SUD symptom severity in a sample of Veterans after receiving 8 sessions of Mindful Self Compassion treatment (via a telehealth modality during COVID-19 pandemic). Findings will have significant impact on effective treatment options and lead to improvements in Veterans' quality of life and posttraumatic symptoms.

EMDR in Psychiatric Inpatients With Severe Mental Disorder

The study of psychological trauma has become increasingly important in the field of mental health research due to the strong negative impact it has on the course and prognosis of psychiatric pathologies. However, from a clinical point of view it is still an overlooked and even ignored component. There is scientific evidence that treating traumatic events at outpatient hospital services in patients with severe mental disorder improves both trauma-related symptoms and clinical symptoms. A first-line treatment for psychological trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. This therapy is recommended by the World Health Organization for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and which has obtained promising first results in patients with severe mental disorder. This project proposes to test whether EMDR therapy in addition to standard treatment is more effective than standard treatment alone in psychiatric in-patients with severe mental disorder, in terms of reducing symptoms related to psychopathology and trauma, and in terms of improving functioning. Our first hypothesis is that EMDR will be more effective than standard treatment alone in reducing the severity of psychiatric symptoms. Our second hypothesis is that EMDR will be more effective than standard treatment alone in reducing the severity of trauma-related symptoms. Our third hypothesis is that EMDR will be more effective than standard treatment alone in improving functioning.

Animal Assisted Mindfulness Intervention (AAMI) for Patients With Acquired Brain Injury

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of an animal assisted mindfulness intervention (AAMI) on patients with acquired brain injuries on their global severity of psychological distress. In addition, the effects on the patients' symptoms of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, mood, coping and mindfulness/self-compassion will be assessed. The study experimental condition consists of 6 weeks of intervention, containing 6 different modules. In every session, an animal will be present. In the control condition, the same program and same exercises will be used without the presence of or reference to animals. Sessions take place two times a week for 6 weeks (leading up to a total of 12 experimental/control sessions), each lasting for about 60 minutes. 24 participants are planned to be included, 12 patients in each group.
