The Effects of rTMS in Rehabilitation Following Spinal Cord Injury

The project will investigate whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can be used to potentiate/prime spinal cord injured patients' nervous systems for more intense rehabilitation exercise of longer duration - thus leading to greater recovery of motion function. The technique, in which a magnetic coil is positioned above the scalp and forms a magnetic field that activates the desired center of the brain (eg motor cortex), is used in clinical practice for the treatment of a number of disorders. However, although a combination of rTMS and gait training in SCI patients previously has proven beneficial, it is unknown whether additional functional gains can be achieved by combining rTMS and supervised, high-intensity resistance training. In this project, 30 newly-admitted patients will be recruited and randomized to receive either active rTMS and strength training (n = 15) or sham (imitated) rTMS + strength training, in parallel with standard care. The investigators hypothesize that the active rTMS group will have superior gains in locomotor function and muscle mass, compared to the sham group.

Single-Use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for Free Flap Donor Sites

Various management options for free flap donor sites that require split thickness skin grafting exist. None has proven superior from both a patient care and a cost standpoint. Major complications occurring at these surgical sites include wound breakdown, tendon exposure, and loss of function. We seek to investigate the use of the PICO single-use negative pressure wound therapy device in these surgical sites and determine if it can yield superior results to simpler methods.

The Effects of Low-level Laser Therapy in Extensor Tendon Injuries Between Zones 5-8

Tendon Injury - Hand

This study examines the rehabilitation results when low-level laser therapy is applied in zone 5-8 extensor tendon injuries. Rehabilitation results will be evaluated with both objective measurements and patient reported outcome measures. The study was planned as a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, two-arm study. Participants in both treatment groups will be given exercise therapy in accordance with the early active mobilization protocol and appropriate splint will be given to be used while exercising.

Alpha-Bisabolol Gel With Antihistamine Action

It will be developed and evaluated the antihistamine potential of a gel containing alpha-bisabolol. Method: Interventional and cross-sectional study, with convenience sampling, conducted with 20 volunteers. The forearm will be sensitized at four points (A, B, C and D). Point A: positive control will be sensitized with a drop of histamine at a concentration of 10 mg / Ml. Point B: histamine will apply and immediately after, the alpha bisabolol gel with a concentration of 0.5%. Point C: histamine and gel with 2.5% alpha-bisabolol will apply. Point D will be sensitized with a drop of histamine and 5.0% alpha-bisabolol gel. The test reading at each point will occur 15 minutes after the procedure. For the analysis of the results, the T Test will be applied.

Treatment for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Young Adults

Non-suicidal Self-injury

The purpose of this study is to investigate an intervention specifically for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in young adults. The goal of this 9-session outpatient intervention is to reduce the frequency and severity of NSSI. During Phase I, 12 patients will be treated in an open pilot trial. During Phase II, 60 patients will be treated in a randomized controlled pilot study in order to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and to investigate change in NSSI frequency and severity over time.

Delayed Versus Early Enoxaparin Prophylaxis After Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Brain injured patients are at high risk for forming blood clots in the legs and lungs. For non-brain injured trauma patients, we decrease the chances of these blood clots forming by placing the patients on a low dose of the blood thinner enoxaparin. Starting patients with a brain injury on the blood thinner is problematic, however, as this can theoretically cause the brain injury to worsen. Trauma surgeons wait a variable period of time before starting this blood thinner because waiting too long can result in the formation of these blood clots in the legs and lungs. Previous research has shown that some brain injuries which are of lower severity can have enoxaparin started at 24 hours after injury if the brain injury is stable on a repeated computed tomography (CT) scan of the head. This is a pilot study designed to look at the rates of worsening of brain injury if the low dose blood thinner is started at 24 versus 96 hours post-injury.
