Is Kinesio Taping Application Effective on Decreasing Injury Risk for Tennis Players

Research design: The study protocol was approved and required permissions were taken from related tennis club officials, and a written consent was obtained from all the participants' parents about the study. Thirty-three young tennis players aged between 9 and 12 were included in our study. Assessment were done bare (no tape), after 45 min of performance plus kinesio taping application (PP application) and after 45 min of gold text FP kinesio taping application (GT application). We were randomly taped with either PP or GT taping applications using an online random allocation software program (GraphPad Software QuickCalcs, GraphPad Software Inc., La Jolla, CA, USA). Thirty min of rest was given between 2 taping applications after the removal of the first tape. One participant was not able to complete the second taping procedure. PP and GT taping applications were done by using kinesio taping muscle facilitation techniques to Quadriceps and Gastrosoleus muscles. I-shaped tape with a tension of 10-35% was used for muscle facilitation. All patients were assessed by an experienced physiotherapist, and the tapings were done by another experienced physiotherapist in order to provide a single blind structure of the study.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy for Diabetic Foot Wounds

Diabetic wounds post digital amputation have poor healing in 30-45% of cases, resulting in 75% of patients undergoing a further amputation within the year, despite best wound management. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a promising safe and non invasive treatment that has been shown to improve healing in chronic ulcers and burns by promoting healing and decreasing risk of infection. The study will recruit patients on a hospital ward who have undergone a toe amputation for a infected non healing diabetic foot ulcer. Participants will be informed about the study, given an patient information sheet and invited to give informed consent. Consenting participants will undergo shockwave therapy three times in the seven days after their operation, in addition to standard wound care. Wound measurements, blood perfusion, tissue integrity, quality of life and pain scores will be recorded at baseline, after the third treatment, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks after recruitment to the study. The study aims to recruit 25 patients. The results will be compared to a matched retrospective cohort group who received standard wound care.

Serial Movement Assessment in Collegiate Athletes Who Perform Injury Prevention Training

Athletic injury can result in decreased athletic performance or removal from sport participation. There may also be psychological and financial impacts of athletic injury. Additionally, there can be long-term consequences, such as increased risk of subsequent injury or arthritis. Therefore, determining ways to prevent athletic injury from occurring is critical. Movement quality during sport is related to injury risk. Athletes who move poorly are generally at increased risk of injury compared to athletes who move well. Movement quality can be improved through exercise-based injury prevention training, thereby decreasing injury risk. This purposed of this study is to evaluate movement quality multiple times over the course of an athletic season in collegiate athletes who perform injury prevention training. The hypothesis is that movement quality will improve over the course of an athletic season.

Assessment of Vasomotion of People With Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury (SCI), causes loss of supra-spinal control of the sympathetic nervous system and in some cases loss of sensation. As a result, people with SCI have impaired thermoregulatory system and the consequence of this thermoregulatory dysfunction, is that they cannot respond to the environmental changes. All the above lead to dysregulation in vasomotor tone, skeletal muscle shivering and sweating dysfunction. It is well known that skin plays an important role in regulating body temperature and regulates interactions between the environment and human body. A previous study in people with incomplete SCI showed that there are no differences in core temperature between patients with different level of mobility and sensation and different level of lesion, but there are significant differences in skin temperature. As mentioned above people with SCI have an impaired thermoregulatory capacity due to sudomotor and vasomotor dysfunction and that leads to greater thermal strain during rest and exercise when they expose to hot conditions. A previous study that performed exercise in people with SCI, highlights the fact that because of the impaired evaporative heat loss during exercise in hot conditions, they are in great risk. Because of this risk they propose different cooling strategies that promote evaporation such as fans and water spraying. It is therefore important to observe the thermoregulatory function (vasomotion and sudomotor) in people with SCI when they are exposed to different environments (cold, neutral and warm).

Patients will be selected after studying clinical records.Patients who had general anesthesia due to an injury related to severe trauma within 6 to 12 months prior to inclusion will be included. Three self-survey will be completed by the patient: PDEQ, PCL-5 and a demographic questionnaire. According to the PDEQ and PCL-5 scores, an association between a peri-traumatic dissociation state and a post-traumatic stress disorder can be established.

The purpose of the proposed study is twofold: 1) The investigators will evaluate ultrasound imaging to screen trauma patients to identify patients at increased risk of postoperative complications associated with sarcopenia. 2) The investigators will evaluate a commercially-available oral nutritional supplement that has previously been evaluated in critically-ill intensive care patients and shown benefit for decreasing complications including decreased wound healing complications, decreased pressure ulcers, decreased skeletal muscle loss due to immobilization, and decreased one-year mortality.

BBOT: Bacterial Burden in Ortho Trauma Procedures

The purpose of this research project is to improve understanding of the potential role of highly sensitive bacterial tests in diagnosing infected non-healing fractures compared to the current standard of care, microbiologic culture (growing bacteria from tissue specimens in the laboratory). In order to understand the validity of the highly sensitive tests, parameters of the test in different groups of patients must be established. This study is examining how two highly sensitive tests compare to each other and to the standard of care (microbiologic culture) in three groups of patients. Group 1 is clean broken bone surgery undergoing plate and screw fixation, intramedullary nailing fixation where the fracture site is accessible, or staged treatment of a broken bones initially treated by joint spanning external fixation device. Group 2 will include patients having a plate and screws removed without clinical evidence of infection. Group 3 will be patients undergoing an initial procedure for fracture nonunion.
