Comparison Between Wound Vacuum Dressing and Standard Closure to Reduce Rates of Surgical Site Infections...

Surgical Site InfectionPancreatic Neoplasms5 more

Pancreaticoduodenectomy is associated with high perioperative morbidity, with surgical site infection (SSIs) being one of the most common complications. A retrospective study at Hopkins on SSIs in these patients identified the rate of SSIs to be 16.7% and pre-operative bile stent/drain and neoadjuvant chemotherapy were independent predictors of surgical site infection. Patients with these factors having a predicted risk of up to 32%. Another subsequent retrospective study demonstrated that the use of negative pressure wound therapy device was significantly associated with a decrease in the rate of SSIs. The hypothesis of the investigator(s) for the current study is that placement of Prevena Peel & Place Dressing (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, NPWT) in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy who are at high risk of SSIs will result in a significant decrease in their SSI rate.

PREVENTion of Clot in Orthopaedic Trauma

Blood ClotTrauma

The purpose of this study is to compare aspirin versus low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) (Enoxaparin) as a thromboprophylaxis in patients who sustain a fracture.

"THE EFFECTS OF LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY VERSUS STRAIN/COUNTER STRAIN TECHNIQUE IN ACUTE SOFT TISSUE...

Hamstring InjuryStrain Counter Strain

Muscle strain injuries are common in sports but are often misdiagnosed and maltreated. Their significance is often underestimated because most athletes can continue their daily activities soon after the injury. Proximal hamstrings strains have attracted greater attention because they have a high incidence which is approximately 42%.

Evaluation of Gingival Fissures Associated With Soft and Medium Toothbrushes

Gingival RecessionGingival Abrasion1 more

Gingival fissures (GF) have been suggested as risk indicators for clinical attachment loss (CAL) and gingival recession, especially in free surfaces and in patients with low plaque scores. The major factors related to the GF occurrence are high daily brushing frequencies, excessive force to brush, malpositioned teeth, use of abrasive dentifrices, and stiffness of the toothbrushes bristles. Thus, in order to better understand the pathogenesis and progression of GF, this study aim to evaluate the incidence and behavior of GF in young adults using soft and medium brushes, in a cross-over randomized clinical trial along 6 months.

Topical Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Eyelids

Antibiotic Side EffectEyelid; Wound8 more

The investigators propose a prospective randomized control trial testing the hypothesis that routine topical antibiotic prophylaxis does not significantly reduce the rate of infection after eyelid surgery.

Serum Level of Calpains Product as a Novel Biomarker of Acute Lung Injury Following Cardiopulmonary...

Lung InjuryAcute

More than 2 million patients worldwide receive heart surgery every year, majority of these surgical patients will undergo cardiopulmonary bypass. However, the incidence of postoperative acute lung injury due to cardiopulmonary bypass is still as high as 20% to 35%. According to clinical experience, the earlier lung damage is detected, the more successful the treatment will be. On the basis of traditional detection, the investigators found a new indicator, serum calpains, which are easy to obtain and have certain specificity. Importantly, they can predict postoperative acute lung injury within 1 hour after cardiac surgery. It is meaningful that this indicator can provide clinicians with early decision-making advice and immediate treatment for patients who may be at risk.

Hyperosmolality and Acute Kidney Injury After Cardiac Surgery

Acute Kidney InjuryOsmolality Disturbance1 more

The goal of this randomized controlled trial is to test if a hyperosmolar prime solution used for cardiopulmonary bypass increases the risk for acute postoperative kidney injury.

Comparing Pressure Injury Occurrence in Patients Using Two Different Mattresses

Pressure InjurySleep7 more

The purpose of this project is to compare a newly developed automatic reversing dynamic air mattress, with a regular care mattress, which is in daily use at the hospital. Focus will be on pressure relief in relation to occurrence of pressure injury, user satisfaction, and the mattresses impact on sleep and pain. The participants will be randomized to start with the intervention mattress or the control mattress. Outcomes will be measured via validated forms regarding pressure related injuries, quality of life, pain, and mattress comfort. Custom made forms will be used regarding resource use and comfort in the nursing service, especially in relation to position changes in the participants .

Comparative Assessment of Adjuvant Effect of Cultured Epidermal Autografts Versus Skin Allografts...

Burn Wounds

The investigators intend to conduct a comparative, monocentric prospective double-blind study with intra-subject randomization, to compare the results on wound healing of 2 adjuvant treatments to Meek micrografting technique : Cultured Epidermal Autografts and cryopreserved skin allografts.

Pediatric Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Retrospective, Real-Time and Repository Research

Acute Kidney InjuryRenal Injury1 more

This proposal will incorporate statistical models developed by the investigators to predict risk for acute kidney injury into our electronic medical record system, enabling an alert to notify providers of the risk status. Pediatric inpatients will be randomly assigned to be in the intervention group, for whom the notification will be implemented, or in the control group, who will receive usual care (no notification). The investigators believe the notification will increase appropriate screening for acute kidney injury and reduce the severity of acute kidney injury in the intervention group.
