The prevalence and complications of diabetes increase with age. Therefore, with the aging of the US and Veteran populations, there is an expectation of increased healthcare costs associated with treating diabetes and the associated complications of this disorder. One common complication is the diabetic foot ulcer. Diabetic foot ulcers are expensive to treat, can take a long time to heal and result in a decrease in patient quality of life. Patients remain susceptible to developing more foot ulcers over time. The goal of this project is to reduce the time it takes to heal a diabetic foot ulcer, increase the time between episodes of ulceration and improve the quality of life for diabetic foot ulcer patients.

Ulcerative ColitisThis is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to assess the safety and tolerability of multiple ascending doses of BT051 in subjects with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. Subjects will be randomised using a 3 active:1 placebo ratio to 3 ascending dose cohorts of 8 subjects and will be dosed daily for 28 days. The 3 initial dose levels will be 200 mg, 800 mg and 3200 mg per day. Progression to the next cohort will be based on the safety and tolerability of the previous cohort.

ER-TREG 01 is a single-center, open-label, fast-track phase I dose-escalation study designed to assess the safety profile and maximal tolerated dose (MTD) of a single infusion of ex vivo expanded autologous Treg in patients with active ulcerative colitis.

Effect of Compressive Therapies on the Healing of Venous Ulcers
Venous UlcersThe objective of the study is to compare the effect of two treatments on the healing of venous ulcers in follow-up people in two Primary Health Services, in a city in southern Brazil. The two treatments that will be tested are: (1) the high compression elastic bandage and (2) Unna boot. The two treatments are indicated for the treatment of people with venous insufficiency and who have an active ulcer. The treatment will last 26 weeks (6 months). Once a week, during 26 weeks, a nurse will perform the dressing and will apply the therapy high compression elastic bandage or Unna boot according to a drawing and in every two weeks an evaluator will assess the characteristics of the ulcers and the size.
