The Effect of Different Education Methods Before Invasive Urodynamics

Urologic DiseasesUrodynamics

Aim: This study was carried out to compare the effects of different education methods utilized before a urodynamic testing procedure on patients' pain, anxiety, readiness for the procedure, and satisfaction. Background: Urodynamic testing is an invasive procedure that causes pain and anxiety. Patient education is an evidence-based nursing intervention that relieves pain and anxiety and increases patient satisfaction. Design: The study is a single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial. Method: Participants (n=80) were randomly assigned to four groups. While patients in the control group were provided with routine clinical information, patients in the intervention group were given education with brochures, videos, and brochure-supported videos. The research data were collected by using a Data Collection Form with items about participants' descriptive characteristics, the State Anxiety Inventory, and the Visual Analog Scale.

Audit-and-feedback to Improve Antimicrobial-prescribing Among Urologists

Urologic DiseasesAntibacterial Drug Adverse Reaction

Antimicrobial resistance is one of today''s most urgent public health problems. An important strategy to slow the spread of antimicrobial resistance is the promotion of judicious antimicrobial use. There are many opportunities to reduce unnecessary antimicrobial-prescribing, including in patients undergoing surgical procedures. The following study will specifically study opportunities to improve antimicrobial use in patients undergoing common urologic procedures at hospitals in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Guidelines recommend giving antibiotics for no more than 24-hours after most urologic procedures, but the investigators have shown that the unnecessary use of post-procedural antimicrobials is common in this setting. In a national cohort of nearly 30,000 VHA patients, excessive post-procedural antimicrobials were prescribed after 37.2% of urologic procedures for a median duration of 3.0 excess days. In this study, the investigators will evaluate whether giving regular feedback to providers at 3 VHA hospitals can reduce unnecessary antimicrobial use after urologic procedures.

Bioequivalence Study of the Second Generation Dutasteride and Tamsulosin HCl Combination Capsule...

Urologic Diseases

The purpose of this study is to assess the bioequivalence of the second generation dutasteride and tamsulosin hydrochloride (HCL) combination capsule versus currently available commercial combination of dutasteride 0.5 milligrams (mg) and tamsulosin HCL 0.4 mg capsule in healthy adult male subjects. Subjects in this study will receive either a single oral dose of the second generation dutasteride 0.5 mg and tamsulosin 0.4 mg combination capsule or a single dose of commercially available combination of dutasteride 0.5 mg and tamsulosin HCL 0.4 mg capsule followed by a 28-day washout period both in fed state. The study will enroll approximately 92 healthy adult male subjects in order to complete approximately 76 evaluable subjects. The total duration of a subject's involvement in this study is anticipated to be approximately 12 weeks.

Reaching active aging makes it important to implement new methods affecting the biological age of a person. Biochemical parameters of a blood test are aging biomarkers that are ones of the most accessible for testing. We know that, with age, there is increase in levels of LDL, triglycerides, homocysteine and other biomarkers relating the body state. Methods of extracorporeal hemocorrection showed good results in this area. For instance, the use of plasmapheresis is very effective during prophylaxis, treatment and rehabilitation after various diseases/injuries. The main effects of plasmapheresis are related to removal of endo- and exotoxins, including products of lipid peroxidation, and to draining effect as a result of a heavy flow of interstitial fluid containing products of pathometabolism into the blood stream within concentration gradient (by "dynamic equilibrium" in concentration of different substances in intracellular, interstitial and intravascular compartments). These effects are also related to release of receptors, their sensitization to their own neurohumoral regulation mechanisms, to insulin, in particular (as consequences, lower glucose tolerance, lower substrate glycation).

Breath Gas Measurement of Propofol During Anesthesia in Patients With Endourological Procedures...

Urological Disease

Propofol can be measured continuously in breath gas during anesthesia. This study compares propofol concentration in plasma and breath gas and processed electroencephalographic monitoring (bispectral index) under clinical conditions with patients and total intravenous anesthesia. Target controlled infusion technique is used to deliver adequate propofol concentration in plasma.

Central Obesity in Cases of OAB

Urologic DiseasesOveractive Bladder Syndrome2 more

Obesity is not a homogeneous condition and that the regional distribution of adipose tissue is important to understanding the relation of obesity to disturbances in glucose and lipid metabolism. Central abdominal fat is composed of abdominal subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Regional distribution appears to be an important indicator for metabolic alterations since an inconstant correlation between body mass index (BMI) and these disturbances have been found. Visceral obesity is associated with increased adipocytokine production, proinflammatory activity, deterioration of insulin sensitivity, increased risk of developing diabetes, "high-triglyceride/low-HDL cholesterol dyslipidemia," hypertension and atherosclerosis. It might be more precise to divide central abdominal fat into subcutaneous(S) and visceral (V) fat surface area and volume and even ratio (S/V); risk factors for cardiovascular disease, particularly those related to glucose and lipid metabolism and hypertension, being>0.4; with evaluation of visceral fat functionality by visceral adiposity index (VAI) with integration with lipid profile. Adding bladder wall thickness with perivesical fat as a factor may impair bladder function and contribute to dysregulation. The data on the association between central adiposity with OAB symptoms and Urodynamics is not mature.
