In an observational multi-centre study (HEROS), the effects of starting treatment with rosuvastatin were assessed, on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal achievement, in patients with a dissimilar high-risk profile who had not been treated with cholesterol lowering drugs at least in the past three months. Also set-up costs of rosuvastatin treatment and proportional changes in LDL-C and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were studied.

Epidemiology of Thromboembolism Disease: A Cohort Study

The purpose of this study is to determine different risk factors of thromboembolic disease. Different points will be studied do different types of thromboembolic disease (distal Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), proximal DVT, Pulmonary Embolism (PE) and DVT, PE without DVT) have the same clinical significance (risk factors and prognosis) ? Is it necessary to obtain a detailed history of thromboembolic disease ? Do older patients have particular risk factors ? Do preventive treatments modify the level of risk factors and the clinical signs of thromboembolic disease ? Do predictive clinical scores have the same performance for both in and outpatients ? Can patients with a potential high level of thromboembolic risk (surgery, pregnancy) but no clinical thromboembolic symptoms, develop a low risk ? The evolution of the disease in patients with negative or positive Venous ThromboEmbolism (VTE) exploratory tests.

Atorvastatin Versus Ezetimibe and Fenofibrate as a Lipid-lowering Strategy

The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and non-inferiority of a lipid-lowering medication regimen comprised of the medications ezetimibe and fenofibrate taken daily, versus atorvastatin daily in lowering levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) cholesterol. Additionally, other aims would include effects on other types of blood cholesterol and examining the safety of the ezetimibe and fenofibrate regimen, as compared to atorvastatin.

The Framingham Study: Examining DNA Markers and Links to Diseases

Since 1948, residents of Framingham, Massachusetts, have participated in a program that collects blood samples and clinical data to provide a rare and valuable database for scientific research. The purpose of this study is to support this national resource by aiding in its research capacity. Specifically, researchers in this study will (1) investigate heart, lung, and blood diseases; stroke; memory loss; joint disease; bone loss; deafness; cancer; blood vessel diseases and other health conditions, and (2) examine DNA and its relationship to risk of developing these disease and health conditions. Approximately 330 families have participated in the Framingham Study. Participants will be required to undergo a four-hour exam and to take that exam every two years thereafter. During the exam, the Framingham investigators will (1) interview participants about medical status, health issues, and lifestyles; (2) perform a regular physical exam; (3) obtain blood and urine samples and administer a glucose-tolerance test; (4) supervise a brisk six-minute treadmill walk; (5) administer an ultrasound procedure; and (6) review and obtain copies of medical and hospital records. Participants will also be asked to complete a questionnaire at home regarding dietary and health habits.

Study of Abnormal Blood Clotting in Children With Stroke

Effective treatment and prevention strategies for childhood stroke and porencephaly can only be developed once the causes are understood. There is increasing evidence that inherited and acquired coagulation abnormalities alone or in combination with environmental factors, predispose to arterial and venous thrombosis. Inherited abnormalities of factor V Leiden, prothrombin, protein C, protein S, and antithrombin III may account for many of these thromboses. At present there is little information on the existing distribution of these coagulation anomalies in children with thrombosis. Recent reports also suggest that these clotting abnormalities may be responsible for some instances of intracranial hemorrhage, porencephaly, cerebral palsy and fetal death. This study will measure the frequency of several coagulation factor abnormalities (factor V Leiden, prothrombin 20210A, protein C, protein S, antithrombin III, and antiphospholipid antibodies) in children with a history of porencephaly and stroke, and will compare these to the prevalence of these mutations in population controls and family members. We will also describe the exogenous conditions which in concert with these coagulation factors, may have led to the development of thrombosis in these children....

Analysis of the Variation of the Retinal Vascularization After a Prolonged Effort

The cardiovascular parameters of prolonged physical exercice have been studied, but very little data is available about the retinal vascularization. The eye allows in vivo visualization of micro-vascularisation and is considered as an excellent marker of general vascular condition. The marathon is an intense and prolonged exercise (running 42.195 km) in aerobic environment. Thus the investigators propose to study the vascular parameters of the retina, before and after this physical exercise. This will allow : 1) to collect information on the physiology of the retinal vascularization to prolonged effort, 2) to detect any retinal damage (haemorrhages, edema, occlusion ...), not known to date. The results may highlight vascular effects related to retinal hypoxia (venous tortuosity, haemorrhage, venous occlusion, hypoxic edema). Furthermore the results may urge prevention in this sport more and more democratized. the investigators hypothesized that prolonged physical exercice causes a change in retinal vascularization.
