Shanghai Eye Study for Adults

Blindness,Visual ImpairmentRefractive Error3 more

Blindness and visual impairment severely impact the visual health and life quality of people, particularly the 2.566 million senior citizens aged at 65 and above in Shanghai. The main reason is uncorrected refractive error, of which, 62.1% can be solved through refractive correction. For this reason, the uncorrected refractive errors of 154,000 senior citizens in Shanghai can be taken as a priority among the public health issues to prevent blindness. Now, with the aim to reduce the prevalence rate of blindness and visual impairment, it is planned to establish a public health service mechanism in terms of refractive error screening and correction for the elderly by relying on Shanghai's three-level (city-district-community) eye diseases prevention network, using proper refractive correction technology, and moving related services forward to communities in order to screen, identity, and correct blindness and visual impairment caused by refractive errors as early as possible.

Quantification of Metamorphopsia in Patients With Epiretinal Membranes

Epiretinal Membrane

Aim of this study is to examine metamorphopsia before and 3 months after vitrectomy with membrane peeling among patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes. Therefore, the correlation between the Alleye App and the M-chart test before and after ERM surgery and the associations of OCT biomarkers to postsurgical changes in metamorphopsia scores will be examined.

Binocular Vision Alternations and fMRI Activation After ICL Implantation for High Myopia

Binocular Vision Disorder

Implantable collamer lens (ICL) is one of the most effective operation for high myopia. Due to refractive correction changed, and prism effect of the spectacle removed, in the early stage after ICL implantation, binocular function might be dysfunction, leading to asthenopia, blurred vision, double vision and so on. This study will recruit the high myopia subjects that scheduled for ICL implantation, purpose to investigate the binocular vision alternations and brain activation that impacted by ICL implantation.

Touching the World With a Cane: Cognitive and Neural Processes

Visual ImpairmentHealthy

The use of tools is ubiquitous in our lives and allows us to expand the sensorimotor capacities of our body. Much research has been done on the subject in sighted people over the past decades. This work has mainly focused on the motor aspect of using the tool, neglecting the sensory aspect. However, any action involving a tool carries sensory information, for example in the use of the white cane by blind people. 26% (> 200,000) of blind people in France use a white cane to get around. By sweeping the cane on the ground, they use it as a sensorimotor extension of their body to extract information from the environment in order to locate a pedestrian crossing or possible obstacles. While it is well established that the tools increase the user's motor skills, we have only just begun to clarify how they also function as sensory extensions of the user's body and how this phenomenon is potentially dependent on constant use of the tool to compensate for a missing sense, as is the case with blind people using a cane. The aim of this study is to fill this important gap in our knowledge.

Observational Study to Evaluate Fluid Resolution and Effectiveness in Patients Receiving Beovu in...

Neovascular Age-related Macular Degeneration (nAMD)Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

This study is a prospective, non-interventional, multicenter, open-label study in nAMD and DME patients being treated with brolucizumab according to the EU SmPC. An observational study design, without a strict, mandated visit schedule or mandated treatment regimen was chosen as the most appropriate to collect available data in a real life setting. For that reason, this NIS does not impose a therapy protocol, diagnostic/therapeutic procedure or a visit schedule. The diagnostic or monitoring procedures are only those ordinarily applied to the therapeutic strategy and to routine clinical care and will take place as per investigator's discretion. This includes e.g. visit frequency, injection frequency and types of assessments performed - only data from routine medical practice will be collected as part of the study.

Development of a Multi-sensory Rehabilitation Program for People With Ultra Low Vision

Low Vision BlindnessVisual Impairment2 more

This research is aimed to address one of the big gaps in the current vision rehabilitation protocols for people with profound visual impairment by evaluating a multisensory approach. There are a growing number of clinical trials that recruit people with end-stage eye diseases and the rehabilitation plan following various treatments is not clear. It is important to address this in order to maximize the efficacy of such treatments and to improve the quality of life in people with profound visual impairment.

Optic Nerve Diameter and Intraocular Pressure Changes in Patients Undergoing Vitrectomy Under General...

Vision DisordersOcular Surface Disease

This study aimed to measure optic nerve sheath changes in the intraoperative period in patients who underwent vitrectomy surgery and to investigate the intraoperative factors that may affect this. Standard anesthesia protocol will be applied to all patients participating in the study. Optic nerve sheath diameter measurements of the patients taken to the operating room will be made on the operating table by ultrasonography method. Standard anesthesia induction will be performed following SpO2 and ECG monitoring in routine anesthesia monitoring. Depth of anesthesia will be evaluated with routine hemodynamic data.

Factors in Learning And Plasticity: Healthy Vision

Central Visual ImpairmentMacular Degeneration

A greater understanding of plasticity after central vision loss can inform new therapies for treating low vision and has the potential to benefit millions of individuals suffering from low vision. The treatment of low vision is particularly relevant to the mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) to support research on visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, and preservation of sight. The comparison of different training and outcome factors is in line with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Research Domain Criteria (RDOC) framework and studies in an aging population are consistent with the mission of the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

SmartHMD for Improved Mobility

Low VisionOrientation4 more

The National Eye Institute estimated about 3 million people over age 40 in the US had low vision in 2010 and projects an increase to nearly 5 million in 2030 and 9 million in 2050. Current assistive technologies are a patchwork of mostly low-technology aids with limited capabilities that are often difficult to use, and are not widely adopted. This shortfall in capabilities of assistive technology often stems from lack of a user-centered design approach and is a critical barrier to improve the everyday activities of life (EDAL) and the quality of life (QOL) for individuals with low vision. An intuitive head mounted display (HMD) system on enhancing orientation and mobility (O&M) and crosswalk navigation, could improve independence, potentially decrease falls, and improve EDAL and QOL. The central hypothesis is that an electronic navigation system incorporating computer vision will enhance O&M for individuals with low vision. The goal is to develop and validate a smartHMD by incorporating advanced computer vision algorithms and flexible user interfaces that can be precisely tailored to an individual's O&M need. This project will address the specific question of mobility while the subject crosses a street at a signaled crosswalk. This is a dangerous and difficult task for visually impaired patients and a significant barrier to independent mobility.

Expressive Arts-based Intervention for Adults With Age-related Visual Impairment

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an age-related eye disease resulting in vision loss. Persons with AMD not only experience a gradual loss of ability in independent living, but also profound impairment in psychosocial well-being.The multimodal, expressive arts-based intervention (EXABI) that emphasizes imagination and creativity can be an engaging, enjoyable, and safe process of empowerment. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness and process of an expressive arts-based intervention in enhancing psychosocial wellness and adjustment to gradual vision loss of persons with AMD. This current study will adopt a 2-arm randomized controlled design with treatment-as-usual control. Upon screening for inclusion exclusion criteria, baseline data will be collected; and eligible participants will be randomized into either an 8-week Expressive Arts-based intervention group or Treatment-As-Usual control group.
