Feasibility and Efficacy of Assisstive Tactile and Auditory Communicating Devices

Visual Impairment

This pilot study will integrate multi-sensor fusion techniques (software) to effectively combine information obtained from the newly embedded infrared, ultrasound, and stereo-camera-based sensor systems (hardware) that are implemented into the VIS4ION platform. The core of this technology is based on 4 components: (1) a wearable vest with several distinct range and image sensors embedded. These sensors extract pertinent information about obstacles and the environment, which are conveyed to (2) a haptic interface (belt) that communicates this spatial information to the end-user in real-time via an intuitive, ergonomic and personalized vibrotactile re-display along the torso. (3) A smartphone serves as a connectivity gateway and coordinates the core components through WiFi, bluetooth, and/or 4G LTE, (4) a headset that contains both binaural, open-ear, bone conduction speakers (leaving the ear canal patent for ambient sounds) and a microphone for oral communication-based voice recognition during use of a virtual personal assistant (VPA). Blindfolded-sighted, and blind subjects in a real-world, combined obstacle avoidance / navigation task will serve as an independent measure of overall improvements in the system as well as a roadmap for future avenues to enhance performance. Further, a prospective, randomized crossover, controlled, non-blinded phase will be conducted in Thailand as part of this study to compare and evaluate effectiveness of the wearable vest for increasing navigation and quality of life.

A Patch Free Treatment for Young Children With Amblyopia

The purpose of this study is to test whether a binocular treatment can improve vision and motor function in young children with amblyopia. The proposed treatment is an animation series that has been modified so that different characters in the animation are presented to each eye. The contrast of the images shown to the amblyopic eye is higher than the contrast of the images shown to the fellow eye. The aim of the treatment is to promote co-operation between the two eyes and improve visual and motor outcomes. We will compare the benefits of this binocular treatment to patching, whereby the better eye is occluded with an eye patch for two hours per day to force the usage of the weaker eye. We hypothesize that the binocular treatment will improve vision and motor outcomes in young children with amblyopia, and that these improvements will be superior to any effects of patching.

Patients may experience metamorphopsia, or image distortion, after having vitrectomy to repair their rhegmatogenous retinal detachments especially those with a detached macula. Retinal displacement, as measured on autofluorescence photography, likely contributes to this distortion. It is thought that the retina slips inferiorly due to the residual subretinal fluid shifting as the patient transitions from the supine position intraoperatively to the sitting up position in the immediate postoperative period. By having the patient immediate position facedown or according to the retinal break, the risk of slippage is theoretically decreased.
