Countermeasures for Visual Impairment in Astronauts
Space Flight Associated Neuro-ocular SyndromeThis study is being done to prevent changes in the vision of astronauts during prolonged residence on the International Space Station or a mission to Mars. This project will provide data about the efficacy of lower body negative pressure to mimic daily upright posture by intermittently lowering central venous pressure while in simulated microgravity (3 days of bed rest). The investigators expect that 3 days of bed rest will increase choroid thickness, and choroid area. The investigators hypothesize that nightly LBNP (-20mmHg) will prevent these changes.
Design and Clinical Evaluation of a Smartphone-based Low Vision Enhancement System
Low VisionThe primary objective is to compare the effectiveness and adverse side-effects of the virtual bioptic telescope and virtual projection screen in a new head-mounted video-based low vision enhancement system (LVES) with a wide field of view to currently employed specifications for head-mounted video display low vision enhancement technology. Secondary objectives are to acquire qualitative information from patients to evaluate the functioning of the system, to optimize system features and operations, and to assess the value patients place on system features, functions, and operating parameters relative to those of current technology. Investigators will conduct a comparative effectiveness study to determine if the novel vision enhancing features of LVES 2 provide low vision patients with benefits superior to those provided by existing technology.
Diabetic Retinopathy Tethered Augmented Reality With Eye4 Study
Diabetic RetinopathyLow VisionDiabetes has reached epidemic levels in North America and with it, diabetic retinopathy is increasingly affecting the vision of millions of people. Despite treatment many patients still have vision loss that cannot be improved medically or with prescription eyeglasses. Our study is going to look at an FDA Class 1 Exempted visual aid that uses augmented reality to help people see better.
Music Listening for Wellbeing in Adults With Acquired Visual Impairment
Visual ImpairmentLow Vision4 moreA visual impairment (VI) is often associated with reduced psychological wellbeing. Music can be used in a variety of ways to promote psychological wellbeing. Music intervention studies demonstrate that listening to music can provide a distraction from unpleasant thoughts/feelings. Hence, music may serve as a catalyst to improve mood and relieve feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. The purpose of this study is to investigate if it is feasible for people with acquired VI to self-deliver daily music listening (music alone or with mindful music listening instructions) for wellbeing, in participants homes, for four-weeks, and to collect data remotely on efficacy in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression and treatment fidelity.
Blueberry Effects on Dark Vision and Glare Recovery
Blindness and Low VisionClinical evidence for effects of plant anthocyanins on vision, and particularly night vision is controversial. Two clinical trials were conducted to investigate whether blueberry juice consumption affected visual dark adaptation, functional night vision, and recovery after photo-bleaching of the retina. One trial (S2) employed a 3 week intervention and washout period, and two doses of blueberries plus a placebo. The other trial (L1) employed a 12 week intervention plus an 8 week washout and tested one blueberry juice dose against a juice placebo.
The Baltimore Reading and Eye Disease Study
Refractive ErrorVisual Impairment2 moreThe Baltimore Reading and Eye Disease Study (BREDS) is a two year study to determine the prevalence of vision problems in an early school age population with reading difficulty. Comprehensive vision and reading tests will be administered to 400 students at participating schools in the Baltimore City Public School system. A secondary goal is to examine the impact of vision treatment on reading performance. Children with refractive error or convergence insufficiency will be provided treatment free of charge. The investigators will evaluate the impact that the treatment has on vision function and reading performance.
Consequence of Unilateral Vestibular Loss on Visual Abilities
Vestibular SchwannomaVisual Impairment1 moreUnilateral vestibular lesions are frequent and disabling pathologies causing a set of oculomotor, postural and perceptual symptoms. These symptoms reduce over time according to a vestibular compensation. However, vestibular compensation should be considered as a set of sub-processes whose duration and recovery level differ. Indeed, after a unilateral vestibular loss, some functions remain asymmetrical as a long-term effect, and these disorders may be observed among patients with no functional complaints. Balance disorders may persist in some patients. The equilibration consists in handling real-time a considerable amount of information coming from the environment and the subject himself, allowing an adaptation of the position and movements of his body to satisfy the needs of posture, balance and orientation. This information comes mainly from the vision, the vestibule and the somesthesic system. It is pre-treated and harmonized in the brainstem, before being transmitted to the higher brain centres. Brain centers thus learn about peripheral conditions. According to these and the project of the movement, brain centers address in response orders to ophtalmological and motor effectors ensuring look, posture and balance to be provided. The eye is a cornerstone of the balancing system through the retina, an environmental sensor, and its extraocular muscles, effectors of the system. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of acute unilateral vestibular loss on visual abilities evaluated by orthoptic balance in patients who presented acute unilateral vestibular loss by surgical deafferentation (removal of vestibular schwannoma, vestibular neurotomy or surgical labyrinthectomy for Meniere's disease), during the early phase and decline of vestibular compensation. Our secondary objective is to evaluate the effect of a pre-existing anomaly of the visual abilities evaluated by orthoptic assessment on the vestibular compensation capacities. All in all, this study seems crucial to improve the management of patients with unilateral vestibular dysfunction and contribute to improving their clinical management. As a standardized management of these patients, an audio-vestibular evaluation will be performed before surgery (-1D), after acute unilateral vestibular loss at the early stage (+7D), and then after vestibular compensation (+2M) as well as an orthoptic evaluation. A good tolerance of the orthoptic evaluation is expected in this surgical context.
Self-management for Dual Sensory Impaired
Hearing LossLow VisionThis study aims to determine the effectiveness of a self-management program for elderly with an acquired and concurrent hearing and visual impairment due to age-related disease processes.
Effect of Ketamine in Depressive Symptoms of Elderly Patients With Visual Impairment.
Depression in Old AgeKetaminethe prevalence of depression in elderly is from 4 to 30% and is associated with a lower quality of life mayor medical comorbidity, and increased mortality. Although there are various treatments for depression in the elderly, the study of interventions in resistant depression is limited and there are few reports of the efficacy and safety profile of alternative interventions such as ketamine in the elderly. The final objective of the present study is to report the effects of a single infusion of ketamine on the depressive symptoms in patients undergoing ophthalmologic surgery

Very Low Vision Secondary to Wet Age-related Macular DegenerationThis study is designed to evaluate the effect of Conbercept therapy on visual acuity and anatomic outcomes and safety observed in subjects with very low vision secondary to wet age-related macular degeneration.
