Hemodialysis Vitamin D Pilot

Vitamin D DeficiencyRenal Failure Chronic Requiring Hemodialysis

Vitamin D is a prohormone obtained through diet, supplementation, or sun exposure. Once absorbed, this nutritional vitamin D undergoes a two-step reaction in the liver and in the kidney to become the active hormone, calcitriol. Besides the kidney, many other body tissues are capable of local vitamin D activation. This local tissue activity is important for maintenance of health and relies on adequate levels of nutritional vitamin D. Not only are dialysis patients deficient in calcitriol due to kidney failure, but they are also deficiency in nutritional vitamin D. Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with higher rates of death, heart and blood vessel disease, osteoporosis, falls, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. Despite this, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials (RCT) examining the effects of nutritional vitamin D in hemodialysis (HD) patients. The investigators hypothesize that long-term supplementation with nutritional vitamin D in HD patients improves survival and cardiovascular outcomes. Before embarking on a large scale RCT, the investigators propose a small pilot RCT with 20 hemodialysis patients to: i) To determine the effects of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in raising blood vitamin D levels; ii) To determine the feasibility and barriers to successful randomization and adherence to treatment protocols, which will inform subsequent studies.

Influence of Vitamin D Treatment on Multi-systemic Functions in Young Men With Vitamin D Deficiency...

Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D has multiple systemic effects: bone and calcium metabolism, muscle function, insulin responsiveness, body-composition regulation, cell differentiation, and the immune system. Proper status of vitamin D is found to be related to risk reduction in hypertension, cardiac and vascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and others. Furthermore, vitamin D supplementation resulted in improved endothelial function. Limited sun exposure may lead to vitamin D deficiency, and it may be assumed that modern life styles lead to a lack of sun exposure. Long work-days may be the primary risk factor for vitamin D deficiency. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of vitamin D treatment on multi systemic functions in young healthy men with vitamin D deficiency due to working conditions.

Treatment of Hypovitaminosis D in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid ArthritisHypovitaminosis D

This study recruits individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and low vitamin D concentrations. Subjects are dosed with vitamin D or placebo for one year. Primary outcome is change in bone turnover markers, additionally, bone mineral density and parameters of RA status are evaluated throughout the study.

Does Treatment of Hypovitaminosis D Increase Calcium Absorption?

OsteoporosisOsteopenia4 more

The purpose is to perform a one-year study designed to assess whether treatment of hypovitaminosis D increases intestinal absorption of calcium, subsequent retention of calcium within bone, decreases bone turnover, and favorably impacts upon skeletal muscle mass, functional status, measures of physical function and quality of life. I hypothesize that treatment of hypovitaminosis D results in improved intestinal calcium absorption, greater retention of calcium within the bone reservoir and improved physical function, quality of life and muscle mass.

Cholecalciferol for Vitamin D in Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Patients

Cystic FibrosisVitamin D Deficiency

The main aim of the research question to test the primary hypothesis of this study, namely, Does 12 weeks of an additional 5000 IU daily of cholecalciferol increase serum 25OHD levels in adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) who have vitamin D deficiency relative to placebo?

Health Benefits of Vitamin D and Calcium in Women With PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

Polycystic Ovarian SyndromeVitamin D Deficiency

The investigators conducted a prospective un-blinded pilot study of Vitamin D plus Calcium (Ca) supplementation in overweight (BMI > 27) premenopausal women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), as defined by the Rotterdam Criteria, 2003, and who were deficient in vitamin D as reflected by serum 25-hydroxy (25-OH) vitamin D (serum levels < 20 ng/mL).

A Study of MK0217A and Dietary Supplement in Men and Postmenopausal Women With Osteoporosis (0217A-227)...

OsteoporosisVitamin D Deficiency

The purpose of this study is to test the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of an investigational drug and dietary supplement to reduce the risk of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency during treatment of osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women.

Optimizing Vitamin D Nutrition in Healthy Adults

Vitamin D Deficiency

The purpose of this study is to determine the average dosage of oral vitamin D supplementation to maintain optimal vitamin D levels in the body and to see if there are differences in the response to oral vitamin D supplementation between African-American and Caucasian subjects.

Nursing-Home Residents Given Bread Fortified With Vitamin D3

Vitamin D DeficiencyLow Bone Density

Background. For older adults, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) higher than 75 nmol/L lowers fracture risk and attainment of this 25(OH)D target may require 125 mcg (5000 IU)/d of vitamin D3. Objective: We wanted to characterize the safety and efficacy of fortifying bread with a biologically meaningful amount of vitamin D3.

Effects of High Intensity Statin Therapy on Steroid Hormones and Vitamin D in Type 2 Diabetic Men...

Diabetes MellitusType 26 more

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of high intensity statin therapy on testicular and adrenal steroids and vitamin D levels in type 2 diabetes males. It is a prospective study, conducted between march 2021 and July 2022, including 60 men with type 2 diabetes, aged 40 - 65 years, statin-free, and in whom a treatment with high intensity statin was indicated. The patients had two visits, before and six months after a daily intake of 40 mg of atorvastatin. During each visit, they underwent a clinical examination including the Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male (ADAM) questionnaire and a fasting blood sample was collected for biological and hormonal measurements.
