Preeclampsia Research on Vitamin D, Inflammation, & Depression

Pre-EclampsiaDepression2 more

This study is designed to comprehensively investigate the anti-inflammatory role of vitamin D in reproductive aged women, and its association with preeclampsia and depression. Findings will have substantial impact providing new information implicated in the development of preeclampsia (a condition that may include hypertension, tissue swelling caused by excessive fluid, and kidney stress) and postpartum depression (after birth). Additionally, the study is designed to understand how early mental health screening and evaluation can help pregnant women reduce their risk of developing postpartum depression. Testing the acceptability and effectiveness of this mental health screening, education and referral program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center will provide valuable patient centered qualitative and quantitative data that can be used in future services planning. The study will enroll up to 200 pregnant women (in third trimester of pregnancy) in total.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Low Bone Mineral Content in Children

Vitamin D DeficiencyObesity

The Vitamin D study is designed to investigate the effect of body fat mass on vitamin D levels in children. Earlier studies have shown that individuals with increased fat mass may have low vitamin D levels. Our specific hypothesis states that children with increased fat mass will have lower blood levels of vitamin D when compared to non-obese children.Since vitamin D is the primary hormone for bone mineralization in humans, low levels of vitamin D could lead to decreased bone mineral content in these children.

Associations of Vitamin D Deficiency and Vitamin D Receptor Polymorphisms With the Risk of Primary...

Vitamin D DeficiencyPrimary Open- Angle Glaucoma

This study investigated whether vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism is altered in primary open-angle glaucoma subjects carrying the risk allele and vitamin D deficiency is an important factor in the development of glaucoma. Primary open-angle glaucoma patients and age-matched people in the Han population were enrolled. Serum levels of 1a, 25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 were measured by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay. Vitamin D receptor polymorphic analysis was studied by real-time polymerase-chain reaction high resolution melting analysis.

Effect of vitaminD3 or 25(OH)D3 Fortified Dairy on Vitmain D Status and CVD Risk Markers

Hypovitaminosis DCardiovascular Diseases

This study aims to compare the acute effect of consuming milk and butter fortified with either vitamin D3 or 25 (OH) D3 on serum/plasma vitamin D status in humans. In addition, the effect of vitamin D3 or 25 (OH) D3 in milk and butter on certain CVD risk markers and cognitive function will be examined.

The Genetics Behind Vitamin D Status (VitDgen)

Vitamin D Deficiency

The overall purpose of the study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between 26 different single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vitamin D pathway, ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation of the skin and vitamin D status. The hypothesis is that vitamin D status are influated by different genetic genotypes in the vitamin D pathway.

Does Vitamin D Deficiency Associated With Hypercoagulability & Increased Thrombin Generation?

Chest Pain

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Recently, a growing body of evidence has identified Vitamin D deficiency as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, there is an increasing interest to explore the mechanism in which vitamin D deficiency affect the cardiovascular system. The investigators want to examine the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and the coagulation status in the subjects. The applied the calibrated automated thrombogram (CAT) to assess thrombin generation in plasma as a measure of overall thrombotic activity, and thus to suggest a mechanism that may explain the link between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease. Our study population are going to include 100 patients from the internal departments in Emek hospital, who present with chest pain but without acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The investigators will take blood samples from the subjects to measure the serum vitamin D levels and the generation of thrombin. The patients will be divided into four groups according to the level of vitamin D to evaluate the effect of vitamin D levels in the blood on coagulability and thrombotic activity in these patients.

Vitamin D Levels in Patients With Central Retinal Vein Occlusion- a Prospective Controlled Study...

Vitamin d DeficiencyCentral Retinal Vein Occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a common vascular disease of the eye. Studies have shown that the risk of venous thrombosis is higher in winter so even concerning RVO. Studies have shown a possible link between sun exposure and venous thrombosis. Vitamin D levels have been shown to have a similar seasonal variation, with a peak occurring in the summer. The primary source of vitamin D is from sunlight when ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation penetrates the skin and converts 7-dehydrocholesterol to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol vitamin D3 (25-OHVitD) via previtamin D. In Stockholm situated at latitude 59˚ 20΄ North, it is not possible to synthesize vitamin D at sufficient levels in winter and the exposure time required to reach a standard dose is impractical from at least October through March. The aim of the study is to evaluate vitamin D levels in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) patients and compare them with the vitamin D levels in randomly selected control patients matched for age and month of disease onset. This is to evaluate whether vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor in the onset of CRVO. The hypothesis of the study is that patients with CRVO have lower levels of vitamin d than matched controls.

Serum Sclerostin Level & Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency

Endocrine System DiseasesVitamin D Deficiency

The aim of this study is to determine serum sclerostin levels and change in serum sclerostin levels in patients with Vitamin D deficiency treated with calcium and vitamin D. Healthy premenopausal Patients with Vitamin D deficiency diagnosed and routinely treated with calcium and vitamin D will be included in the study. This is an observational study. The serum sclerostin levels will be measured before and after Vitamin D treatment.
