Evaluation of the Effect of Two Types of Fluid in the Recovery From Anaesthesia. Voluven 6% v Hartmanns...
Postoperative Nausea and VomitingAvoiding nausea and vomiting is one of the most important for patient comfort and satisfaction, and preventing unplanned overnight stays in hospital following surgery. Studies have shown that increased amounts of intravenous fluid during surgery prevent nausea and vomiting after operations. This effect lasted for up to 48 hours after the surgery. Other unpleasant side effects of dehydration that delay recovery including headaches and dizziness can be prevented with fluid treatment during the operation. It is unclear if this effect happens with all types of fluid. The investigators propose to examine the effect of 2 types of intravenous fluids on recovery from anaesthesia. Each group will be given a different fluid while using our usual anaesthetic technique. The investigators will ask questions about nausea and vomiting after surgery (primary outcomes), and other factors relating to patient comfort such as headache and dizziness (secondary outcomes)
Dose-ranging Study of APD405 in Post-operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV)
Postoperative Nausea and VomitingTo assess the efficacy and safety of different doses of APD405 in the prevention of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in adult patients at moderate to high-risk of PONV. Patients must be undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia (hysterectomy (any surgical technique), cholecystectomy (any surgical technique) or "other" elective surgery scheduled to last at least one hour from induction of anaesthesia), requiring at least one overnight stay in hospital, and have at least 2 of the following risk factors for PONV: Past history of PONV and/or motion sickness; Non-smoking status; Female gender; Planned opiate use for post-operative analgesia.

NeoplasmsNausea1 moreThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of single IV doses of Onicit® (Palonosetron) 0.25 mg in the prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with moderate and highly emetogenic chemotherapy.
Implementation Study of the PostOperative Nausea and Vomiting Prediction Rule
Postoperative Nausea and VomitingThis study evaluates whether the implementation of a prediction rule for postoperative nausea and vomiting changes physician behaviour, improves patient outcome and improves cost-effectiveness of treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting.
Pre-emptive Treatment of Severe Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy
Hyperemesis GravidarumPregnancyThe purpose of this study is to determine whether pre-emptive use of a delayed release combination of pyridoxine hydrochloride and doxylamine succinate (Diclectin®), before eruption of symptoms of Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum, will reduce the incidence of severe forms of this syndrome/HG.
Serum Levels of Doxycycline at the Time of Abortion With Two Dosing Regimens
AbortionInduced1 moreThis is a randomized double-blind, controlled trial comparing two regimens of pre-abortion doxycycline. The aims of the study are to determine the serum levels of doxycycline when administered pre-operatively 4 hours or approximately 18 hours before a dilation and evacuation (D & E) abortion. The hypotheses being tested are that subjects who receive doxycycline with food the night before an abortion will have adequate serum levels, but less nausea and vomiting compared to women who take the doxycycline on an empty stomach on the morning of the abortion. Subjects will either take 200mg doxycycline on the night before and 2 caps placebo with a sip of water on the morning of surgery or 2 caps placebo the night before and 200mg doxycycline on the morning of surgery with a sip of water. All capsules will look identical. Diaries, questionnaires and a 10cc sample of blood for doxycycline levels will be collected from the subjects at the time of surgery.
