Reducing Suicide Risk Associated With Weight Loss

Eating BehaviorSelf Harm1 more

The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of an intervention aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and reducing risk factors associated with eating pathology, nonsuicidal self-injury, and suicidal behavior. We are also interested in assessing whether this intervention has the potential to prevent future symptoms of eating problems and self-harm urges and behaviors. The broader goal of this research is to identify factors that may help us better understand the prevention of self-harm behaviors and develop more effective treatments for these problems.

Adaptation of a Digital Weight Loss Intervention Promoting Self-regulation for Use in Type 2 Diabetes...

Diabetes MellitusType 21 more

The purpose of this study is to 1) adapt a weight loss app that the Tate team has previously developed to promote PA and diet and adapt them to the needs and perspectives of those with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM), integrate daily monitoring of BG using continuous monitoring (CGM) and self-monitoring of diet using the simplified system, and develop appropriate displays of data to facilitate comprehension and decision making, 2) develop the modified intervention and, 3) conduct a pilot and feasibility study on short-term impacts of the intervention in overweight adult patients with T2DM not treated with medications in preparation for an R01 submission.

Mother and Child Health Outcomes After Maternal Bariatric Surgery

Weight Loss

Childhood obesity has been a growing problem with more than 30% of children between 6 and 19 years old being considered overweight or obese. Obese children are at increased risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and are susceptible to the sociological effects of being overweight. Obesity is a multifactorial disease, is often familial and multi-generational, and studies have shown that parental obesity can increase the risk of a child becoming obese. Currently, one of the most successful treatment options for obesity is bariatric surgery. The Nebraska Medicine Bariatric Center offers patients counseling in improved dietary management, methods to increase physical activity, and psychological support. As part of the programs standard-of-care, each bariatric surgical patient receives consultation with a dietician, psychologist, and an exercise physiologist. We propose that mothers who are enrolled in the surgical weight loss program bring their children to attend the presurgical specialist consultation. Subjects enrolled in the study will have their height, weight, and physical activity assessed at preoperative and postoperative study visits. Study subjects will also complete questionnaires of their self-reported physical activity and eating habits at these study visits. The goal of this pilot study is to examine whether this behavioral intervention will have an impact on the overall health and weight of children whose mothers have received bariatric surgery.

Daily Weight Feedback for Wheelchair Users to Promote Weight Loss

Overweight and ObesityDepression

The goals of the proposed study are to test the usability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the E-Scale with wheelchair users. The E-scale was developed as a weight monitoring technology for wheelchair users. Up to fifteen overweight or obese wheelchair users will be enrolled in a 13 week study that includes standard behavioral treatment (SBT) for weight loss, which focuses on diet, physical activity, and behavioral strategies (e.g., goal setting, self-monitoring) to support lifestyle changes specifically for people with mobility impairments. The subjects will also be provided the E-scale to track their weight daily. The outcome measure include usefulness (subjective feedback from a survey about the program/E-scale), feasibility (accuracy and repeatable measurements from the E-scale) and efficacy (improvements in weight and other measures of health) of the weight loss program coupled with the E-scale at the end of 13 weeks. The primary hypothesis is that the E-scale coupled with the weight loss intervention will result in significant improvements in weight, abdominal girth, body fat percentage, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D).The results may inform the refinement of this technology to increase its applicability for wheelchair users to independently monitor their weight in their own homes while attempting to lose weight.

Effects of Self-conditioning Techniques in Promoting Weight Loss in Patients With Obesity. A Randomized...

Obesity

The investigators hypothesized that hypnosis is an alternative technique that could be applied to help patients with obesity to lose weight. The possibility that a self-conditioning technique (self-hypnosis) added to traditional approach (diet, exercise and behavioral recommendations) will be effective in determining weight loss with respect to the traditional approach in subjects with a body mass index (BMI) between 35 and 50 kg/m2 will be studied.
