Treatment for Chronic Depression

Major Depressive Disorder

The purpose of this study is to test the clinical efficacy of two psychotherapies for early onset chronic major depression, including Behavioral Activation (Jacobson et al., 2001), and an integrated version of Behavioral Activation and Stress Innoculation Coping (BASIC) for short-term (16 weeks) of individual psychotherapy for adults with chronic major depression. The control condition is an individual workbook condition of Behavioral Activation. These psychotherapies focus on behavior activation, stress reduction and coping strategies to counter depressive symptoms.

The study is designed as a double-blind, randomised placebo controlled study with two groups of active treatment (escitalopram in two doses, 5 or 10 mg daily) in a twelve week period.

The Health and Social Consequences of Depression Among the Elderly

Depression

Mental illnesses often go undiagnosed or untreated in low-income settings. Mental health care may be especially important for the elderly - events in the lives of the elderly, like illnesses or deaths of peers, may put these individuals at high risk of mental illness. The study will constitute a randomized controlled trial aimed at reducing depression among elderly women. Through two interventions, the investigators will aim to improve women elder's outlook on life and relationships through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and facilitated group activities. There will be a total of three treatment arms: one for CBT during home visits, one for CBT and facilitated group activities, and a control group receiving neither the CBT nor facilitated group activities. Randomization will be at the hamlet/block level. A control group will receive no intervention. Investigators will track outcomes of the elderly at 3 months, 1 year, and 3 years after the intervention.

MOMS Hubs- CT Dept of Social Services Block Grant

Depression

The MOMS Partnership aims to create "MOMS Zones" in New Haven neighborhoods where the hardest to reach families live. These "MOMS Zones" will have two unique features: (1) a MOMS "Hub" to deliver centralized mental health and family economic success services to the hardest to reach families living in New Haven's most impoverished neighborhoods, as measured by actual socio-economic status as well as by access to resources; (2) a neighborhood workforce of Community Mental Health Ambassadors (CMHAs--mothers who themselves live in New Haven). The MOMS Workforce Program and MOMS Mental Health Program will be offered at all three Hubs.

Riluzole Augmentation Pilot in Depression (RAPID) Trial

Major Depressive Disorder

The investigators are doing a research study to find out if riluzole, when taken along with a standard antidepressant (sertraline) can help people with major depression. This research study will compare riluzole + sertraline to placebo + sertraline. The investigators hypothesize that adding riluzole will lead to a better antidepressant response, in less time, then sertraline alone.
