Automated Quantification of Coronary Artery Calcifications on Radiotherapy Planning CTs for Cardiovascular...

Breast CancerCardiovascular Diseases

The aim of the BRAGATSTON study is to provide a low cost tool for measuring CAC in breast cancer patients, thereby identifying patients at increased risk of CVD. Breast cancer patients and doctors can act upon this, by adapting the treatment and/or by adopting cardioprotective interventions. Hereby, the burden of CVD in breast cancer survivors can be reduced and better overall survival rates can be achieved.

mtDNA and Embryo Metabolism

Embryo Metabolic Activity

The present study has the objective to study whether the mitochondrial DNA copy number values that can be generated when human embryos are analyzed for chromosomal content before embryo transfer correlates with the actual number of mitochondria as well as their energy requirements of the human embryo.

The RBANS-H in Older Adults With Normal Hearing or Age-related Hearing Loss

Normal Hearing

The present cross-sectional study aims to examine the cognitive capabilities of older adults, aged 50 to 89, with normal hearing or age-related hearing loss by means of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status for Hearing impaired individuals (RBANS-H). Secondly, the correlations between cognition on the one hand and hearing and speech reception capabilities on the other hand are investigated. For this purpose, twenty participants are included in the age categories 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79 and 80 to 89, bringing the total number to 80. Three questionnaires are administered to the participants: the Health Utilities Index-2/3 (HUI 2/3), Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and a general questionnaire on education and profession, medical history, hearing aid use and tinnitus. Also an audiological examination is performed, including pure tone audiometry, speech in quiet and speech in noise audiometry. Finally, cognition is assessed using the RBANS-H.

Childhood Acute Illness and Nutrition Network

MalnutritionPneumonia7 more

The CHAIN Network aims to identify modifiable biomedical and social factors driving the greatly increased risk of mortality among young undernourished children admitted to hospital with acute illness, as inpatients and after discharge. The study will inform priorities, risks and targeting for multi-faceted interventional trials. CHAIN is a multi-centre cohort study with a nested case control analysis of stored biological samples. Study sites are located in Africa and South Asia. Children will be recruited at admission to hospital, stratified by nutritional status. Exposures will be assessed at admission, during hospitalisation, at discharge, and at two time points after discharge. The main outcomes of interest are mortality, re-admission to hospital and failure of nutritional recovery up to 180 days after discharge. To determine community health norms, an additional sample of children living in the same communities will be enrolled and assessed at one time point only.

Impact of the Lack of CMV-Specific CD8+ T Cell Response in CMV-Seropositive Donors in CMV Reactivation...

Cytomegalovirus InfectionHSCT

Donor and recipient CMV-serostatus is one of the risk factor for CMV infection in solid organ transplantation. Recipients with IgG positive anti-CMV are classified as low-risk patients since it is considered that patients also have specific cellular immunity against CMV. However, investigators group has published that around 25% of solid organ transplant candidates lack CMV-specific CD8+ T-cell response ("humoral/cellular mismatch") and they are at a higher risk of CMV replication after transplantation. The main goal of this study is to analyze the impact of the humoral/cellular mismatch in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) CMV-seropositive donors on the CMV reactivation after HSCT in CMVseropositive recipients. Investigators will study not only the incidence of CMV reactivation but also the severity (duration and peak viral load), CMV disease and survival. CMV-seropositive patients who receive a HSCT (bone marrow or peripheral blood) from related donors will be consecutively recruited from Reina Sofía Hospital (Córdoba) and Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital (Santander). Patients will be monitored during 12 months after HSCT. CMV-specific CD8+ T-cell response will be determined in their donors, using QuantiFERON-CMV assay, to know the frequency of humoral/cellular mismatch. Innate and adaptive immune reconstitution will be assessed by flow cytometry and experimental QuantiFERON Monitor assay. CMV-specific CD8+ T-cell reconstitution will be determined using QuantiFERON-CMV assay.

Hypothyroidism in Patients With Type 1 Diabetes

Hypothyroidism

Therefore, for early detection of hypothyroidism in children with type 1 diabetes, it is suggested to measure anti-thyroid antibodies and thyroid stimulating hormone at disease onset and in yearly intervals after the age of 12 yr. Furthermore, the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Consensus Clinical Guidelines recommend the screening of thyroid function by analysing circulating thyroid stimulating hormone at the diagnosis of diabetes and, thereafter every 2nd yr. in asymptomatic individuals without goitre and more frequent if goitre present .

ECG Changes in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes

Diabetes MellitusType 1

Diabetes Mellitus type 1 is characterized by an absolute insulin deficiency caused by T-cell-mediated autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells . It is the predominant form of diabetes mellitus during childhood and adolescence. Hyperglycemia is a major cause of vascular and neuropathic complications that are seen in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1.

Epigenetic Integrity of Spermatozoa in Patients With Germinal Testicular Tumours

Seminomas

Recent data suggest that sperm cells carry an epigenetic message during spermatogenesis and that this message is crucial for the future development of the embryo. This epigenetic signature is notably represented by methylation of genes subjected to imprinting (GSI) and the methylation of transposable elements (TE). Data on the maintenance of the imprint and of the control of TE accompanying human gametogenesis in a context of adult germinal testicular cancers, seminomas, are extremely fragmentary for tumour tissues and inexistent for gametes. The aim of this study is to determine whether patients with seminomas in comparison with fertile men carry a higher risk of presenting epigenetic alterations affecting their gametes. This study is based on the use of an existing collection of biological samples. 90 samples will be selected and split into 3 groups: Group 1: 30 sperm samples from patients with seminomatous testicular tumours Group 2: 30 sperm samples from fertile patients Group 3: 30 sperm samples from infertile patients After treatment of the samples (thawing, cell sorting and removal of cryoprotectants), they will be analysed.
