Covid19SARS-CoV Infection

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is currently a global public health problem, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, which today has more than one million deaths in the world, of which , 30,000 approximately belong to Colombia, being the country number 11 with the highest number of deaths. The most common symptoms related to this disease are fever, cough, dyspnea, myalgia, headache, diarrhea and rhinorrhea. COVID-19 is characterized by immune system dysfunction and hyperinflammation causing acute respiratory distress syndrome, macrophage activation, and coagulopathy. The clinical course for SARS-CoV-2 in most cases is mild, but approximately 14% of cases can be severe. In pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2, the lung lining is known to alter the composition of the lung microbiome, in addition to lymphocyte damage that can promote the growth of bacteria to initiate bacterial pneumonia, and it is estimated that the prevalence of coinfection / superinfection reaches 50% among deaths from COVID-19. Coinfection between different microorganisms and SARS-CoV-2 is a serious problem in the COVID-19 pandemic, and there is still little information on this. It is for this reason that the researchs propose to develop this research project that will allow to understand the possible mechanisms associated with the development of bacterial coinfection / superinfection in patients diagnosed with COVID-19, which will allow expanding the panorama of knowledge towards a better and adequate treatment in these patients, as well as detection of biomarkers or clinical phenotypics that may be useful in the diagnosis, based on evidence. It is important to note that these results are of clinical importance since we will try to identify biomarkers or changes in the lung microbiome that allow doctors to early identify patients at risk of developing coinfection and thus initiate early treatments or preventive measures, which allow the improvement of clinical outcomes in patients. Results will be presented in a timely manner at national and international conferences and in peer-reviewed, indexed, high-impact journals.

Association Between Cancer and Anti-synthetase Syndrome

Antisynthetase Syndrome

Among Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, antisynthetase syndrome is meant to be rarely associated with cancer. However, clinical evidences of the association of those diseases led to the hypothesis that previous studies might have underestimated the prevalence of cancer in patients with antisynthetase syndrome. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of cancer in patients with antisynthetases syndrome in Grand Est and Bourgogne Franche-Comté regions.

Erectile Dysfunction, Psychological Disorders, and Sexual Performance Among Men Seeking Medical...

Erectile DysfunctionSexual Dysfunction4 more

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS), sexual health is directly related to everyone's mental health and quality of life. Sexuality is innate to humans and is closely linked to their reproduction. Thus, a correlation between unmet fertility desires and sexual disorders can be observed in infertile couples. In fact, sexual intercourse itself will not be as natural in most cases and will preferentially occur during the "reproductive window". Thus, sexuality will be deprived of recreational and erotic activities, and sexuality will be used only for reproduction. For many men, sexual intercourse will become coercive, repetitive and mechanical, offering little emotion. The interactions between infertility and wife recurrent miscarriage in sexuality are numerous and complex. Many men will perceive their infertility as a loss of masculinity and virility and may feel low self-esteem and depression, in addition, Decreased sperm quality may lead to anxiety in men, which may eventually lead to temporary Sexual Dysfunction (SD).Therefore, the need to identify SD and its severity is crucial for infertile men before receiving individualized male treatment.

COVID-19 Prevalence in UNIVI Geriatric Institutions: Epidemiological Study of Immunological Status...

COVID-19

To date, little information is available on the prevalence of Covid-19 and data are lacking on the proportion of patients, institutional residents and caregivers who have actually been exposed to SARS Cov-2. With the NG Biotech rapid serological test, an individual's immunological status (presence of IgM and IgG antibodies) can be determined in 15 minutes on a finger-prick blood sample. The proposed trial will be a noninterventional study of immunological status among the residents and caregivers of 26 nursing homes and 4 geriatric healthcare institutions belonging to the UNIVI Group who are representative of the institutional geriatric population in France. The NG Biotech rapid test will be carried out concomitantly with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests performed within the framework of a national screening campaign. Data on risk factors in staff members and on specific COVID 19 symptoms in residents will also be collected. The study will terminate for residents and caregivers whose tests are both negative (absence of infection and no exposure to the virus). For residents and caregivers who have at least one positive test, follow-up visits will be scheduled in order to study the serology time course and the occurrence of reinfection (follow-up questionnaire).

Learning MRI and Histology Image Mappings for Cancer Diagnosis and Prognosis.

Prostate CancerProstate Neoplasm

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is now widely used to risk stratify men with a suspicion of prostate cancer and identify suspicious regions for biopsy. Advanced MRI techniques have emerged which seek to improve this characterisation and could predict biopsy results non-invasively before men undergo biopsy. Before these techniques are translated clinically, robust histological and clinical validation is required. This study aims to clinically validate advanced MRI techniques in a cohort of men suspected with prostate cancer. Histological analysis of men undergoing biopsy, +/- prostatectomy will be used for biological validation of VERDICT; Vascular and Extracellular Restricted Diffusion for Cytometry in Tumours and Luminal Water imaging (LWI). In particular, prostatectomy specimens will be processed using 3-D printed patient-specific moulds to allow for accurate MRI and histology mapping.

Evaluation of ESMO Guidelines Applicability and Adherence in Cancer Pain Management in the Palliative...

Cancer PainPain1 more

Palliative care (PC) is focused on improving the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients living with a life-threatening illness. Each year, an estimated 40 million people need PC management in the world. In the European Union, it is estimated that about 4,5 million of people are in the need of PC every year, with about 40% affected by malignant neoplasia. Data from a recent systematic review of the literature report that the prevalence of pain is 66% (95% confidence interval 58-75) in cancer patients with advanced stages of the disease. In 52% of cases, pain was moderate or severe in intensity (NRS, Numeric Rating Scale ≥4). Furthermore, in addition to the basic pain, having characteristics of continuity over time even in the presence of fluctuations in intensity, the presence of acute painful episodes must also be considered, which are defined with the term of Breakthrough Cancer Pain, (BTcP), whose prevalence is estimated between 21 and 59%. The positive impact on the quality of life of cancer patients of adhering to current guidelines has been amply demonstrated. Recently, new guidelines or recommendations produced by scientific societies have published, including the European Association of Palliative Care, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). In clinical facilities directly involved in the treatment of pain in cancer patients, implementing the directives set out in the guidelines appears to be a correct objective for the appropriateness of treatments. Nevertheless, there are no studies in Europe that have evaluated the applicability and adherence to guidelines in the treatment of cancer pain in advanced cancer patients. The present study intends to collect detailed information on the characteristics of pain and the treatment in a population of cancer patients cared by a network of specialized palliative care centers in order to assess the applicability and adherence of the latest European guidelines published by ESMO in 2018 for the treatment of pain in the specific area.
