Obstructive Apnea in Patients Submitted to Partial Laryngectomy

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

The investigators intend to study the prevalence of obstructive apnea in patients submitted to partial laryngectomy by larynx cancer. Volunteers will be evaluated using polissonografy. We will try to correlate the residual glotic area with the number of apneas per hour.

Evaluation of Oral Needs of Children With Disorder Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

There is little accurate data in the literature at present on oral problems of hyperactive children, especially regarding care needs that would justify an assumption oral specific. The purpose of this study is therefore to have accurate data regarding the risk of caries, other oral diseases like periodontal disease, trauma, and assess the needs dental care and problems in cooperation for dental care in a population of children and adolescents with hyperactivity disorder with attention deficit. Finally, it has recently been described as the sleep disordered breathing was not uncommon in disorder attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whether snoring and/or apnea. But it is now accepted that some features of facial morphology favoring pharyngeal congestion occur in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (hyperdivergent typology with increased anterior facial height and decreased posterior facial height, becoming the facial retrognathia, pharyngeal congestion, elongation and thickening of the soft palate, low position of the hyoid bone). A cephalometric analysis of craniofacial architecture and relationships with the soft tissue surrounding skeletal structures will detect if any of these specific characteristics that could promote sleep disordered breathing are found in disorder attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder prevalence with a particular.

The investigators propose a third hypothesis based on the anatomic observations made in pathological studies. The investigators hypothesize that the anatomic architecture determines the functional properties of the TV-IVC isthmus. As a result, • Muscular bundles are preferential routes of conduction through the TV-IVC isthmus. The isthmus acts like a series of discreet conduction routes rather than as a sheet of tissue. The muscular bundles form selective targets for ablation and therefore the entire anatomic line need not be ablated. This has direct implications for ablation of the isthmus.

Patients With Acute Myeloid LeukemiaPatients Receiving Induction/Consolidation Chemotherapy

The main component in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is consist of anthracycline (such as daunorubicin or idarubicin) and cytarabine. Inter-individual variability of transport/metabolism of the chemotherapeutic agent and several genetic pathways involved in the drug action might be associated with different response following the treatment for AML usually consisted of chemotherapy and/or transplantation. One of potential pathways involved in the drug action is DNA repair pathway, accordingly single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the DNA repair machinery pathway might be a predictive marker for therapy outcomes in AML. Several genes were involved in the DNA repair machinery which are 1) Nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway involved in the G1/S phase, 2) Homologous recombinational repair (HRR) pathway involved in the S/G2 phase. XRCC4, LIG4, MRN and ATM are well known genes involved in the NHEJ pathway, while MRE11, RAD50, NBS1 (MRN), RAD51, XRCC2, XRCC3, RAD51B, RAD51C, RAD 51D, RAD52 or RAD54 are known to be associated with HRR pathway. A study suggested that the SNPs in the DNA repair pathway was involved in the susceptibility of secondary AML developing after chemotherapy or autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, thus these SNP markers could become a predictive marker for secondary AML. However, it has never been investigated for multiple candidate pathways simultaneously with relateively larger number of patients. Accordingly, the current study attempts to investigate the potential role of the genotype markers in multiple candidate pathways, esp. focused on the DNA repair machinery, with respect to response following chemotherapy or survival of AML patients. Total of over 500 archived samples from the patients diagnosed as acute myeloid leukemia at the Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea will be included, and genomic DNAs will be extracted and will be examined for their genotypes of the candidate SNPs involved in the DNA repair pathways. Then statistical analysis will be pursued for single marker analysis, haplotype analysis and for the construction of genetic risk model based on the multivariate analysis.

Prevention of Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) in Rural High-endemic South Africa

Uro-genital Schistosomiasis

Schistosomiasis is a poverty-related water-transmitted parasitic disease affecting more that 200 million people world wide. Infection with Schistosoma haematobium may cause Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) with pathological lesions in the female genital tract, especially the cervix. Findings indicate that FGS is a hitherto under-diagnosed illness of young women in endemic poor tropical countries, deserving further attention. A cross-sectional study from Zimbabwe indicated that the pathologic genital lesions were unchanged two years after praziquantel treatment in adult women whereas in those who had been treated with praziquantel in childhood the prevalence of genital lesions was significantly lower. Furthermore, a higher prevalence of HIV was detected in women with FGS compared to those without. The proposed project aims at achieving a better understanding of how annual distribution of praziquantel to pre- and post-pubertal schoolgirls may prevent FGS. This information can be of use in current schistosomiasis control programs in the near term resulting in improved strategies for treatment. Preventing or reducing the risk of FGS and genital lesions will lead to improved reproductive health among in women living in schistosomiasis endemic areas. Project Goal: Contribute to a reduction of the global burden of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) through improved knowledge about the prevention of gynecological lesions and through improved diagnosis of FGS.
