Acute Pulmonary Insufficiency Following Thoracic SurgeryVentilator-associated Lung InjuryAcute lung injury (ALI) following thoracic surgery remains a major source of morbidity and mortality after lung resection. One-lung ventilation (OLV) is usually required in thoracic surgery. OLV is also an important predictor of postoperative ALI. Recent laboratory findings suggested that tissue hypoxemia and ischemia / reperfusion injury of the collapsed lungs during OLV is the major cause of lung injury. Exhaled Breath Condensate (EBC), which is the exhalate from breath typically collected by cooling device, contains most molecules found in the airway. Metabolomics refers to systematic and scientific study of chemical processes involving metabolites. This study will collect EBC for metabolomic analysis and aim to elucidate the biochemical reactions during one-lung ventilation and pathological mechanisms of acute lung injury following thoracic surgery.

Arterial OcclusionArterial SpasmRadial artery access is increasingly becoming popular among interventional cardiologists for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI)/ diagnostic angiography secondary to its low complications rates. However, it is frequently associated with the spasm of the radial artery which can lead to difficulty in catheter manipulation during the procedure and potentially leading to vessel trauma. This vessel trauma can cause activation of coagulation system and formation of clot and subsequently the occlusion of radial artery. In this study the investigators intend to find the association of radial artery spasm with the future development of radial artery occlusion in patients who undergo PCI via radial access.

International Registry for Ambulatory Blood Pressure and Arterial Stiffness Telemonitoring
HypertensionThis Registry is an investigator-initiated, international, multicenter, observational, prospective study aiming at: i) evaluating non-invasive 24-h ambulatory blood pressure and arterial stiffness estimates (through 24-h pulse wave analysis) in hypertensive subjects; ii) assessing the changes in estimates following treatment; iii) weighing the impact of 24-h pulse wave analysis on target organ damage and cardiovascular prognosis; iv) assessing the relationship between arterial stiffness, blood pressure absolute level and variability, and prognosis. Approximately 2000 subjects, referred to 20 hypertension clinics for routine diagnostic evaluation and follow-up of hypertension, will be recruited. Data collection will include ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, performed with a device allowing simultaneous non-invasive assessment of blood pressure and arterial stiffness, and clinical data (including cardiovascular outcomes). A web-based telemedicine platform will be used for data collection. Subjects will visit the centers at 6-12 month intervals. First follow-up results are expected to be available in the next 2-years. The results of the Registry will help defining the normalcy thresholds for current and future indices derived from 24-h pulse wave velocity, according to outcome data. They will also provide supporting evidence for the inclusion of such evaluation in recommendations on hypertension management.

Cigarette SmokingAlcohol DrinkingAdolescent substance abuse (SA), which includes the consumption of alcohol, cigarette smoking, the consumption of drugs and other behaviors, is a significant public-health issue in the world today. Recent data showed that prevalence of SA among adolescents in Croatia and surrounding countries (i.e. former Yugoslav republics) is alarming and needs serious intervention. It is hypothesized that participation in physical-exercise-and-sport (PE&S) will reduce the tendency of young people to abuse substances. However, the literature to date has not consistently validated the perception PE&S factors are factors which could buffer SA among children and adolescents. One of the probable reasons for evident inconsistencies on findings about relationship between PE&S and SA is a cross-sectional nature of studies done so far. Therefore, the main rationale (i.e. problem) of this study is lack of current knowledge about influence of the PE&S on SA among adolescents. The main objective of this study is to prospectively investigate the influence of PE&S on SA among adolescents aged 17 to 18 years old. Aims of the project are: (1) to define prevalence and trends of SA among adolescents aged 17 to 18 years old; (2) to define prevalence and trends of PE&S participation; (3) to establish interrelationships which exist between socio-demographic, psychological, educational-factors, and PE&S (predictors); (4) to identify multivariate and univariate associations between: socio-demographic and SA, psychological factors and SA, PE&S and SA, educational - scholastic factors and SA.Expected results of the project are: (1) definition of the prevalence of SA among adolescents; (2) definition of the adolescents' participation in PE&S; (3) identification and interpretation relationships which exist between and within studied predictors of SA (educational factors, socio-demographic factors, PE&S, psychological factors); (4) identification of the influence of studied predictors on SA.
