Dual PET/CT Imaging in Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

The purpose of this study is to compare conventional PET/CT scan performed 1 hour after injection of the radioactive tracer FDG (PET/CT[1]) with PET/CT performed after 3 hours (PET/CT[3]) in a group of patients with biopsy verified lung cancer or high suspicion of lung cancer after initial work-up (chest x-ray and CT of thorax/upper abdomen), who are potentially operable.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute Head and Neck...

Head and Neck Squamous Cell CarcinomaHuman Papillomavirus

This study is designed to refine the aetiological causes of cancers of the head and neck and investigate the ways in which human papillomavirus and life-style factors cause head and neck cancers. This study will determine if these factors affect the treatment of cancer. All patients attending the Head and Neck Clinic at the Princess Alexandra Hospital is invited to complete a risk factor questionnaire and give consent for their clinical data and tissue samples to be available for future research activities. The risk factor questionnaire is based on existing validated instruments developed by the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute Cancer Control Group, and will collect standardised information relating to demographics and causal factors (tobacco and alcohol intake), risk modifiers (dentition, asprin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), height, weight, physical activity, diet quality etc) and behaviours (oral sex etc)

Nutrition and Lifestyle Study Cohort of Gastric Cancer in China

Gastric Cancer

China has the largest gastric cancer patients population all over the world. Recent reports concluded nutrition status and lifestyle factors were associated with gastric cancer risk, however, the influence of nutrition and lifestyle factors on cancer outcome in gastric cancer survivors is largely unknown. The investigators will explore the impact of nutrition status, life style, dietary pattern, obesity, physical activity, depression, diabetes, aspirin use and vitamin supplement on gastric cancer outcome. The investigators will recruit approximately 50,000 patients as a prospective study cohort. During follow up, the investigators will explore the association of these factors with disease-specific survival, disease-free survival and overall survival of patients. The investigators believe that this project will facilitate the establishment of domestic nutrition and lifestyle data of gastric cancer of China, and the improvement of the quality of clinical management of patients with gastric cancer.

Expression of Optic Atrophy Type 1 (OPA1) Protein in Lung Adenocarcinoma

Lung Adenocarcinoma

Optic atrophy type 1(OPA1) is a nuclear dynamin-related GTPase, targeted to the inner mitochondrial membrane, which plays a role in mitochondrial fusion. Mitochondria fusion is associated with process of apoptosis. . OPA1 plays an important role in the mitochondrial bioenergetics and mitochondrial networks. The changes in mitochondrial shape and mitochondrial bioenergetics may be cause of the disease. In this study, we investigate the expression of OPA1 in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) cells and tissue.

Expression of AMP-activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) Protein in Lung Adenocarcinoma

Lung Adenocarcinoma

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an evolutionally conserved protein kinase that serves as an energy guardian to help cells adapt to various metabolic stress including hypoxia. Because the role of AMPK in cancers has not been fully elucidated, in this study we investigated the expression and activation of AMPK in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) cells and tissue.

Standardization of D2 Lymphadenectomy and Surgical Quality Control: KLASS-02-QC

Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in Korea. Having achieved excellent long-term survival for early gastric cancer patients, there is a growing interest in improving the quality of life of these patients without compromising their prognosis. Laparoscopic surgery for early gastric cancer have been found to be safe and feasible with superior short-term outcomes. Although laparoscopic gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy is being performed for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer; the completeness of the D2 lymphadenectomy during laparoscopic surgery has not been evaluate and no standardized procedure exists. To conduct a clinical trial comparing laparoscopic D2 lymphadenectomy to the open approach, quality control of D2 lymphadenectomy procedure is necessary.
