Animal Assisted Activities on the Stress and Social Anxiety

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the effects of animal-assisted activities on the stress and social anxiety levels of physically disabled children. Method: The research was carried out in two separate Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers providing education under the Antalya Provincial Directorate of National Education. The data of the study were obtained between November 2019-September 2020. The study is a single blind randomized controlled study designed in a pretest, posttest and follow-up design. The study was carried out in two different institutions to prevent contamination. Institutions are determined by an independent lottery method. The sample of the study consisted of 44 physically disabled children between the ages of 8-11, as the intervention group (n: 21) and the control group (n: 23). A 45-60 minute structured animal supported activity program (HayDAP) was applied to the intervention group, once a week for 7 weeks. Interviews were conducted individually. The data of the study were obtained using Personal Information Form (KBF), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Social Anxiety Scale for Children. Follow-up evaluation was made at the end of the 1st month following the completion of the application. There was no intervention in the control group. The data were analyzed using the Pearson Ki-Square Test in SPSS 23.0 package program, Fisher's Exact Test if large, Shapiro-Wilks Test, Box M, Bonferroni and mixed pattern ANOVA tests. A 95% significance level (or α = 0.05 margin of error) was used to determine the differences in the analyzes.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Fear Extinction

Anxiety Disorders

Psychiatric disorders characterized by pathological fear and anxiety are common and often disabling. Despite their limitations, exposure therapies are among the most efficacious treatments for these disorders. Extinction learning is thought to be a core mechanism of therapeutic exposure. Extinction learning is mediated by a well-defined circuit encompassing the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), amygdala, and hippocampus. This raises the exciting possibility that direct engagement of this circuitry might enhance the response to therapeutic exposure. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation technology that can augment brain plasticity, learning, and memory. The proposed study will evaluate whether tDCS can engage extinction circuitry, and improve extinction learning and memory. This study will enroll psychiatrically healthy volunteers to test whether tDCS applied to the mPFC can augment spontaneous mPFC activity, engagement of extinction circuitry during extinction learning and recall, and classically-conditioned extinction learning and memory. Healthy volunteers will complete a standardized, three-day fear conditioning and extinction learning and memory task. On day 1, participants will complete a fear conditioning task. On day 2, participants will receive sham (placebo) or active tDCS prior to completing a fear extinction learning task. On day 3, participants will complete an extinction recall task. Electrodermal activity and heart rate will be continuously monitored during the conditioning and extinction procedures to assess autonomic arousal. All procedures will be completed in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner; imaging data will be collected before and after tDCS and during all conditioning and extinction procedures.

Virtual Reality System for Anxiety and OCD

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with fear provoking exposures is the most effective therapy for anxiety disorders. The investigators aim to enhance this therapy with the use of virtual reality exposures. The human subjects study will test the effects of using VR for exposures compared to traditional imaginal exposures on anxiety symptom improvement, functioning, child engagement in an response to exposures, completion of exposure homework between treatment sessions, and length of treatment in weeks and length of treatment among children with anxiety disorders and/or obsessive compulsive disorder. The funding award supports the development of the technology and the human subjects study. The subcontract to Mayo supports expert input to identify clinically relevant content for therapeutic videos on the VR system and the human subjects study to test the VR system.
