ObesityMetabolic DiseaseThe purpose of this study is to conduct a three-arm 52-week, randomized controlled trial with double blind treatment to evaluate the effects of a drug called tirzepatide in combination with an innovative, culturally-appropriate, intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) delivered by community health workers (CHWs) in Latino adults with obesity. Participants will be randomized to 1) standard care (SC, n=25); 2) culturally-tailored dietary and behavioral intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI, n=25) provided by CHWs plus placebo; or 3) ILI plus tirzepatide (ILI-TRZ) for 52 weeks to evaluate the intervention's effect on: i) weight loss; ii) clinical efficacy (change in body fat mass, liver fat, intra-abdominal fat mass and intrahepatic triglyceride content, oral glucose tolerance, glycemic control, insulin sensitivity and b-cell function, plasma lipids, blood pressure, sleep duration, quality and behaviors, physical performance scores); iii) adherence and fidelity to the intervention (adherence to the intervention and barriers to long term adherence, quality-of-life, fidelity of the implementation by CHWs, CHW's and study participants' acceptability and satisfaction with the intervention and eating behaviors. Placebo or tirzepatide will be injected subcutaneously in the abdomen or thigh once a week for 12 months.

ObesityDepression2 moreThe aim of this study is find out how CBT-based weight loss program affects on eating behavior, weight loss, mood symptoms and risk for coronary heart diseases and type 2 diabetes and applicability of the program to obesity treatment among patients with comorbid depression. Our hypothesis is that the CBT-based intervention improves long-term weight management results and supports positively the change in eating behavior and the risk for CHD on type 2 DM. The study is randomized controlled one-year intervention study with 1 year follow-up. Study subjects are adult obese (BMI>35) subjects with comorbid depression. Number of randomized study subjects will be 80, 40 in intervention group, 40 in control group. Intervention group will proceed through a 52-week CBT-based weight loss group intervention. The aim of the intervention is to modify eating behavior and lifestyle factors affecting weight and weight maintenance. There will be 22 group counselling of 90 minutes divided in five modules and also three individual person-centered counselling visit, during which participants had an opportunity to discuss their personal concerns about diet and weight loss plan. Control group will receive the usual care of obesity in Kuopio University hospital. (4-8 individual 45-minute visit conducted by dieticians) Study visits are at baseline and one and 2 years after baseline. For example eating behavior, health behavior, motivation and depression are studied with questionnaires. Weight, waist circumference, height and blood pressure are measured. Laboratory tests (lipid, glucose etc) are taken.

This project will test the effects of a primary care intervention in which people with obesity receive an electronic scale and recommendations to weigh themselves daily. This will help us understand whether daily self-weighing might be a way to prevent continued weight gain.

The study hypothesizes that compared to the traditional and current post-procedural strategy, weighted blanket use will reduce agitation and therefore lessen the need for additional sedation along with a reduction of post-procedure vascular complications.
Engaging Men in Weight Loss With a Game-based mHealth and Neurotraining Program
ObesityWeight LossMen in the United States have an exceptionally high prevalence of overweight and obesity, i.e., 71.3%, and 42% of men are currently attempting weight loss. However, men are dramatically underrepresented in weight loss programs. Attempts to modestly adapt standard weight loss programs have seen only minimal success. Mobile applications (mHealth apps) have attractive features, but have low male enrollment and poor efficacy as conventionally delivered. A gamified mHealth program offers the possibility of engaging men and enhancing efficacy given that (1) video gaming is highly appealing to men; (2) gamification features (e.g., digital rewards for attaining "streaks" and milestones, competition) are known enhance enjoyment and motivation and facilitate desired behaviors; and (3) "neurotraining" video games featuring repetitive action mechanics, adaptive difficulty, and feedback can train inhibitory control, a basic brain capacity to inhibit intrinsically-generated approach responses that is strongly linked to body mass and the consumption of high-calorie foods. This project evaluates long-term engagement and outcomes of a professionally-designed, game-based weight loss program. As such, 228 overweight men will be randomized to: (1) a 12-month mHealth weight loss program that includes digital self-monitoring, simplified and self-selected dietary targets, physical activity and a control (sham) non-game neurotraining, or (2) a fully-gamified version of this same program, comprised of a behavior change program featuring team-based competition, digital reinforcers for attainment of streaks and milestones, and an integrated neurotraining video game. Aims include evaluating the efficacy of the gamified program in terms of weight loss, diet and physical activity at 12 months, as well as evaluating hypothesized mediators (inhibitory control and engagement), (enjoyment and compliance) and moderators (baseline frequency of video game play and implicit preferences for Inhibitory Control Training-targeted foods).
Effect of Coffee and Tea Consumption on Adolescent Weight Control

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of tea and coffee consumption on body weight and body fat in an obese adolescent population. Methods: Randomized clinical trial, parallel group study comparing 3 weight loss interventions comprised of a similar dietary recommendation with either coffee (coffee group), tea (tea group) or placebo (herbal tea). Sociodemographic data and medical history details were retrieved from medical files. The body mass index Z (BMI Z) score and fat percentage as measured by bioelectrical impedance were compared between groups at 3 and 6 months.
Satiating Diet, Appetite Control and Body Weight Loss in Individuals With Obesity
Weight LossWeight Maintenance1 moreThe objective of this study is to evaluate (1) the effect of a non-restrictive satiating intervention on appetite control, body weight loss and maintenance; and (2) determine whether switching to a non-restrictive satiating intervention following a conventional restrictive intervention can prevent increases in appetite and attenuate body weight regain usually observed after weight loss in men and women living with obesity. This is an 18-month, randomized, controlled, parallel weight loss [Phase 1 (P1): 6 months] and maintenance trial [Phase 2 (P2): 12 months] with three groups (n=234 men and women): (1) non-restrictive, satiating intervention (P1) followed by a continuation of this intervention (P2); (2) conventional restrictive intervention (-500 kcal/d) (P1) followed by a non-restrictive satiating intervention (P2); (3) control group that follows minimal healthy guidelines (P1) followed by recommended weight maintenance strategies (P2). All groups will be controlled for physical activity and sleep patterns. The non-restrictive satiating intervention will include guidelines and recipes to prepare highly satiating meals that will be low in energy density and glycemic index and high in protein, polyunsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals (e.g. calcium), and certain constituents of spices (e.g. capsaicin). Measurements at baseline (week 0), after P1 and P2 will include the following primary outcomes: appetite control, weight loss and maintenance; and secondary outcomes: body composition, physiological, psycho and neurobehavioural and health-related variables. Follow-ups will be done by a dietitian every 2 weeks during P1 and once a month during P2.
