Application of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-G) to Family Members Caring for Patients With...

Interpersonal PsychotherapyFamily Caregivers

The goal of this re-measured quasi-experimental study is to evaluate the effect of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-G) intervention given to caregiver family members of people with schizophrenia on caregiver burden, perception of social support and stigma, adherence to treatment in people with schizophrenia they care for, and emotional expression in both caregivers and people with schizophrenia they care for. IPT-G intervention will reduce the level of stigma of caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia. IPT-G intervention will reduce the level of emotional expression of caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia. IPT-G intervention applied to caregivers will increase the level of adherence to treatment of individuals with schizophrenia they care for. IPT-G intervention applied to caregivers will reduce the emotional expression levels of individuals with schizophrenia they care for.

Anticipated Patient and Caregiver Burden

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative neurological disease that causes progressive motor disability and is life threatening within a few years. The severity of the disease, the progressive loss of autonomy that leads to dependence on family and caregivers, and the lack of effective treatment sometimes leads patients to a loss of hope and to dark thoughts. The prevalence of suicidal ideation is high, with more than one third of people with ALS experiencing it. The psychological suffering of patients is often associated with that of their caregivers. The evaluation of the patients' feeling of being a burden has rarely been addressed in previous studies in ALS on the notion of burden. In this work, the investigators wish to evaluate the patient's ideas of death by also taking into account the caregiver's burden and the patient's feeling of being a burden. They wish to better understand this difficult experience by refocusing the study on the patient himself, which has rarely been addressed in studies on ALS and the notion of burden. By working on the caregiver's burden, both from the caregiver's point of view and as perceived by the patient, the investigators hope to find avenues of intervention and define actions that could help patients and their families and improve the quality of life of the patient-caregiver couple.

Rhythmically Entrained Exercise in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

ExerciseGait30 more

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro conduct a single-arm intervention trial to investigate the efficacy of a music-based group exercise program for community-dwelling older adults. Up to forty participants will be recruited to participate in a music-based light-to-moderate intensity group exercise program for 20 weeks (30 - 40 min/day, up to 6 days/week), which is designed for older adults with or without functional limitations to exercise with chairs for the improvement of aerobic capacity, upper and lower body strength, and balance control at a gradually increasing pace. During the exercise sessions, participants will be trained to move in time with music playlists in synchronous tempos. Primary outcomes are cognitive performance, mobility, and health-related quality of life measured before and after the intervention. Secondary outcomes are adherence to the exercise program as a potential mediator of the treatment.

Family Telemental Health Intervention for Veterans With Dementia

Dementia Family Caregiver Burden and Conflict

Dementia impacts Veterans, their families, and other Veterans who serve as caregivers. One of the most stressful aspects of caregiving is the management of behavioral problems (e.g. wandering, agitation, and sleep difficulties), which exacerbate health issues for both caregivers and persons with dementia (PWD). Existing VA caregiver treatments for caregiver stress and behavioral problems are often ineffective. Many caregivers do not realize their interactions with PWD contribute to behavioral problems and thus do not ask for help to improve their interpersonal skills. The aim of this project is to develop an assessment of interpersonal skills deficits and a related treatment strategy to assist family caregivers of PWD who are challenged by a lack of interpersonal skills and are not helped by existing family caregiver treatments. This project, will develop and test (1) a video assessment of caregiver/PWD interaction that clinicians will use to identify interpersonal difficulties and (2) a family therapy for the interpersonal difficulties clinicians identify in the assessment.
