The Effects of a Park Visit Program on Individuals With Dementia and Their Caregivers

Mild DementiaModerate Dementia1 more

The overall goals of our project is to understand the effects of participating in park visits and nature-based activities for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Nature-based activities such as park visits can have beneficial effects on quality of life, psychological symptoms and physical health. However, there may be barriers for people with dementia and their caregivers that may prevent them from engaging in park visits. The Nature Connections park visit program will provide education sessions for 10 persons living with dementia and 10 caregivers highlighting the beneficial effects of park visits and address common barriers to participating in park visits. Following the education session participants will be provided with weekly telephone/internet support meetings for participants to share their experiences with park visits and to address any challenges individuals encountered when trying to complete their visits. The impact of park visits on quality of life, behaviours, and measures of stress for people with dementia and their caregivers will be assessed over 8 weeks. Following completion of the program participants will provide an evaluation of the program to understand their experience and satisfaction with the program. This project will provide new information about the effects of park visits as a practical strategy to improve the quality of life, psychological symptoms and measures of stress for both people with dementia and caregivers.

3D Team Care for Cognitively Vulnerable Older Adults

DementiaDepression1 more

This study addresses how to achieve better outcomes for cognitively vulnerable community-dwelling older adults and their families. Cognitive vulnerability means living with dementia, depression, and/or a recent episode of delirium (the 3Ds). The investigators will test the effectiveness of a team care model focused on the 3Ds (Home Based Care Team) guided by nurse practitioners with expertise in geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry. Specific aims are to determine Home Based Care Team effects on hospitalization or emergency department use, and other outcomes including depression, disability, and quality of life.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cognition in Diabetic Elderly at High Dementia Risk

Diabetes Mellitus

An urgent need exists to identify effective interventions to arrest or reverse dementia and cognitive loss at its earliest stages. The proposed pilot randomized clinical trial will investigate the short and long-term effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on cognitive functioning, cerebral blood flow, and glucose uptake in diabetic elderly with mild cognitive impairment. and provide the basis for a large-scale multi-center study of hyperbaric oxygen therapy effects on cognition in diabetes. The potential to preserve, or even enhance, cognition in elderly at high risk of cognitive decline and dementia has major implications for the affected individuals and their support systems that bear the social and financial burdens of long-term caregiving.

A Ten-Week Online Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Intervention for Family Caregivers of People...

Depressive Symptoms

This randomized controlled trial aims to assess the effects of a coach-guided ten-week videoconferencing acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) program on mental health outcomes in depressed family caregivers of people with dementia (PwD) compared to the control group. A total of 64 family caregivers of PwD who meet the eligibility criteria will be recruited and randomized to either the intervention group or the control group. The hypotheses are that the ACT group will show improvements in depressive symptoms, other mental health outcomes, and ACT process measures at posttest and 3-month follow-up, compared to the control group.
