Investigation of Nickel Sensitization After Percutaneous Implantation of Patent Foramen Ovale Occluder...

Percutaneous PFO closure has been established as a first-line therapy for preventing recurrent strokes in selected patients. The devices used for the specific purpose contain and release nickel, which is considered as the most allergen metal in nature. Skin patch tests are considered as gold-standard for documenting nickel allergy. While the allergic contact dermatitis induced by nickel is well described, literature is inadequate on explaining the effect of nickel release on the clinical manifestations of patients implanted with such devices. Our prospective, randomized, blinded trial will try to investigate the above by performing nickel skin patch tests to all patients, 14 days before and 90 days after the implantation. During follow-up, clinical manifestations and transthoracic echocardiographic findings will be evaluated and associated with patch skin tests.

Radiation Dermatitis

Radiation induced dermatitis (RID) is one of the leading adverse events of radiation therapy, and if occurred could alter the course of therapy. The main pathways of RID is inflammation and oxidative stress on local and systemic bases. Nigella sativa is an herbal medicine whose anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities have been proven in several clinical trials. Thus, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the efficacy of Nigella sativa as a prophylactic method against the development of RID.

Atopic DermatitisType 1 Hypersensitivity

This is a Phase 1b/2, randomized, double-blind, multi-center study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and preliminary clinical efficacy of STMC-103H in neonates and infants at risk for developing allergic disease (Type 1 hypersensitivity). Subjects will be enrolled in a three-part sequential approach. Participants in the safety-run portion of the study (Part A1: 1 year to <6 years of age and A2: 1 month to <12 months of age) will receive 28 days of treatment with STMC-103H or placebo, followed by 28 days of follow-up. A Data and Safety Monitoring Committee (DSMC) will review safety data after all patients in each part complete 28 days of therapy prior to enrolling the next part. After A2, Part B will enroll 224 patients for 336 days of treatment with STMC-103H or placebo, followed by 336 days of follow-up. Stool, blood, and optional samples will be collected in Parts A2 and part B. Primary safety endpoints are frequency, type and severity of Adverse Events (AEs) and Serious Adverse Events (SAEs), as well as findings on physical exams, vitals, and safety laboratories. The primary efficacy endpoint is incidence of physician-diagnosed atopic dermatitis at day 336.

Effectiveness of a Cream for Treatment of Dermatitis in Patients Whith Breast Cancer

DERMATITIS INDUCED BY RADIOTHERAPY IN PATIENTS WHITH BREAST CANCER

It is intended to evaluate the effect of a marketed cream (Alantel®) based on natural products at high concentrations for the preventive and curative treatment (early stages) of radiation-induced dermatitis in cancer patients. For this, an experimental, prospective, controlled clinical trial, with two parallel arms, double blind, multicentre, will be carried out in which doctors will recruit 78 patients aged 14 years or over in Primary Care consultations. more, diagnosed with cancer, and having received radiotherapeutic cancer treatment, being randomly assigned to the experimental group (cosmetic cream) or the control group (emollient and moisturizing cream). The main variable will be the incidence rate of mild post-translational dermatitis and its improvement or cure once it has been established.

Radiotherapy for head and neck cancer can cause severe mucositis (ulcers in the mouth) and pain. Photobiomodulation (Light therapy) will be used before and during radiotherapy to try to reduce the occurence and severity of mucositis in patients treated with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer Previous studies in head and neck cancer patients have shown that photobiomodulation (light therapy) can prevent mucositis. There are currently no centers in Canada using this technique in routine practice, but this is recommended in International guidelines and widely used in Europe. The investigators therefore wish to implement this technique in Ottawa under the umbrella of a clinical trial to insure its safety and efficacy in a Canadian context.
