African-American Bone Metabolism and Lactation Study

LactationBone Diseases1 more

The primary aim of this study is to obtain measures of amino-terminal telopeptides of procollagen 1 (P1NP), a marker of bone formation, in lactating and non-lactating post-partum African-American women both at 6-8 and at 12-14 weeks post-partum, and to compare these values to those of normal controls. The secondary aim is to obtain at the same time points, measurements of Parathyroid Hormone-related Protein (PTHrP), additional markers of bone turnover [e.g. N-telopeptide of collagen cross-links (NTx), C-telopeptide of collagen cross-links (Ctx),bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP) and osteocalcin (OC)], calcium and vitamin D metabolism in these subjects. These results will be compared with a non-African-American cohort of post-partum women and normal controls. The investigators hypothesize that African-American lactating women will have increased bone turnover when compared to non-lactating postpartum women and normal controls. The investigators further hypothesize that bone turnover is increased in lactating women independent of race.

Bone Metabolism and Parathyroid Hormone-related Protein (PTHrP) Lactation Study

Bone DiseasesEndocrine

The primary aim of the study is to measure bone formation in both lactating and non-lactating post-partum women and compare these to those in healthy non-pregnant controls. The secondary aim is to obtain measurements of Parathyroid Hormone-related Protein (PTHrP), markers of bone resorption, and calcium and vitamin D metabolism in these subjects. The investigators believe that lactating women will have an increase in bone resorption but no increase in bone formation when compared to non-lactating post-partum women and normal controls.

Biochemical Changes in Blood Plasma After Intense Physical Exercise of Healthy Volunteers

Hormone DisturbanceEndorphin Changes

This study will recruit 20 male and female athletes of endurance training background. They will participate in 50 minutes of vigorous activity on a treadmill with 3 blood draws (before exercising, 50 minutes into exercising, and 30 minutes after completion of exercising). After collection of the blood samples, the results will be analyzed for extracellular vesicles and biochemical changes within said extracellular vesicles.

Tissue Samples and Bodily Fluid Specimens Banking

Endocrine Disorders of Female Reproductive System

The purpose of this study is to collect a portion of blood/tissue specimens that will be generated during the participants office visit or surgery. The investigators are asking whether a small portion of the specimen/s could be set aside and banked for future research purposes. Data originating from participants will be gathered and analyzed in research studies that will help understanding various medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital uterine malformations, endocrine malfunctions, endometriosis, and infertility.

Pharmacokinetics Study of Gamma-aminobutyric Acid

Diabetes MellitusDiabetes Mellitus6 more

The purpose of this study is to determine upon administering GABA orally to a person how it is absorbed, distributed, as well as the drug's pharmacological effects on the body such as glucose levels, serum C-peptide and/or insulin levels (referred to as pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics). We will conduct experiments in normal subjects to address these questions.

Immune CHeckpoint Inhibitors Monitoring of Adverse Drug ReAction

ArthritisCancer6 more

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) might have high grade immune-related adverse events (irAEs) from rhumatologic, endocrinologic, cardiac or other system origin. This study investigates reports of drug induced irAEs with treatment including anti-PD1, Anti-PDL-1, and Anti-CTLA4 classes using the World Health Organization (WHO) database VigiBase and the french database Base Nationale de PharmacoVigilance (BNPV).

Male:Female Birth Ratios and Phthalate Levels

Endocrine Diseases

Objective 1: To assess environmental exposure to chemicals/toxins, including phthalates, among rural and urban Mexican American men and women (n=300), aged 18 to 40, in urban Baytown, TX and rural Rio Grande Valley (Hidalgo County) communities along the Texas-Mexico border region via survey. Objective 2: To determine generational sex ratio trends in urban Baytown, TX and along the rural Rio Grande Valley (Hidalgo County) utilizing vital statistics data from the Texas Department of Health and the Center for Health Statistics. Objective 3: To measure urinary phthalate levels and self-reported phthalate exposure in Mexican American men and women from urban Baytown, Texas and rural communities along the lower Rio Grande Valley (Hidalgo County) on theTexas-Mexico border. To conduct an optional procedure, chromosomal sex determination, among a subgroup of 50 persons (13 men + 12 women in each community) from participants who complete the survey in Objective 1.
