Effect of SLT Location on Treatment Outcomes

Glaucoma

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a glaucoma treatment that has been shown to effectively lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous outflow through macrophage recruitment. There is evidence of increased drainage in the nasal quadrants of the eye. This study aims to compare whether there is a difference in the reduction of eye pressure when SLT is performed nasally and temporally.

Early Diagnosis, Pathogenesis and Progression of Open Angle Glaucoma

Primary Open Angle GlaucomaSecondary Open Angle Glaucoma1 more

The Erlangen Glaucoma Registry is a clinical registry for cross sectional and longitudinal observation of patients with open angle glaucoma (OAG) or glaucoma suspect, founded in 1991. The primary aim is the evaluation of diagnostic and prognostic validity of morphometrical, sensory and hemodynamical diagnostic procedures. No therapeutic studies are performed.

Prevalence of Dyschromatopsia in Glaucoma Patients

Open Angle Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a progressive disease resulting in loss of retinal nerve cells and their axons (retinal nerve fibers). Retinal nerve fibers are ordered in a special manner when they enter the optic nerve. Hence, damage to the retinal nerve fibers by glaucoma results in visual field defects at certain locations. Furthermore, the retinal nerve fiber layers from different receptors for different colors are ordered in a special manner as well. Thus, it is possible that glaucomatous damage causes color vision dysfunction (dyschromatopsia). At the moment there is disagreement whether dyschromatopsia occurs at early- to mid-stage or only in end-stage glaucoma. By testing color vision in glaucoma patients the prevalence of dyschromatopsia in glaucoma and in different stages of the disease will be investigated.

Cellular Proteome From Leukocytes of Glaucoma Patients in Comparison With Patients With Alzheimer's...

Alzheimer's DiseaseGlaucoma

Glaucoma is a worldwide leading cause of blindness. The key feature of this ocular neuropathy is characterized by an excavating optic nerve head. Loss of retinal ganglion cells is the final end point in blinding diseases of the optic nerve such as glaucoma. It is known that neuronal cell death in glaucoma occurs by an apoptotic mechanism. In earlier studies the investigators could demonstrate that the process of apoptosis is reflected in circulating leukocytes by different parameters, like differential mRNA expression and an increased fragmentation of the DNA. Such alterations point out a relationship between cellular stress and apoptotic events. Based on the results of mRNA-expression the investigators also expect alterations on the protein level. This study is, therefore, designed to characterize the proteome related to the proteins involved in cell death related pathways. Thus, the expression pattern of several proteins in leukocytes from patients with primary open angle glaucoma will be analyzed by techniques like Western-blot and tandem mass spectrometry. These samples will be compared with samples from healthy controls. In addition, they will also be compared with samples from patients with Alzheimer's disease. Since glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease, these patients will be included as positive controls in this study.

Mitochondrial DNA in Vitreous Fluid and Blood in Patients With Eye Disease or Ocular Trauma.

Eye DiseasesOphthalmic Trauma4 more

This study is to characterize mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) populations in adults with eye injuries and eye diseases. The eye exam is often hindered by the clouding of tissues involved in injury or disease. This protocol examines the use of mtDNA populations as indicators of developing inflammation and resolution of injury. This may be used to provide proactive treatment or define appropriate treatment needs beyond the indications of an ophthalmological exam.

24-hour IOP Fluctuation Profile Recorded With SENSIMED Triggerfish in Primary Open-angle Glaucoma...

Glaucoma

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations of glaucoma patients as recorded with an IOP-sensing contact lens (SENSIMED Triggerfish®), during two 24-hour periods, before and after cataract surgery. This device has previously been investigated and shown to be safe and well tolerated.

Ocular Fluorophotometry for Glaucoma Treated With Cyclo-coagulation Using High Intensity Focused...

Refractory Open Angle Glaucoma

Monocentric prospective study conducted in two phases evaluating the secretion and elimination of aqueous humor by fluorophotometry in patients with glaucoma treated with cyclo-coagulation with ultrasound. Population selected: - Patients with refractory open angle glaucoma despite previous treatments currently validated for glaucoma. The purpose of our study is: - To evaluate the mechanism of action of glaucoma treatment by cyclo-coagulation with high intensity focused ultrasound in studying the secretion and elimination of aqueous humor by fluorophotometry. Planning: First phase: 2 patients (feasibility study) If reduction of at least 10% of the flow of aqueous humor production at one month in the first two patients in the feasibility study, further in second phase. Second phase: 6 patients
