Vitamin D Status Impacts Inflammation and Risk of Infections During Pregnancy

InflammationInfection

The goal of this study is to characterize the function and efficacy of the bioactive nutrient, vitamin D, in relation to infection and inflammatory status across pregnancy. The three specific aims of this study are 1) To address the impact of maternal vitamin D status on inflammation and infections across pregnancy using retrospective data, 2) To address the impact of vitamin D supplementation on maternal vitamin D status, inflammation and infections across pregnancy using prospective data and 3) To assess the impact of maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy on inflammatory mediators at the level of the placenta.

A Study to Assess the Relative Bioavailability of Tablet Formulations of GSK2248761 in Healthy Adult...

InfectionsHuman Immunodeficiency Virus and Herpesviridae2 more

This is a single-center, randomized, two part, open-label, crossover study in healthy adult subjects to assess the oral bioavailability of three GSK2248761 Wet Bead Milled (WBM) tablet formulations manufactured by three different processes relative to the GSK2248761 WBM capsule formulation (Part A) and the effect of a moderate-fat meal on the bioavailability of the selected WBM tablet formulation (Part B).

DCVax Plus Poly ICLC in Healthy Volunteers

HIV-1 InfectionHIV Infection1 more

DCVax-001 is a recombinant protein vaccine designed to prevent and potentially treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The vaccine is composed of a fusion protein containing a human monoclonal antibody specific for the dendritic cell receptor, DEC-205 (CD205), and the HIV gag p24 protein. The vaccine is designed to target HIV antigens directly to endocytic pathways in dendritic cells (DCs) that allow for efficient processing and presentation of multiple HIV peptides on both MHC class I and II products, which will induce HIV-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. This vaccine candidate must be combined with appropriate immunostimulants (adjuvants) to induce immunity to the antigen. In the proposed clinical trial we will use poly ICLC (Hiltonol) from Oncovir, Inc as the adjuvant.

Effect of the Consumption of a Fermented Milk on Common Infections in Shift-workers

Infectious DiseasesHealthy Subjects8 more

This single-center, randomized, double-blind and controlled study aims to examine the effect of a fermented dairy product containing the probiotic Lactobacillus casei DN-114 001 (Actimel® = tested product) on the incidence of respiratory and gastro-intestinal common infectious diseases (cumulated number of infections during the intervention period: primary criteria), and on immune functions in healthy shift workers. Volunteers received either 200g/day of tested product (N=500) or control product (N=500) for 3-months, followed by a 1-month follow-up.

A Study Evaluating the Pharmacokinetics of Ceftobiprole When Taken by Obese Patients

ObesityStaphylococcal Skin Infections1 more

The primary objective of this study is to compare the pharmacokinetics (how drugs are absorbed in the body, how they are distributed within the body and how they are removed from the body over time) of ceftobiprole in morbidly obese patients and non-obese patients. The secondary objectives are to assess the pharmacodynamics (the study of the action or effects a drug has on the body) and to assess safety and tolerability of ceftobiprole in order to support dosing recommendations in the morbidly obese population.

The Development of a Human Model of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection

Respiratory Syncytial Virus InfectionsRespiratory Viral Infections

The aim of this study is to understand the immune response (how the body fights infection) to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This virus usually causes a simple 'common cold' illness in healthy adults, but can cause wheezing and lung problems in young infants and the elderly. The investigators want to understand why this is, in order to develop vaccines and treatments. Participants will include 30-40 healthy adults age 18-55 years. Study procedures will include brief medical exams, breathing tests, a diary of symptoms, blood tests, samples of fluid (lavage) and cells from the nose, throat and lungs. All participants will receive the virus via drops in the nose. The duration of the study for all subjects will be 6 weeks.
