Reducing Aerosol and Bioaerosol Using Different Oral Suctions

InfectionsOral Infection

Aerosol particles generated when using dental instrument such as ultrasonic and high air driven handpieces, this aerosol is mixture of blood, saliva, infectious agents, and dental materials. Inhaler dust that range between PM2.5 to PM10 could transferred to the human lung's terminal bronchioles and alveoli that cause a harm effect. The aim of this study to assess the effectiveness of different dental suction devices that could be contributed to decrease risk of particles count, Bacterial and fungal that arising from patient mouth to indoor air dental clinic. This is a randomized clinical trial will be conducted in three different places: educational hospital, public hospital, and private clinic. In each place 40 subject will be recruited. Measurement including particles count and microorganism will be taken before 15 minutes and during of scaling and prophylaxis procedure to measure particles count, oral bacteria, fungus, and microbial air. In this study will be compared between four intervention groups; Group A with high and low suction only, Group B using dry shield suction and low section, Group C using extra-oral suction with high and low suction, and Group D using dry shield suction and extra-oral suction and low section. Difference between each categorical groups and particle, oral bacterial, fungus, and microbial air concentration will be tested using two-way ANOVA test or one way ANOVA test. Statistical analysis will be carried using STATA version 13.

Genetic Susceptibility to Periprosthetic Joint Infections

Total Joint ArthroplastyPeriprosthetic Joint Infections

The investigators primary objective is to identify genetic factors that may increase the risk of patients developing a periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The investigators hope that by identifying genetic predispositions we will be able to provide patient specific care pathways to prevent or minimize the risk for PJI.

Pilot Clinical Trial - Comparative Study of Two Material Concentration of OD-141309

Infectious Disease

A sufficient number of subjects will be entered into testing to complete 42 subjects per each of the 2 test and 2 control configurations. A total of 84 subjects, testing bi-laterally (168 abdomen and groin sites in total completed, 42 abdomen and groin sites per each test and control material) will be evaluated using the standardized ASTM E1173 test method. Following a 14-day restriction period, subjects will be sampled for baseline, 10 minutes, 6 hours, and 24 hours post application (subjects will not be sequestered) for microbial reduction evaluations. Test day baseline criteria will be set at: abdomen: ≥ 3.0 log10 CFU/cm2, and groin: ≥ 5.0 log10 CFU/cm2.

COVID-19 Serology in People Living With HIV in Hong Kong

HIV InfectionsSARS-CoV-2 Infection1 more

Immunodeficiency associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection could predispose people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) to defective serological responses following infection or vaccination. To evaluate the health outcomes of coronovirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and HIV co-infection, PLHA and HIV-uninfected persons in Hong Kong are invited to join a study for understanding their clinical characteristics and for tracking their levels of antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) over a one-year observation period after infection or vaccination. The results could inform the development of prevention and control strategy for PLHA in response to the emerging coronavirus threats.

Oral Care With 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (Oroxid®) in ICU - Effects on the Lower Airway Microbial Colonisation...

VAP - Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

HyPerMICROBE is a single-centre, controlled, randomised, prospective, superiority clinical trial to compare the efficacy of daily oral care with 3% hydrogen peroxide (Oroxid®) versus standard of care (0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate) on the cumulative incidence of lower respiratory tract microbial colonisation in mechanically ventilated adult critically ill patients.

Seville Cohort of People at Substantial Risk for HIV Infection on Pre-exposure Prophylaxis

HIV Infection PrimaryHepatitis4 more

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) based on tenofovir represents a considerably new preventive intervention that has shown to significantly decrease the number of HIV infections while it enables early diagnosis of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STI). In Southern Spain, the target population to receive PrEP are men who have sex with men (MSM) with a history of STI and who pursue high-risk sexual practices regarding the acquisition of HIV, including an elevate number of sex partners, no or inconsistent condom use and the use of specific recreational drugs in the context of sexual activity ("chemsex"). Despite the benefits of PrEP use, it must be taken into consideration that risk compensations that may facilitate the acquisition of other STI may occur, including a higher implementation of risk practices and an increase in the number of partners, which is made easy as various social networks designed for this purpose are available nowadays. In order to better understand the benefit/drawback ratio, accurate data of a population using PrEP under real-life conditions, with densely scheduled follow-up and well-characterized (socio-)demographic parameters, sexual behaviour and STI are warranted.

Clinical and Immunological Responses After SARS-CoV-2 Infection Causing COVID-19

Covid19SARS-CoV2 Infection4 more

There are very few long-term studies that analyze the immune responses in patients recovered from COVID-19 caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The main aim of this study is to analyze the clinical profile and immune responses of recovered COVID-19 patients in a representative cohort of people in the Umbria region of Italy. The participants had a history of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 in March 2020 by Reverse Transcriptase- Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR). The participants were invited for voluntary participation in a seroprevalence study. This study analyzes longitudinally the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 by sequential serological tests at different time points using two FDA-approved Immunoassays. At the first serum sample collection, the participants were asked to provide information about their COVID-19 clinical history including clinical profile, co-morbidities, and treatment undertaken using a standardized questionnaire. Successive sequential serological assessments were conducted to understand the immune responses in these recovered patients. Moreover, stage two of the study involves, analysis of antibody titers in recovered vaccinated individuals and their follow-up.

Evaluation of the National Tool for Observation of Infection Prevention Measures in the Healthcare...

InfectionsRespiratory1 more

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) is introducing a new electronic tool for direct observation of compliance with recommended infection prevention and control measures in healthcare. The solution is called the National Tool for Observation of Infection Prevention Measures (NOST). NOST is a quality improvement tool that includes a web-based solution for observing compliance with recommendations for hand hygiene and other IPC measures. Through NOST, healthcare personnel will be able to identify the local level of compliance, which in turn can reveal areas for improvement. This protocol includes the evaluation of NOST in hospitals. The evaluation is designed as a cluster-randomized controlled trial with two arms where eligible wards in hospitals are randomly allocated into an intervention and a control arm. NOST is implemented in the intervention wards at the start of the evaluation period, and compliance with hand hygiene and other outcomes are measured in both the interventions and control wards one year later. The objective of evaluating NOST is to: measure if implementation of NOST leads to improved infection prevention and control in the form of increased compliance with hand hygiene recommendations, and measure if changes in the quality of infection prevention and control as a result of implemented NOST affects the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections in healthcare institutions and the length of hospital stays.
