Investigating Outcomes of Lower Limb Trauma

Trauma

This is an observational study, which aims to firstly develop a sensor-based objective mobility assessment. This will then be used to profile and compare the outcomes of patients who undergo amputation with those who have limb salvage surgery following a traumatic injury to their lower limb.

The Natural History of Human Stingray Injuries

Stingray injuries can be a hazard shared by many types of beachgoers. Stingrays often lie in the sand and when stepped on by the unsuspecting beachgoer their tail snaps foreword, resulting in a barbed stinger injecting venom into the victim. Little exists in the current literature on the natural history of stingray injuries. Most of the existing literature looks at the incidence of stings, and to a certain extent the demographic of people who seek care. To our knowledge no study has attempted to collect a more inclusive population of those people who are stung and follow them prospectively to determine the incidence of medical intervention, infection, etc. This study aims to describe and quantify the natural history of stingray injuries and to better understand their time course and medical requirements. The study setting will be Seal Beach, which reports some of the greatest number of annual stingray injuries for any single beach on the pacific coast. Participants will be identified by the Seal Beach lifeguards who are believed to treat the majority of stingray injuries suffered at the beach. Eligible persons will be consented for participation over the phone by research personnel. If enrolled in the study they will receive a phone call by research personnel one week and one month after the injury that will collect information about the symptoms they have experienced and the medical interventions they have received, if any. This study is strictly observational in nature and will not involve any interventions on the part of study personnel or alter the manner in which or types of medical assessments or treatments.

Do Common Physical Tests Predict Injury or Performance

Field tests are convenient, simple tests that serve as estimates of components of athletic performance like power speed, and agility. It is thought clinically, that those who do best at these tests will perform the best in their sport and/or be the least likely to get injured. The converse is also thought to be true. The objective of this study is to administer field tests to athletes at the beginning of each season and then follow athletes over several years, tracking their injuries and their performance statistics. In this way, the investigators can determine if the clinical supposition is true and that the results of field tests are associated with injury or performance

Central Auditory Processing Deficits Associated With Blast Exposure

The current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have resulted in unprecedented rates of exposure to high-intensity blasts and resulting brain injury. This research team has established that recently blast-exposed Soldiers show differences from controls on tests of central auditory function. This project will 1) develop a more accurate estimate of the prevalence of central auditory dysfunction among Veterans exposed to blasts over the past ten years, 2) identify the functional outcomes associated with abnormal performance on tests of central processing, and 3) improve understanding of the ways in which blast-exposure resembles and differs from both the normal aging process and non-blast-related TBI in terms of performance on tests of central auditory processing.

The goals of this study are to develop an objective, multi-modal classification scheme and outcome measures for traumatic brain injury based on several measures: (1) blood-based biomarkers (indicates which cell types are damaged), (2) eye tracking (detects mass effect/elevated intracranial pressure and pathway disruption), (3) radiographic measures of CT and MRI (detect structural abnormalities), and (4) standardized outcome assessments.
