The cutaneous homeostasis maintenance is dependent on the cross talk between several immune sentinels present in the different compartments of the skin as well as the interplay between innate and adaptive immune responses. The whole is under the control of gene regulation. However, cutaneous homeostasis disruption occurs when the SIS safe framework erroneously sends aggravation signals due to gene regulation disbalance via inflammatory cellular and molecular mediators into the site of infection causing chronic inflammation characterized by thick red irritated skin lesions. It has been shown that myeloid PTP1B deficiency protects against atherosclerosis. As hypoxia has also been shown to increase PTP1B expression and activity, this study will evaluate the myeloid PTP1B expression and activity in patients with OSA as compared to controls and will investigate myeloid PTP1B involvement in the vascular pro inflammatory precess described in OSA.

One of the mechanisms by which this may occur is via chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Adenosine plays an important role in sleep homeostasis, with levels increasing in the CSF in response to sleep deprivation and falling with sleep. Peripherally, adenosine, via its signaling pathway, plays an important role in immunoregulation by suppressing the inflammatory response. PLWH, even on antiretroviral therapy, have suppressed peripheral adenosine levels which are predictive of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The hypothesis underlying this study is that acute sleep deprivation in PLWH does not result in a compensatory increase in extracellular adenosine and its signaling peripherally, and this failure to appropriately compensate, leads to an increase in systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction.

Considering this scenario, bioactive compounds have been considered as a therapeutic alternative in the modulation of intestinal microbiota as well as transcription factors such as nuclear-kappa factor B (NF-κB) and factor 2 nuclear factor-related erythroid 2 Nrf2), involved with oxidative stress and inflammation. Among several foods, cranberry is a fruit rich in flavonoids and other polyphenols, which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory actions and may be an adjuvant treatment for CKD complications. However, clinical evidence evaluating the effects of cranberry is limited and there are no studies specifically involving patients with CKD. Thus, the present randomized crossover double-blind crossover with placebo-controlled washout period will aim to evaluate the effects of cranberry supplementation on the modulation of the intestinal microbiota and expression of transcription factors as well as cytokine levels inflammatory effects of CKD patients.

Both lean and fatty fish are shown to have beneficial health effects. In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, fish contain potential health-promoting components such as taurine, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iodine, selenium and more unspecified components such as bioactive peptides. With the expected growth in the aquaculture sector, more protein-rich by-products will become available. The overall aim of this project is to investigate physiological and molecular effects of fish protein in the form of salmon fishmeal compared to whey in a human intervention study with regard to carbohydrate- and fat metabolism, endocrine factors and inflammation. The investigators will include healthy subjects to a randomized controlled cross over study. The subjects will receive a single, oral dose of fishmeal or whey. Blood samples are taken before (fasting) and 30 and 60 minutes after intake. The molecular effects of fishmeal and whey are investigated ex vivo. This is done by incubating human cell lines (i.e hepatocytes, adipocytes, epithelial cells) with fasting and postprandial serum from the participants.
