Co-treatment With Pegvisomant and a Somatostatin Analogue (SA) in SA-responsive Acromegalic Patients...
AcromegalyInsulin Resistance1 moreThe purpose of this study is to investigate if co-treatment of acromegalic patients, who beforehand are considered well-controlled on SA monotherapy, with pegvisomant and SA will improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, and if these effects of co-treatment can be obtained at a neutral cost as compared to SA mono therapy. Second to investigate body composition, substrate metabolism, symptoms, intrahepatic and intramyocellular fat.
Spironolactone and Insulin Resistance in Chronic Heart Failure (CHF)
Chronic Stable Heart FailureThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of spironolactone and furosemide on insulin resistance in patients with chronic heart failure.
Pioglitazone Before Peginterferon and Ribavirin for Hepatitis C Infection in HIV/HCV-Coinfected...
HIV-1 and Hepatitis C Co-InfectionInsulin resistance is common in people coinfected with HIV and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and is associated with poor responses to treatment for HCV. Pioglitazone is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It works by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin. The purpose of this study is to determine whether treatment with pioglitazone prior to HCV treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin is safe and effective in improving the treatment outcome in insulin-resistant, HIV/HCV-coinfected people for whom previous treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin was unsuccessful.
Combination Metformin and Oral Contraception for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic Ovary SyndromePCOS1 moreThe purpose of this research study is to determine if adding Metformin, a drug that reduces insulin resistance, to birth control pills will reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure. high lipid levels and heart disease in women with PCOS
Effects of Infliximab on Insulin Sensitivity and Beta Cell Function in Insulin Resistant Human Obesity...
ObesityInsulin Resistance1 moreThe aim of the study is to test whether neutralizing TNF-alpha with infliximab affects insulin resistance and phenotypical manifestations of the metabolic syndrome as fasting plasma insulin, total body fat, plasma lipid profile or vascular endothelial function in obese male subjects.
Effect of Vitamin E on Pediatric Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
InflammationFibrosis1 moreNo proven treatment exists for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children and adolescents. We aim to determine the efficacy of lifestyle intervention with or without antioxidant therapy in pediatric NAFLD.

Effects of (1,3), (1,6)-Beta-D-glucan on Insulin Sensitivity and Inflammatory Markers of the Metabolic...
OverweightInsoluble (1,3),(1,6)-beta-D-glucan from bakers yeast are indigestible polysaccharides. Previous studies indicate that the intake of insoluble dietary fiber is strongly associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the mechanisms leading to this phenomenon are largely unknown. There are close relations between metabolic and inflammatory pathways, and a number of hormones, cytokines, signal proteins, bioactive lipids, and transcription factors have been shown to be involved in both systems. Beta-D-glucans have been suggested to play a role as so called biological response modifiers. Studies in animals indicate that even small doses of (1,3),(1,6)-beta-D-glucan may have beneficial effects on immune activity, i.e., by reducing the secretion of inflammatory factors. The investigators hypothesize that the intake of isolated (1,3), (1,6)-beta-D-glucan from bakers yeast improves inflammatory makers and insulin-sensitivity in overweight subjects with increased C-reactive protein concentrations at baseline.
Insulin Resistance and Central Nervous System (CNS) Function in Type 2 Diabetes
Insulin ResistanceType 2 Diabetes MellitusThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of treating insulin resistance on memory and attention, brain glucose utilization, and proteins in spinal fluid.
