EpilepsyMental RetardationThis is an open randomized controlled study in children with mental retardation and refractory epilepsy in which treatment with ketogenic diet (KD) is compared with treatment with the antiepileptic drug (AED), not tried by the patient before, which we consider to be the most appropriate AED for the patient.
Repetitive Behavior Disorders in People With Severe Mental Retardation
Mental RetardationStereotyped Behavior2 moreRepetitive behavior disorders are prevalent among people with severe mental retardation. These disorders can interfere significantly with an individual's daily functions. This trial is part of a long-term project that has studied the biologic basis of and possible treatments for repetitive behavior disorders. The trial will evaluate the effectiveness of two medications, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and an atypical antipsychotic, in treating repetitive behavior disorders in people with mental retardation.

This study will evaluate self-injurious behavior in people with mental retardation or autism and will test the effectiveness of new treatments.
Pilot Project of Forest Bathing for Promoting Health
Intellectual DisabilityAn exploratory trial using a cuasi-experimental design aimed to improve the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities. The intervention consists of 11 consecutive sessions of forest bathing (one session per week), each one lasting about 2 hours. Each session involves an easy walk through a forest area, interspersed with non-intrusive activities of contact with the surrounding nature aimed at fostering mindfulness and the use of the five senses. Data were collected at baseline, post intervention, and 7 months of follow-up.

Mental RetardationSyndromic ObesityComparative genomic hybridization (CGH) array technology has been used in numerous studies on mental retardation, and few chromosomal abnormalities have been identified in patients. Because chromosomal abnormalities have still been associated with obesity, we can expect that syndromic obesity is also associated with small deletions/duplications. Characterization of deleted or duplicated loci in these obese patients would mean that these loci include genes implicated in obesity. This will permit to propose new gene(s) involved in obesity. FCT With Young Children With ID in the UK: A Feasibility Project V.1
Intellectual DisabilityThe current project aims to assess the feasibility of conducting Functional Communication Training in the UK with a small sample of young children (aged under 9) in an NHS setting. Three delivery formats will be assessed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of conducting FCT via different delivery methods within an NHS context. Participants will be four children aged under 9 who have an identified intellectual / developmental disability and display either self-injury, property destruction, or aggression at home. In addition, one family carer per child will be coached to implement the intervention, either following researcher intervention, or from the beginning. Data will be collected on challenging behaviour, communication responses, family carer confidence in managing behaviour, fidelity of intervention implementation, family quality of life, and acceptability of the intervention.
Enhancing Genomic Laboratory Reports to Enhance Communication and Empower Patients
Intellectual DisabilityAutism1 moreCurrent lab reports are designed to communicate results from the laboratory to the provider; they are not designed to be accessible to patients. The investigators believe that a new type of genomic test report, tailored for patient- as well as provider-use, will enable patients to have access to information they can understand allowing them to be more involved in the management of their disorders, better navigate the health care system, and make more informed decisions about their health and health care in conjunction with their providers. This approach has the potential to improve outcomes from both the patient and provider perspectives. The investigators propose to study the research question, "Can a genomic laboratory report tailored for both providers and families of patients improve interpretation of complex results and facilitate recommended care by enhancing communication and shared decision making?"
