Golf After Orthopaedic Surgery: A Longitudinal Follow-up (GOLF) Study

Aims The primary aim of this prospective, multi-centre study is to describe the rates of returning to golf following hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty in an active golfing population. Secondary aims will include determining the timing of return to golf, changes in ability, handicap, and mobility, and assessing joint-specific and health-related outcomes following surgery. Methods This is a multi-centre, prospective, longitudinal study between the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City and Edinburgh Orthopaedics, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Both centres are high-volume arthroplasty centres, specialising in upper and lower limb arthroplasty. Patients undergoing hip, knee or shoulder arthroplasty at either centres, and who report being golfers prior to arthroplasty will be included. Patient-reported outcome measures will obtained at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. A one-year period of recruitment will be undertaken of arthroplasty patients at both sites. Conclusions The results of this prospective study will provide clinicians with accurate data to deliver to patients with regards to the likelihood of return to golf and timing of when they can expect to return to golf following their hip, knee or shoulder arthroplasty, as well as their joint-specific functional outcomes. This will help patients to manage their postoperative expectations and plan their postoperative recovery pathway.

Total Hip Arthroplasty and Physical Activity in Patients Younger Than 50 Years

Rationale: THA is a widely applied procedure for osteoarthritis of the hip. After THA, one can expect an increase in physical activity due to the reduction of pain and increased range of motion of the hip joint, especially in young patients who in general have more active lifestyles. However, these young patients and their doctors don't know which increase in physical activity can be expected. Objective: To measure the difference in physical activity before and after THA. Study design: Longitudinal prospective single center observational study. Study population: 87 patients who have primary THA under the age of 50 years. Excluding patients with an underlying oncologic disease which results in THA. Intervention: N.a. Main study parameters/endpoints: The first primary endpoint is physical activity in minutes per day. The other primary endpoint is MVPA in minutes per day. Secondary endpoints are difference of TUG outcomes in seconds and the difference of 6MWT outcomes in meters. For the patients experience, the COPM total scores and NRS pain scores will be measured. Nature and extent of the burden and risks associated with participation, benefit and group relatedness: This study requires three outpatient clinic visits. These visits will coincide with regular outpatient clinic visits, so patients will not have to come in extra for this study. During the preoperative and 1 year postoperative visit, the patients will complete the COPM. The patient will wear a PA monitor for 7 days after each visit. Patients might experience confronting feelings while being exposed to their PA activity profile after the study or experience mild discomfort while wearing the PA monitor since it will be worn 24 hours per day for 7 days. Also, filling in the questionnaires will take some time (5-10 minutes per questionnaire series). There are no significant physical risks associated to this study.

Thus, it seems interesting to study and analyze the performance of the shortened stem used in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the University Hospitals of Strasbourg and to compare them with the results of the literature.

Patient-related outcomes were originally designed to measure outcomes in clinical studies. They were not developed to predict outcomes, however, different studies showed close association between values achieved preoperatively and postoperative outcomes. The aim of the present trial is to identify patients with satisfactory and unsatisfactory outcomes after joint replacement and to investigate whether there are any potential predicting potential in preoperative results of the patient-related outcomes and if there exist other predicting factors for functional recovery or treatment failure after joint replacement surgery.
