Mind-body Therapy (Remotely Delivered) for Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee Osteoarthritis

This proposal aims to provide crucial knowledge about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying Tai Chi mind-body therapy for knee osteoarthritis (OA). The central mechanism of knee OA pain will be investigated using brain imaging technology to evaluate how brain function and structure change in response to mind-body exercise over time. Sixty eligible individuals who meet the American College of Rheumatology criteria for knee OA will be randomized into Tai Chi or wellness education interventions for 12 weeks. The investigators will compare changes in resting state functional connectivity of the cognitive control network, and functional magnetic resonance imaging responses to pressure pain and brain morphometry, as well as their association with clinical outcomes. The findings will lead to the establishment of a new treatment paradigm in OA and have broad application to the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The Effect of Exercises of Different Intensity Applied After Total Knee Arthroplasty on Exercise-Induced...

Knee OsteoarthritisPain1 more

The aim of this study was to investigate whether exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) is present following exercise in patient after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and if so, if it changes with exercise intensity. A repeated measures and single-blinded randomized study were done. Thirty-eight patients 24 hours after TKA were randomly assigned to either low intensity exercises (LIE) group or high intensity exercises (HIE) group. An exercise programs lasted for five days during the hospitalization period. Pain severity was assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) (0-10 mm). Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) were measured over quadriceps and biceps brachii and muscles immediately before and after exercise.

Pain Control After Total Knee Arthroplasty

Knee Osteoarthritis

Patients are randomized to receive pain control after Total Knee Arthroplasty with either a regional pain catheter or a local intraarticular pain catheter. Pain, analgetic use and mobility is asessed.

A Pilot Trial of Acupuncture for Knee Osteoarthritis With Differential Functional Status of Acupoints...

AcupunctureKnee Osteoarthritis1 more

The investigators plan to undertake a rigorous multicentre randomised controlled trial, comparing acupuncture on sensitized acupoints with low/non-sensitive points or no acupuncture (waiting-list), to test if acupuncture on sensitized acupoints may result in improved treatment outcomes in patients with Knee osteoarthritis (KOA).The current pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of performing the definitive randomised controlled trial.

Use of Perioperative Photograph as a Motivation for Increasing Range of Motion After Primary Total...

OsteoarthritisKnee

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is recognized as a successful procedure for treating osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. One important factor that make the successful surgery is the degree of knee flexion. Providing more range of motion after TKA impact on the convenience of daily of life such as climbing stairs, sitting on the floor particularly in Asian cultures which require a lot of ground activities. Data are limited on the added benefits of perioperative photograph as motivation for increasing range of motion after TKA. Half of participants received perioperative photograph as motivation, while the other half did not after total knee arthroplasty.

Comparing Minimal Invasive Surgery en Conventional Total Knee Arthroplasty

OsteoarthritisKnee

Randomized clinical trial comparing minimal invasive operating technique to conventional operating technique for placement of total knee prosthesis. Clinical evaluations, patient questionnaires, X-rays and CT scans were done to compare these two techniques.

Influences of Balance Training With a Dynamometric Platform in Total Knee Arthroplasty

Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis produces degeneration and joint wear that greatly affects the patient's proprioceptive system increasing instability. After total knee arthroplasty intervention, it is recommended that the patient performs a rehabilitation procedure to minimize deficits caused by surgery. In this job it is essential to insist on the importance of recovering balance after total knee arthroplasty intervention, and assess a specifically designed protocol to restore its function. An intervention which includes a dynamometric platform as a training method was proposed. The randomized clinical trial compared a control group that performed balance exercises on parallel bars, unstable plates, ramps and stairs against an experimental group that included dynamometric platforms training as a differentiator.

Comparison Between Land-based and Water-based Exercises for Knee Osteoarthritis: Randomized Controlled...

Knee Osteoarthritis

Forty six patients with knee osteoarthritis will be randomly allocated into two groups: water-based exercises and land-based exercises. Both of them will receive a strengthening exercise protocol for lower limb muscles. A blind investigator will assess the patients before and immediately after, 3 months and 6 months following the interventions. The main outcomes will be pain, function and strength.
