Total Knee Replacement Study Using Standard Cutting Guide vs Otismed MRI Generated Cutting Guide...

Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Patients are referred to the VA orthopedic surgical clinic because of osteoarthritis and are requesting consideration for a total knee replacement. Those who qualify for the knee replacement are informed about the study. Those who consent to participate are randomly assigned to either the standard cutting guide or to the new method which is a MRI generated cutting guide called Otismed. All patients have an MRI so both groups will be unaware of which surgical technique is used. All patients receive the usual pre-op care and same type of replacement knee. Follow-up research visits are scheduled at 4 weeks, 3 and 6 months, and 1 and 2 years. Patients will be informed of which surgical technique they were randomized to at the conclusion of the study.

Gel-200 Versus Placebo in Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Osteoarthritis of the Knee

The purpose of this study is to determine if a single intra-articular injection of Gel-200 is superior to a single injection of Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) in subjects with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee.

Comparing Minimal Invasive Surgery en Conventional Total Knee Arthroplasty

OsteoarthritisKnee

Randomized clinical trial comparing minimal invasive operating technique to conventional operating technique for placement of total knee prosthesis. Clinical evaluations, patient questionnaires, X-rays and CT scans were done to compare these two techniques.

Comparison Between Land-based and Water-based Exercises for Knee Osteoarthritis: Randomized Controlled...

Knee Osteoarthritis

Forty six patients with knee osteoarthritis will be randomly allocated into two groups: water-based exercises and land-based exercises. Both of them will receive a strengthening exercise protocol for lower limb muscles. A blind investigator will assess the patients before and immediately after, 3 months and 6 months following the interventions. The main outcomes will be pain, function and strength.

Influences of Balance Training With a Dynamometric Platform in Total Knee Arthroplasty

Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis produces degeneration and joint wear that greatly affects the patient's proprioceptive system increasing instability. After total knee arthroplasty intervention, it is recommended that the patient performs a rehabilitation procedure to minimize deficits caused by surgery. In this job it is essential to insist on the importance of recovering balance after total knee arthroplasty intervention, and assess a specifically designed protocol to restore its function. An intervention which includes a dynamometric platform as a training method was proposed. The randomized clinical trial compared a control group that performed balance exercises on parallel bars, unstable plates, ramps and stairs against an experimental group that included dynamometric platforms training as a differentiator.

Use of Perioperative Photograph as a Motivation for Increasing Range of Motion After Primary Total...

OsteoarthritisKnee

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is recognized as a successful procedure for treating osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. One important factor that make the successful surgery is the degree of knee flexion. Providing more range of motion after TKA impact on the convenience of daily of life such as climbing stairs, sitting on the floor particularly in Asian cultures which require a lot of ground activities. Data are limited on the added benefits of perioperative photograph as motivation for increasing range of motion after TKA. Half of participants received perioperative photograph as motivation, while the other half did not after total knee arthroplasty.

Alterations in Muscle After Total Knee Arthroplasty

Knee Osteoarthritis

The overall goals of this work are: 1) to elucidate alterations in gene expression and downstream protein synthesis 2 weeks after Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) to better explain quadriceps muscle atrophy after TKA and 2) understand the mechanisms responsible for improved maintenance of muscle strength with Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) utilization. Furthermore, this investigation seeks to expand previous findings regarding attenuation of strength and functional performance deficits with NMES application to better understand how altered gene expression influences muscle function.
