Physiotherapy and Therapeutic Education After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

OsteoarthritisKnee

The purpose of this study is to test whether adding a treatment using pain neuroscience education (PNE) and coping skills training (CST) to usual care, in subjects with knee osteoarthritis and pain catastrophizing, who are scheduled for a total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is more effective than only usual care. There is a high evidence level of different systematic reviews, which support the efficacy of physiotherapy treatments combined with behavioural techniques aimed to reduce pain catastrophism, pain and disability in other pathologies. The primary aim of that kind of interventions is to help the subjects to reconceptualise its own pain understanding and its role on the recovery process, as well as promoting an increase of activity and encourage the subject to resume its usual activity instead of continuing to avoid it.

The Relation Between Abdominal Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee Osteoarthritis

Background:Knee osteoarthritis is more common in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus, however it is not known whether this effect is caused by diabetes itself or concominant abdominal obesity. Objectives:The aim of this study is to determine whether type-2 diabetes itself, independent of abdominal obesity, is a risk factor for femoral cartilage, knee osteoarthritis and poor quality of life. Design:A cross-sectional design. Settings:Training and research hospital in Turkey. Patients and Methods:Female patients was enrolled in this study and divided into two groups: according to presence or absence of diabetes. Later, both the patients with and without abdominal obesity was divided into two groups according the presence of diabetes. Main Outcome measures:Clinical parameters were visual analog-scale, gait speed and short form-36. Knee radiographs were evaluated according to Kellgren Lawrance-Scale. And ultrasonography parameters were the measurements of distal femoral cartilage thickness. Sample size:126

Comparison of CoCr Alloy and TiN Coating in TKA

OsteoarthritisKnee3 more

In the current prospective, randomized study, two different materials of the same total knee arthroplasty (TKA) system - cobalt-chromium (CoCr) and titanium-nitride (TiN) - are going to be compared with regards to postoperative outcome. Two-hundred patients are planned to be included in the study over a 4-year period, randomly assigned to either the CoCr- or TiN-implant-group. In order to ensure double-blinding, patients will not be informed about the group they had been assigned to. Moreover, no identifying information of the implant used will be written on documents later accessible to nurses and/or physicians at follow-up appointments. Consequently, surgeons of the respective patients will be excluded from study-specific examination of patients. Despite range of motion (ROM), questionnaires (visual analogue scale - VAS; Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index - WOMAC, Forgotten Joint Score - FJS; Knee Society Scoe - KSS) will be used to assess the postoperative outcome. Furthermore, metal ion levels (cobalt, chrom, molybdenum, titanium) in the blood stream of patients will be measured at scheduled follow-up appointments. It is expected that there will not be a measureable difference between the two coating-groups with regards to ROM, functionality, and metal-ion levels over time.

Risk Factor Involved in Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA)

Knee Osteoarthritis

Clinical study regarding the incidence and severity of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in a certain area from South-Eastern Europe. Aim of the clinical study: to determine the KOA grade through X-Ray studies, to perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis to assess the KOA severity and to determine the level of significant parameters in the synovial liquid extracted from the patients presenting KOA.

A Study of the Safety and Efficacy of Subcutaneously Administered REGN475 in Patients With Osteoarthritis...

Osteoarthritis

This is a double-blind, prospective, randomized study in which patients will be randomized to 1 of 5 treatment arms (4 active and 1 placebo). Each patient will receive one SC injection of REGN475 or placebo and 1 IV infusion of either REGN475 or placebo, on day 1 (baseline) In order to preserve the blind, patients receiving REGN475 SC will also receive placebo IV, and patients receiving REGN475 IV will also receive placebo SC.

Efficacy and Safety Study in Patients Suffering From Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee Osteoarthritis

The primary objective of this study is to compare a combination of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate (V0220) to Hyalgan® on pain relief in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) over 24 weeks when administered in three weekly injections. Chondroitin sulfate is one of the components of cartilage. Studies have shown that chondroitin sulphate improves the quality of the hyaluronic acid produced in the joint. The benefit of V0220 combination is based on two main physicochemical properties, in line with the characteristics of osteoarthritic disease: optimising the rheological behaviour and improving the buffering effect on synovial flow ("outflow buffering").

Intraarticular Platelet-rich Plasma Injections Versus Corticosteroid Injections in Primary Knee...

Osteoarthritis

Aim: To study and compare the clinical effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and intra-articular (IA) corticosteroid injections in patients with primary osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. This study aims to demonstrate this by using the Oxford Knee Score and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) to illustrate quantifiable difference between the two treatment modalities. Patient satisfaction will be compared by utilizing the Short-Form Survey-12 (SF-12) Score. Our null hypothesis states that intra-articular PRP injections is more beneficial in the long-term treatment of primary OA of the knee.
