Intervention Study for Overweight and Obese Kindergarten Children

OverweightObesity1 more

The goal of the this study is to create an interdisciplinary program which includes intervention in the fields of nutrition, physical activity and behavior in order to treat obesity and overweight among kindergarten children and to examine the influence of such program on the BMI,BMI%, physical fitness, knowledge and preferences in the said fields among the participants.

Fruit and Vegetable Juice Concentrate Effects on RBP4 and Antioxidant Capacity in Lean and Overweight...

Obesity

Our study aims to evaluate if the consumption of a Fruit and Vegetable Juice Concentrate (FVJC) vs. placebo can exert changes in the serum levels of Retinol Binding Protein 4 (RBP4), carotenoids, tocopherol, antioxidant capacity, pro-inflammatory markers, insulin sensitivity in conjunction with weight management in a cohort of lean as compared to overweight healthy six to ten year-old boys. The boys will undergo a detailed medical and family history and a complete physical examination during the screening visit. Careful anthropometric measures and body composition by DEXA will be performed. Nutritional and exercise counseling will be given at the start of the study. The outcome measures will include differences in serum RBP4, antioxidant levels, inflammatory markers and insulin sensitivity at baseline and six months after consumption of FVJC in a randomized double blind placebo control manner.

Promoting Water Consumption for Prevention of Overweight in School Children in a Controlled Intervention...

Overweight

A major goal in public health is to find effective, feasible and simple programs for overweight prevention among children. This controlled intervention study evaluates a simple environmental and behavioral modification for its efficacy in preventing overweight of children in the school setting. The intervention strategy focuses solely on the promotion of drinking tap water. The study was conducted in 32 elementary schools including about 3000 children in two German cities over 1 school year.

Support for Increased Physical Activity (Stöd Till Aktivare Motion)

Overweight

The purpose of this study is to improve and analyze the level of physical activity in immigrant women from the Middle East and Latin America living in Sweden. The investigators will also investigate if glucose, insulin, and lipid metabolism; stress-related hormone production; and subclinical inflammatory activity are affected by the intervention. The follow-up period is 2 years.

Evaluating the Effects of a Diet and Exercise Program in People With Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes:...

OverweightObesity2 more

Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, which are mainly caused by a lack of physical activity and excess weight, put people at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This study will compare the effects of a weight loss diet versus a weight loss diet plus an exercise program on body composition and cardiovascular factors that are early predictors of future cardiovascular disease in overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes.

Wheat Germ Supplementation Will Improve Markers of Gut Health, Inflammation, and Insulin Resistance...

OverweightInsulin Resistance1 more

The objective of this pilot study is to determine the effects of wheat germ (WG) supplementation on gut health and subsequent effects on markers of inflammation and insulin resistance in overweight individuals. WG is a by-product of wheat processing and an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and fiber. A few studies have shown the health benefits of WG including gut modulatory potential, but the prebiotic functions of WG in humans remain in question and warrant further investigation.

Work Package 2 Phase 1 - Beverages Study

Glycemic IndexOverweight and Obesity

Within the SWEET project (EU funded), in Work Package 2 there are two phases, this study refers to Phase 1 of the SWEET WP2 project, which will be a coordinated trial across 3 intervention centres, University of Navarra (UNAV), University of Liverpool (ULIV) and University of Copenhagen (UCPH). It will involve an acute intervention in 120 individuals to explore initial acceptance, safety and post-prandial effects of 3 S&SE blends delivered in beverage format. The main endpoints of the SWEET WP2 Phase 1 study will be glycaemic and lipaemic responses; eating behavior (subjective appetite, food preference, cravings, reward), and health effects (rebound hunger, G.I. side effects and metabolic effects). This phase will be exploratory and will not involve any specific primary hypotheses.

Effects of Maple Syrup on Gut Microbiota Diversity and Metabolic Syndrome

OverweightMicrobiota4 more

It has been suggested that the actual obesity epidemy is related to chronic overconsumption of added or free sugars. The increasing popularity of artificial sweeteners attest the population willingness to reduce added sugars intake and to use alternatives to alleviate health impact of free sugar overconsumption. However, recent findings suggest that artificial sweeteners may rather contribute to obesity epidemy and its associated adverse health effects, potentially via a negative impact on gut microbiota. It has been shown in various studies that, for the same amount of sucrose, unrefined sugars (such as maple syrup) are associated with favorable metabolic effects. The polyphenols contained in maple syrup, especially lignans, could contribute to these positive effects. Indeed, the strong impact of those biomolecules on the modulation of gut microbiota and on gastro-intestinal and metabolic health has been demonstrated in several studies. It is therefore highly relevant to test the hypothesis that the substitution of refined sugar by an equivalent amount of maple syrup (5% of daily energy intake) result in a lesser metabolic deterioration, by the modulation of maple syrup on gut microbiota, than the one observed with refined sugar.

Healthy Lifestyle Intervention on Diabetes Risk Reduction Among Bruneian Young Adults

Overweight and ObesityRisk Reduction2 more

The general research question posed was 'How effective is a healthy lifestyle intervention using behavioural change strategies in the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)?'. The main aim was to assess the effectiveness of a healthy lifestyle intervention implemented for 12 weeks via face-to-face group sessions and by using social media tools (Facebook and WhatsApp) for young adults at risk of T2DM. The hypothesis was that this healthy lifestyle intervention may be effective in terms of initiating an increased physical activity (PA) level and a healthy balanced dietary intake resulting in improvements of other T2DM risk factors at 12 weeks.
