Overweight and Obesity

This study aims to test the efficacy and feasibility of an acceptance, mindfulness and compassionate-based intervention for women with overweight and obesity without binge-eating disorder (Kg-Free). Kg-Free intervention comprises 10 weekly group sessions plus 2 booster fortnightly sessions (31/2months) 2h30 hours each, run in small groups at Coimbra's University Hospital. The main goal of Kg-Free intervention is to reduce weight self-stigma and unhealthy eating behaviours and promote quality-of-life by targeting weight-related experiential avoidance and self-criticism patterns. The intervention focuses on fostering a greater awareness and ability to be in contact, tolerate and accept all internal experiences (even the unwanted ones, such as craving for food, fatigue, stigma and shame), rather than trying to avoid, control or change them. Additionally, the intervention intents for participant's to develop a compassionate attitude towards themselves, especially during challenging times in order to decrease shame and self-criticism.

Stanford Clinics Physician Mindset Training

Mindsets play an important role in motivating and shaping health behavior and outcomes. For example, when patients have the mindset that a treatment will work, they are more likely to adhere to treatment medications and the treatment itself becomes more effective as a result of this mindset. Providers have an opportunity to shape important patient mindsets as part of clinical care, and these mindsets may influence patients' adherence to medication, screening and vaccination recommendations, and diet, exercise, and treatment recommendations that can help patients manage chronic illness. To help care teams capitalize on the potential of leveraging mindsets in medicine and improve patient health behavior and outcomes, we developed and implemented the Medicine Plus Mindset Training as part of Primary Care 2.0. Built on more than two decades of research, this training program (a) Informs Primary Care teams about the power of patient mindsets in shaping treatment outcomes (b) Provides care teams with a language and framework to identify which patient mindsets may be at play (i.e. patient mindsets about illness, treatment, their body, and the provider/care team) and (c) Equips care teams with skills and techniques to effectively shape patient mindsets to improve health outcomes. By motivating care teams to recognize patient mindsets that may be hindering health behavior change (such as "this illness is a catastrophe") or medication adherence (such as "this medication is going to cause side effects"), care teams become better equipped to help their patients adopt more useful mindsets (such as "this treatment will work," "this illness is manageable," "my body is capable," and "I am in good hands").

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the satiating effects of different gummies with encapsulated flavour on overweight subjects (BMI ≥25 and <30 kg / m2). Some studies have shown that the contribution of different flavours could reduce food intake. This have made grown the interest of food industry in incorporate these compounds in food and to being able to develop new functional foods into the control of body weight, as well as variables of glucose metabolism and lipid profile, which can contribute to te prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Influence of Walnut Intake on Vascular Function and Metabolism

This study seeks to confirm and extend previous finding that four weeks of daily intake of 40 g of walnuts improve microvascular function, increasing the reactive hyperemia index (RHI), effects which were greatest in individuals with the worst initial RHI and correlating to circulating levels of vasoactive plasma epoxides. The current trial will enroll postmenopausal women who are at risk for cardiovascular disease due to their menopausal status and increased central adiposity. The initial trial focused on non-esterified (i.e. plasma) derived oxylipins, but substantial and unique changes were also observed in the esterified lipoprotein pool. The current study will add the esterified lipoprotein pool, important, as the mechanisms by which walnut intake influences endothelial function are currently undefined, but may include lipoprotein induced modulation of vascular hemostasis. As a secondary objective, primary metabolism and urolithin metabotype will be analyzed as a way to capture the influence of potential differences in habitual diet and metabolism on physiologic response. Therefore, this study will combine measures of cardiovascular physiology, metabolomics, and walnut-derived metabolite analyses to assess the 12 week influence of 40 g of daily walnut intake on the health of overweight and obese postmenopausal women.

Results of this work are highly relevant to public health because they employ neuroimaging methods to understand food decision-making. Findings from this study will inform health decision making and holds great potential for future translation across multiple health behaviors and scalable interventions to impact population health

This study is to assess whether a lifestyle intervention with diet, exercise and counselling in young patients will have a positive influence on their weight and overall well-being. This study will enrol patients between the ages of 7 to 17 years of age, who have congenital heart disease, and have been identified being overweight or obese. A total of 40 individuals will participate in this study. The study duration will last for 1 year.
