Increased body weight leading to the development and the establishment of overweight and obesity, has a growing detrimental effect on overall health status and quality of life. Latest research has been focusing on the direct influence of dietary habits on body weight regulation and its synergistic effect with genetic predisposition. The synergistic effect of genetic makeup and dietary habits constitute a major contributing factor, specifically in its manifestation on parameters of the cardiometabolic profile of individuals with elevated body weight. In this context, the aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of two hypocaloric diets with different macronutrient content (a high-carbohydrate/low-fat and a high-protein one) on the body weight loss of an overweight and/or obese adult, Greek population. Moreover, the study aims to explore gene-diet interactions between obesity and weight loss- related target genes and adherence to the proposed dietary schemes. It will further examine influences of the aforementioned factors on body composition, anthropometric indices, such as waist circumference, biochemical biomarkers related to cardiometabolic control and parameters of lifestyle, such as sleep quality. More specifically, 300 participants will be allocated into two groups, following either the high-carbohydrate/low-fat diet or the high-protein diet, for a duration of 3 months. Volunteers will participate in in-person meetings, at baseline and at three months after the beginning of the intervention. Anthropometric measurements and collection of blood samples will take place in each meeting. Demographic data and data on family and medical history, dietary habits, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, overall health status and physical activity will be collected at baseline. Participants will be provided with nutritional counselling and support both at the beginning and throughout the intervention. Participants will further report their monthly progress by completing online questionnaires (namely concerning their body weight, overall health status, physical activity and sleep quality), via use of an online assessment tool developed by our team. The effect of the intervention will be evaluated using anthropometric indices, body composition markers and biochemical biomarkers of cardiometabolic control, pre- and post- intervention. Gene-diet interactions will be assessed via genotyping of DNA samples and statistical analyses will take place via statistical packages, such as PLINK v.1.9.

The investigators are examining the effects of potato consumption on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in overweight and obese individuals with type two diabetes mellitus (T2D) to provide feasible and effective dietary ways for individuals to enhance their quality of life. The overall objective of this crossover study is to collect data regarding the effects of potato consumption on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health among overweight and obese individuals with T2D. The central hypothesis of this crossover study is that the daily consumption of 100 g white potato for 12 weeks will contribute to improvements in glycemic control, reductions in inflammation, and improvements in blood lipids and vascular function in overweight and obese individuals with T2D compared to a macronutrient-matched refined grain (75 g cooked long-grain white rice) for 12 weeks (with a 2 week washout period between interventions). Specific Aim) The assessment of blood glucose control, vascular function, body composition and overall cardiovascular risk after consumption of potatoes (100g/d for 12 weeks) in individuals with T2D compared to a calorie matched refined grain at the initial baseline visit as well as the 6-, and 12-week study visits (for each 12-week intervention period). This aim will assess changed in blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-β as well as the following: blood pressure (BP) markers of endothelial function [flow-mediated dilation (FMD), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and endothelin-1 (ET-1)] markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein) body composition via bioelectrical impedance (BIA), lean mass and fat mass assessment lipid profiles, consisting of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL). Atherogenic risk ratios (TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, HDL-C/LDL-C) will also be assessed anthropometrics [weight, height, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WC/HC)]

This is the second in a series of pilot interventions we are conducting to assess how principles from behavioral economics can be applied to improve consumers' food choices. In collaboration with Aramark, the food service vendor, we intend to examine if calorie labeling in different formats impacts consumers choice of bottled beverages in hospital cafeterias. Specifically, we will be testing whether signage that conveys to consumers the number of calories in each bottled beverage will increase the number of zero-calorie beverages sold relative to non-zero-calorie beverages. Likewise, we will test whether signage that conveys calories in exercise equivalents increases the sale of zero-calorie beverages. Lastly, we will test if signage conveying standard calorie information in conjunction with exercise equivalents increases the sale of zero-calorie beverages. We will measure the differential effect of each of these three formats for calorie information.

The Effect of a High Protein Diet on Body Weight Change During Post-partum

Nearly 20% of women do not return to their pré-gestacional body weight. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of diet and socio-demographics factors during gestation and postpartum period to body weight change after delivery. This is a clinical trial with 180 women interviewed at 1 (baseline), 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months postpartum. The dietary data were obtained by employing the Food Consumption Frequency Questionnaire with reference to the first and sixth months of postpartum.

Worldwide, low-income and middle-income countries are undergoing rapid demographic and nutritional changes. Populations tend to move from their traditional food habits towards dietary patterns characterized by a more energy-dense diet, while urbanization and technology (work, transport) play a role in the reduction of their physical activity. This shift towards energy-dense diets and lower levels of physical activity are key determinants of chronic diseases. Nowadays, childhood overweight and obesity are becoming a major threat to public health all in low-income and middle-income countries. Clearly, not properly addressing this health problem will only aggravate the already enormous impact of chronic diseases on the social and economic development of these countries. This study aims to develop a culturally relevant school-based prevention intervention among Ecuadorian adolescents (11-13 years old) in Cuenca. The intervention will target behavioural nutrition and physical activity. Intervention strategies will be developed based on theoretical behavioural change models integrated in two complementary frameworks, i.e. (i) the Intervention Mapping protocol, and (ii) the Comprehensive Participatory Planning and Evaluation protocol. The study includes two phases: A formative research, which will be conducted in order to understand the causality of the school environment and unhealthy eating and low physical activity levels in school-going adolescents, aged 12-13 years old. A paired, cluster-randomized controlled trial including 1400 adolescents (12-13 years old) from 10 pairs of schools (i.e. clusters). Within each pair of clusters, one cluster will be randomly assigned to the intervention and the other to the control group.
