Docetaxel in Treating Patients With Refractory or Recurrent Advanced Gynecologic Cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Docetaxel may also stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving daily doses of docetaxel may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of docetaxel in treating patients with refractory or recurrent advanced gynecologic cancer.

Bevacizumab and Radiation Therapy for Sarcomas

The main purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of bevacizumab in combination with radiation therapy to see what effects (good or bad) they have on patients with soft tissue sarcoma. Bevacizumab is an antibody designed specifically to slow or stop the growth of cancerous tumors by decreasing the blood supply to the tumor. Bevacizumab is approved by the FDA in combination with intravenous 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy as a treatment for patients with cancer of the colon or rectum that has spread. However, the use of bevacizumab in combination with radiation for sarcomas is still under investigation.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine and docetaxel, work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining gemcitabine with docetaxel may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining gemcitabine with docetaxel in treating patients who have recurrent osteosarcoma, recurrent Ewing's sarcoma, or unresectable or locally recurrent chondrosarcoma.

RATIONALE: Imatinib mesylate may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for their growth. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well imatinib mesylate works in treating patients with HIV-related Kaposi's sarcoma.

This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of oxaliplatin when given together with irinotecan in treating young patients with refractory solid tumors or lymphomas. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin and irinotecan, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Oxaliplatin may help irinotecan kill more cancer cells by making cancer cells more sensitive to the drug. Giving oxaliplatin together with irinotecan may kill more cancer cells.

This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of a novel tyrosine kinase inhibitor, PTK787/ZK222584, in the treatment of GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor) that is resistant to imatinib mesylate (Gleevec). The study participants are required to have histologically confirmed GIST with prior imatinib treatment for metastatic GIST. is administered orally 1250 mg/day. Six patients will first enter the study. If clinical benefit is obtained in >1 of 6 patients, 9 and 30 additional patients will be entered into the protocol in two stages (a maximum of 45 patients will be entered). Patients who benefit from the study treatment will be treated with PTK787/ZK222584 until treatment failure.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy such as doxorubicin and ifosfamide use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Colony-stimulating factors, such as pegfilgrastim, cause the body to make blood cells. It is not yet known whether doxorubicin alone is more effective with or without ifosfamide and pegfilgrastim in treating soft tissue sarcoma. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying giving doxorubicin alone to see how well it works compared to giving doxorubicin together with ifosfamide and pegfilgrastim in treating patients with locally advanced or metastatic soft tissue sarcoma.

RATIONALE: Vaccines may make the body build an immune response to kill tumor cells. Colony-stimulating factors such as sargramostim increase the number of immune cells found in bone marrow or peripheral blood. Combining vaccine therapy with sargramostim may cause a stronger immune response and kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects of vaccine therapy when given together with sargramostim in treating patients with advanced sarcoma or brain tumor.

RATIONALE: Radioactive drugs, such as samarium Sm 153 lexidronam pentasodium, may carry radiation directly to tumor cells and not harm normal cells. A peripheral stem cell transplant may be able to replace blood-forming cells that were destroyed by chemotherapy and samarium Sm 153 lexidronam pentasodium. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Giving samarium Sm 153 lexidronam pentasodium together with a peripheral stem cell transplant and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving samarium Sm 153 lexidronam pentasodium together with autologous stem cell transplant and radiation therapy works in treating patients with recurrent or refractory, metastatic, or unresectable osteosarcoma.
