Investigation of an Updated Bone-anchored Sound Processor

Hearing LossHearing Loss10 more

The study is a prospective, single-center, comparative, cross-over study with within-subject control design. In the investigation an updated sound processor will be tested at compared to the CE marked Ponto 3 SuperPower sound processor (available on the market since December 2016) in order to establish marketing claim(s) on the updated sound processor. The performance of the two sound processors will be evaluated via speech and hearing tests, and patient reported outcomes.

walk2Wellness: Long-term Effects of Walkasins® Wearable Sensory Prosthesis

Sensory Peripheral NeuropathyBalance; Distorted1 more

The purpose of this study is to investigate the long-term effects of Walkasins® use on clinical and subject-reported outcomes of balance and gait function, quality of life, physical activity/participation, pain, and medication use in persons with peripheral neuropathy who experience balance problems.

Sensory Effects of Rapidly-Changing Magnetic Fields

Sensory Disorders

This study is being conducted to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans by reducing the time required for imaging. Experience has shown that unpleasant side-effects from magnetic pulses used in MRI (for example, tingling or tapping sensations) can be reduced when the magnetic pulses are shortened. In this study, we will explore whether this effect holds true when very short magnetic pulses are applied.

Intrathecal Morphine Microdose Method Sensory Changes

Analgesic Drug DependenceSensory Disorders1 more

Following the retrospective study on the effectiveness of the microdose method of intrathecal morphine therapy, the investigators are interested in measuring the sensory changes at 4 time points during the microdose method. The microdose method involves weaning the patient off oral opioids and maintaining an opioid-free period prior to initiating a very low opioid dose in intrathecal therapy. The microdose method is a standard of care. The study involves measuring sensory changes to hot, cold, and pressure. Data collection will be performed at regularly scheduled clinic visits, examining range of doses, pain scores, dose escalations, quantifiable psychosocial factors ( not captured in previous retrospective study), and changes in sensory thresholds.

Investigation of Motor and Sensory Development

Infant DevelopmentSensory Disorder9 more

In the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), infants encounter many sensory stimuli (excessive noise, bright lights, painful medical applications, etc.) that are not present in the uterus. During the critical period of brain development, this sensory overload affects the physiological responses of infants; It can lead to sensory processing problems by causing negative changes in motor, neurological and sensory development. Sensory processing was explained by Dunn as the emergence of appropriate reactions and behaviors in neurological processes in which visual, auditory, tactile, oral, olfactory, vestibular, proprioceptive and kinesthetic inputs are regulated.

Clinical Trials Stage of 'SoleSensor': A Balance-Enhancing Shoe Insert.

Sensation Disorder

Our research has shown that pressure sensation from the soles of the feet (plantar mechanoreceptors) plays an important role in controlling several key aspects of balancing reactions, particularly during compensatory stepping . As a result, age-related loss of plantar pressure sensation, which is very common, can lead to impaired control of these reactions. However, we have shown that it is possible to compensate for balance impairments resulting from this loss of sensation by using special footwear insoles to facilitate sensation from the perimeter of the sole. To date, we have demonstrated the feasibility of this approach in laboratory studies, and we have obtained a U.S. patent for the design concept. However, it remains to be determined whether the benefits of the footwear persist over the long term, or whether there is a habituation of the effect. Also, we need to determine whether there are any practical problems associated with wearing such footwear, e.g. due to discomfort or irritation of the skin.

Accuracy of the Sensory Test Using the Laryngopharyngeal Endoscopic Esthesiometer in Obstructive...

Sleep ApneaObstructive2 more

This is a prospective double blinded randomized crossover controlled trial aiming at validating the measurement of laryngopharyngeal mechanosensitivity in patients with suspected OSA using a recently developed laryngopharyngeal endoscopic esthesiometer and rangefinder (LPEER). Subjects will be recruited from patients with suspected OSA referred for baseline polysomnography to a university hospital sleep laboratory. Intra- and inter-rater reliability will be evaluated using the Bland-Altman's limits of agreement plot, the intraclass correlation coefficient, and the Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient, depending on the distribution of the variables. Diagnostic accuracy will be evaluate plotting Receiver-operating-characteristic-curves (ROC-curves) using as reference standard basal polysomnogram. The sensory threshold values for patients with mild, moderate, and severe OSA, will be determined and compared using ANOVA or Kruskal Wallis test, depending on the distribution of the variables.

Sensory and Motor Proficiency For Children With Spina Bifida

Spina BifidaSensory Disorder2 more

Spina bifida is one of the neural tube defects that cause neuromuscular dysfunction. Spina bifida is a disease accompanied by motor paralysis, musculoskeletal problems, Arnold-Chiari malformation, osteoporosis, hydrocephalus, upper limb coordination disorder. The affected upper extremity functionality and hand skills are very important for independence in daily living activities. There are some studies in the literature showing that upper extremity motor function is affected in patients with spina bifida. However, no study was found in which the upper extremity was investigated in terms of sensory and motor proficiency. The social and professional aspects of the upper extremity are of great importance. Therefore, our study aims to investigate the effects of upper extremity sensory and motor proficiency in patients with spina bifida
